Troubleshooting 101 – Basic Troubleshooting Steps

Bunny here. Putting on my glasses, getting out my pocket protector, and getting my magic fingers and thumbs ready to type those zeroes and ones. Basically…it’s Nerdy Time!!

For whatever various reasons, our game likes to frak with our minds and heads and nothing seems to quite go right. We panic. Throw our device. Scream. Yell. There may be many tears as well.  Just slowly take your thumbs/fingers off the device or you may crack the screen. Lol.  It’s ok. I am here to help. All of us are. Promise.

So here we are again. Got your 1’s and 0’s fingers ready? It is time to get technical.

The following are some general steps you can take when pretty much ANYTHING goes amiss in your game. One or the other usually helps. So give them all a try and see if it corrects the issue for you.

1: The “Trigger”- Go in and out of neighbors towns forcing the game to “sync”. Then go to YOUR Krustyland and into the menus. Then back to YOUR Springfield and the menus. This will usually “trigger” the game into syncing up all those missing issues and putting the game back to the way it needs to be.

2: Basic Restart- Log out of the game, restart your device, once powered back up, log back in. Check to see if issue resolved.

3: Start New -(This is the one EA usually tells you to do.) Uninstall the app from your device. Clear out all the cache and cookies to make sure nothing remains of the game. Then restart your device. Once back up, reinstall the app again. Log into your account. Check to see if issue is resolved.

4: Trigger Using Alternate Device- Sometimes if your device won’t fix the issue or even let you in your game, using another one will. (I have an iPod, Droid Tablet, and my Droid cell phone that all have the game installed. If you don’t have an alternate one, see if you can borrow a friends.) Make sure you are logged out of your game on your main device, otherwise you will get the message about being on another device. If you are unable to log out, no worries, just continue and play now.
Now for the steps…
*Log into your game as you normally would on the alternate device.
*Collect $$ and XP on all your buildings that are ready and from the thumbs up on completed characters tasks in your town.
*Travel to your Friends Town Main Screen.
*Go into the “Other Town“.
*Collect the daily 3 $$ and XP from the “Other Town“.
*Exit out of the “Other Town” back to the Friends Town Main Screen.
*From there, select “Log Out”.
Now go back to your Original/Main device you were using. Restart your main device. Once powered back up, log back into your game. See if issue resolved itself.

(There is a KABOOM/Nuclear method, however this is to the point of backing everything up, wiping your device, going back to factory settings…it is really not recommended for basic issues. So hold off before going to that extent.)

Beyond that, depending on issue, the next step I suggest is to contact EA. This is for two main reasons. First, they are alerted to the ongoing issue and the more complaints made the more attention is brought to it and hopefully the sooner it is resolved. Second, if it is effecting YOU greatly…they offer great gifts in return…like donuts for compensation. (This may or may not happen, but at least it’s worth the try, right?)

Now there are a few methods in contacting EA. You can open a ticket by submitting the details of your issue, email, live chat, or…even call them. The steps were in my prior post HERE.

As always, we are here to help in anyway we can. (I even try to harass…errr…I mean contact EA on our readers behalf to see if there is anything more I can find out too.) Just keep hanging in there. Glitches happen. This is still the coolest “Freemium” game to date. 😉

Now to go hide by my locker and wait while that cute guy with the crooked smile walks by. Maybe he will notice me this time. 😛

  2. My Institute of Technology in Springfield Height does not allow me to make electronics. It says 0 of 0 and then has each character listed and says “storage full! Unlock more storage or spend your resources” any ideas? I’ve tried contacting EA and they haven’t helped at all. Tried all your methods here.


    • So you’ve tried storing and replacing the building? Uninstalling, restarting your device and reinstalling?

      Those are my only tips unfortunately. If those don’t work it’s an issue EA has to fix…

      • Yes, I’ve tried all those things more than once. also contacting EA has proved useless. Thanks for your suggestions though

  3. Hi I wonder if you can help. I’ve had to take my tablet back to factory reset and of cause lost tapped out. I’ve tried to get it back but it’s took me back to the beginning and not where I was. I didn’t use the ea side of it I think it was Facebook. Any ideas how I can get it back.? Cheers Dean

  4. I think I’m getting desperate, lol… frustrated for sure! Just got a brand new TrekStor SurfTab Xiron 7.0 and downloaded my fave game only to get the message, “Cannot connect to the internet. This one’s your fault, not ours. C Check your settings and retry.” Any suggestions?

