Mad Men of Springfield: Tom O’Flanagan

Welcome to another new addition to Addicts, the Mad Men of Springfield. We will be going into depth on the history and background of the male species running around our lil towns as well as those not yet in the game.

Just think about it. What Man living in Springfield is “normal”?  Not a single one that I can think of. They all have at least ONE thing wrong with them. Seriously! Think about it. How many issues does Moe have? A Reverend a “little” obsessed with trains? An owner of a Kwik-E-Mart that goes to counseling with the same person that robs him, on a daily basis? Not to mention the “inbreeding” and other strange happenings going on at the farm. Oh the idiosyncrasies.

So sit back, relax, grab your favorite beverage, and enjoy as we kram your brains with some Simpson knowledge of the MAD MEN OF SPRINGFIELD.

Homercouchmadmen

“We drink all day, we’re full of guilt
We know we’re not Scots , cause we don’t wear a kilt
We toss our darts with a beer in our hand
We boil our food till it tastes really bland
This is the lifffeeeee in Irelannnddd
Ireland!”

This week we’re taking a look at one of Tapped Out Springfield’s old school style men.  A real Irish hardchaw…and of course the only true Irishman in our games.  This week we’re talking about Tom O’Flanagan.

Tom enters the world of TSTO via the Saint Patrick’s Day update(s).  Originally appearing first in 2013 and being offered again during the 2014 event!  Tom enters the world of The Simpsons via Season 20 E 14 In the Name of Grandfather.

Tom 23

We first see a glimpse of Tom during Grampa’s Simpson’s flashback to his army days in Ireland, and the fond memories he has of O’Flanagan’s Pub. Our first view of Tom as a young bar owner filled with hope, passion & dreams.  Serving up drinks and good times at his Dunkilderry Pub.

Tom 1

Flash forward 60+ years to 2010 and we see the present day Tom O’Flanagan as a crazy old man  obsessed with his horse racing tapes.  Watching the same races over and over again, expecting different results.  The very definition of crazy…

Tom 4 Tom 5              Tom 8

You see O’Flanagan’s is now empty.  It’s no longer the happening place where Tom the dreamer could be found.  No, now all of the local Dunkilderry residents all got jobs and spend their days in their fancy offices instead of at the local Pub.  And that old Tom the dreamer has been replaced by Tom the crazy old man!  That is until Abe and Homer walk into his bar!  First they warm his heart by telling him they want to drink…

Tom 11

Tom show’s his rustiness (or perhaps that he is a bit off his rocker) at first and offers them up a nice Australian Shiraz.

Tom 13

Who goes to Ireland for Shiraz?!  SHOW ME THE GUINNESS!

Tom 18

So Tom whips up an Irish drink, almost, of Bushmills served in a potato served in a pint of that Irish Chocolate Milk..Guinness..

Tom 15

A true “Irish Drink”, that is until Grampa calls him out on it because it’s not a real “Irish Drink”.  Apparently, it’s not a true “Irish Drink” until it’s spit in by an Irishmen.

Tom 17

Flash forward to a long night of drinking for Grampa and Homer and we can see Tom scheming already.  He’s got that crazy look in his eye while serving up another round to Abe and Homer!  Tom’s planning something…a true mad man is always scheming something….

Tom 21

The next morning all is revealed when Tom walks into the bar to find a passed out Homer and Abe and declares them “Dunkilderry’s newest Tavern Keepers.”  You see apparently Homer and Abe were so drunk the night before, and enjoyed themselves so much old Tom got them to buy the empty pub.  That night in their drunken state, apparently the real estate laws in Ireland are a bit more lax then they are in the US.  In that being drunk is a GOOD thing….

Tom 25 Tom 29

So that’s it, the last we see of crazy ol’ Tom.  Our last image of him is his evil laugh as he walks out the door and away from O’Flanagan’s Pub forever.

Tom 31

We do run into, sort of, Tom in the future.  During Season 23, E9 Holidays of Future Passed when future Lisa receives a Friend Request from Tom.  The future has not been so kind to Tom, from what we can tell.  He’s even wearing an eye patch now…

Tom 33

Tom O’Flanagan originally arrived in TSTO in 2013 as part of the 2013 St. Patrick’s Day Event and he has been re-released for the 2014 event.  He arrives in Springfield via his Pub, which makes sense that it’s now in Springfield since Homer & Abe purchased it.  Let’s take a look at Tom’s Tasks in TSTO:

Task Time Reward
Watch Old Horse Race Tapes 1hr $70, 17xp
Serve Drinks 4hrs $175, 45xp
Clean Beer Mugs 8hrs $275, 75xp
Do an Irish Jig 12hrs $420, 100xp
Visit the Track 24hrs $600, 150xp

So that’s it.  The full story on Tom O’Flanagan.  Just a tired old man reliving his youth one old horse race at a time or a crazy mad man trapped in the past?  You tell me!

What do YOU think of Tom O’Flanagan?  Did you unlock him last year or is this your first TSTO St. Patrick’s Day?  Do you think Tom was planning on unloading the bar to Homer and Abe the whole time?  Or just a snap decision once he realized how drunk they were?  Sound off in the comments below, you know we LOVE hearing from you!

  1. Now I accepted Mrs Sideshow may have moved to Springfield with Bob, But Tom O’F has never been resident or even seen in Springfield.

    Good piece by the way.

    • lol I completely agree! It’s more the “Mad Men” of our TSTO Springfields….

And thank you! It’s fun writing these little in-depth character analysis pieces 🙂

      • Well I guess you don’t have to be mad to live in Springfield but….

Just don’t start writing about those family guy dweebs and pretending they are Springfielders.

      • Mmmmm that’s what my ex said…..

  2. I’m second generation Irish and proud of it! So heck yeah I scooped up all the premium and regular St Pattys Day stuff! Gimmie a pint of that delicious Irish chocolate milk (hold the spit 0_0) and SLAINTE!!!

  3. freak, it all sounded good when you started out with the kilt, but kinda went south after that, LOL (besides true kilt-wearers would never wear anything under them) 😉

Oh, and I think Tom had given up, but seized the opportunity 🙂

    • Just funnin there granmamadar…never could figure out them fishnet stockings so they went into my tacklebox… 😉

      • LOL, any luck with the fishing now? Funny you mentioned that, although they would never admit it publicly, I’ve known men who wore pantyhose under their thermals when out on the boat, claiming it kept them warmer. Now I question that theory 🙂

  4. Woohoo, my name alone implies that I qualify as a Mad Man of my Springfield…lol…though I’m a Scot, I’ll have some Bailey’$ Irish Creme, minus the spit!!! Some of you already know there’s usually some tighty whiteys under mah kilt…usually…been spied on whilst I was bent over in mah garden…

    Love ole Tom’s jig!!!

    • OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH…a kilt you say? I HAVE to have pics of THAT! RIGHT NOW!! STAT!!

      I love me some Bailey’s. MMMmmmmmmm. 😉

      • Oh I’m truly sorry…was but a joke…though the best part of being a lumberjack is the wearing of women’s clothing…feels sexy…ESPECIALLY a thong..!!!
        Lol…and some more LOL!!!

        • BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooooooooo!!! Sheesh. Big tease! 🙁

“He cuts down trees, he skips and jumps,
He likes to press wild flowers.
          He puts on women’s clothing
          And hangs around…. In bars???????”

      • High heels are a bit tricky though…don’t want to come off as a tramp…so, yeah…there’s a time and place for clear heels…not sure if Springfield is ready forit yet…lol

Is there a “Monty Python” day???

    • Those stilettos must help when you climb those trees….