    • Sounds like something is off with your internet connection to the tablet. Unfortunately i don’t know much about that particular brand to help…but when i’ve gotten that error it’s usually because my connection isn’t hitting the device properly

  5. Surprise surprise!!!!!!!opened tapped out today and everything is gone. I am so upset. No warning whatsoever that I needed to have a sign in

    • There’s a task when you start playing TSTO that says to create an Origin ID (aka EA ID). It gives you donuts for it…did you ignore the task?

    • Creating an account was part of the Tutorial in start of game. Sorry if you skipped that option when Homer n Lisa took you to it. Or each time you launched the game.

      It’s like putting your money in a mattress instead of bank account… something happens and no way to track that money.

      Or not saving pictures/data from phone to an SD card or elsewhwere. If the phone is damaged, how do you recover them or any other data lost on it for that matter?

      Not much you can do if you didn’t save it and played anonymous and have no back up file. Did you ever back up your phone recently? Wish we had better suggestions and help, but that’s the truth… as much as it may sting… cold hard truth.

  6. i’ve got a new problem since the update after the monorail event. i had no problems with the removal of the event, however today i can’t access the game. somehow i was signed out and not it requires a new sign in with an EA account rather than an origin account. <<<< i notice this change with the upgrade, but figured it was just an "eyepatch" fix (for aesthetics etc). anywho, i tried to use my PW for my origin account, but it's not accepting it. do i need to make a new account for EA??? (ihatemakingnewaccts)

    • nvm. i had to visit the EA site to get logged in. what a waste of time. XP. thanks for all the help you give us nerdz. <3

  7. Well, so far I have uninstalled and reinstalled TSTO twice in the last week. And I still get a freeze and have to close and reopen about 10 times a day for the last week or so. I think I’ve eliminated all of the extra moving characters, turkey, rabbit, anything that moves and does not generate money. And I still get a freeze/lock-up and have to close and reopen. Is anyone else having this, it it because I am past the number of allowed buildings, I’m lost don’t know what yo try next and I’m getting very frustrated to the point that I am not enjoying this hardly… Any wisdom to help a tapper out?

  9. help, I have been looking for hours for the answer to my question, I saw it posted before. I just spent my money on donuts, the pop up that says. Are you sure you want to spend ####donuts. Has disappeared! I purchased 300+. Donuts. And now in down to 200! Guess I’m having a senior moment! I am a senior citizen, so go figure! LOL. THANKS

  10. I just purchased Otto and school bus and then they were gone from my town. I tried the troubleshooting you suggested, no luck. I contacted EA, they looked into my town and said it should be back in my inventory within 24 hrs. Does this sound right or were they just trying to get rid if me?

  11. Hi there! I have a recurring issue with new events and submitting tickets has yielded no response in the past. With your insight into the game you’re my last hope!

    I will use the most current (pieman) event as an example, however I have this problem with every event on TSTO.

    When I go to my neighborhood and view my friends towns, I don’t have the option to collect any carbon rods, all I see is the typical “3 actions left” option. Their towns look the same as always and don’t have the inky illustration style that the towns should have with this update.

    This is something that happens, and seems to resolve itself whenever another patch is provided from EA, however if that doesn’t happen in two weeks or so then I can kiss achieving all of the prizes goodbye. I still recieve notifications that so-and-so has reported a crime in my town, but there’s no indication of that person visiting my town and I can not return the favor in their town.

    It’s a super bummer because no one else seems to have this problem when I search online for it, and I don’t know how to better articulate the issue I’m having. I could just tough it out and deal with the fact that I’ll never get to complete an event fully (I always run out of time before the event closes without achieving those final prize items) but this time enough is enough.

    If you could please give me some direction beyond your recommendations above or a more effective way of contacting EA I would be eternally grateful.


    • The main thing you need to first look at with ANY event is the questline. Majority of events do not even FULLY launch into play until 3 to 5 parts into the quest. This one is the same. There is also the factor that the quest directs you to do certain things and until you do them, that option is not there (like in this one, it tells you to go report some crimes and get criminals to start it AFTER you are a few parts into the dialog.)

      Then there is your neighbors. If THEY are not updating… you can’t have the same options of tapping until they do.

      So there is a mix of things going on. Make sure first YOU are where you need to be in the dialog and unlocked all that is available. Second, if your neighbors seem to not show the update, try a different one. Or even get new active ones.

      Outside that, there is really nothing else I can suggest outside contacting them and initiating a phone call (preferably from the Texas Facility, ask when they call).
