Terwilliger’s Guide to Leveling Up Monsarno Research: Act Two

Hey Howdy Hey Tappers!

Cecil Terwilliger has returned to Springfield to make amends…not almonds, despite what Homer thinks.  And in an effort to save himself from being ridden out of Springfield on the back of a horse he’s convinced the town to let him build a Monsarno Research Campus right in Springfield!  This way the residents of Springfield can benefit from all the advantages of GMO veggies!

So, now that you have the back story let’s talk about Monsarno Research.  Monsarno is basically the key to the entire event.  Once you build it you’ll unlock the event in Springfield, including the ability to craft items.  To craft items you’ll need Corn and Fertilizer.  One way you’ll get more Corn and Fertilizer is by sending characters on various tasks for these items.  And the way to unlock these character tasks?  Leveling up your Monsarno Research Center! Whew!  I feel like that took a really long time to get to that point…

Now that Act 2 has arrived it’s opened up a TON of Leveling up options for Monsarno…an infinite number in fact!  So we gave you a quick breakdown of what each level does in the Act 2 Rundown Post. But I know you guys are all about the bass details…so it’s time to get more specific (before the angry mob shows up at my door for not posting this any sooner!).  So let’s take a closer look at what it takes and what happens when you Level Up Monsarno during Act 2…

ico_terwilligers_monsarnoupgrade_md

Before I get into the Act 2 Level Up Details…let’s quickly recap the Leveling up basics for those that have may have forgotten…

How Do I Upgrade?

Well it’s pretty simple really.  You have two ways to upgrade your Monsarno Research Center.  You can either tap on the event menu (remember you access that via the Knife Trophy on the bottom right of your screen…icon looks like this: ico_terwilligers_trophy).  And the last item listed is the Monsarno Upgrade screen:
monsarnoSee the Research Center Icon?  That’s the one you’ll want to be on.

You can also upgrade by tapping on Monsarno Research and hit the upgrade button.  This will take you right to the Event Guide and the Upgrade screen.

monsarnoupgrade

What’s Needed to Upgrade?

Fertilizer and Corn.  The same stuff needed for Crafting.  Different amounts are needed to upgrade to a new level. (we’ll get to that in a minute)

And now…let’s look at the new stuff….

What Happens When I Upgrade?

Well, at each upgrade point you’ll unlock more stuff.  This stuff could be tasks to earn items, new craftable items or higher payouts on existing tasks.  Here’s a look at what you’ll earn at each Level:

Remember for a list of who’s in which group check out Bunny’s post on Cecil’s Daily tasks.

What Happens When I’ve Reached the Max Level?

There is no Max Level in this one…so be careful and don’t burn all your resources on upgrading to get to the Max, cause you won’t reach it.

If There’s No Max Level, When Should I Stop?

That’s really up to you.  You’ve got to decide which tasks/payout upgrades you want & what’s worth it to you.  However, I do recommend NOT upgrading past Level 19.  As you can see the increase from 19 to 20 and 20 to 21 are pretty small, and IMO not worth the resources to upgrade there.

So Fertilizer and Corn Are Required for BOTH Crafting and Upgrading, Which Should We Focus On?

I’ve been saying it since Act 1…Upgrade, Upgrade, Upgrade!  The more tasks/characters you have earning for you the better off you’ll be.

However, there was one exception to this…and it involved the Farmer’s Market.  My advice was, if you were close to getting the Farmer’s Market (like a couple thousand away), I would continue working towards crafting that to get it out of your way and then you can focus on the new items.  BUT that was just my opinion and what I would do.  At the end of the day, you’ve got to do what you think is best for you.

What About the New Monsarno Buildings, How Do I Craft Those/What’s Up With Them?

As noted above Levels 12 and 14 will unlock new Monsarno Buildings.

At Level 12 you’ll unlock the Monsarno Library:

monsarnolibrary

You’ll be given one for free once you reach Level 12…

And you can craft additional ones via the crafting Menu.  Here’s what’s required to craft more Libraries…

At Level 14 you’ll unlock Monsarno Human Resources

You’ll also be given one for free once you reach Level 14…

And you can craft additional ones via the crafting Menu.  Here’s what’s required to craft more HR Buildings…

So if you like them and want more than 1 you can continue to craft after you’ve gotten your free ones.

And that my friends concludes the info on the Monsarno Research Upgrades for Act Two!

What are your thoughts on upgrading? Have you upgraded yet?  Thoughts on the character tasks associated with earning more fertilizer, DNA and corn?  What are your thoughts on the event overall so far?  Sound off in the comments below, you know we love hearing from you!

  1. and i thought cecil’s farm gets corn :3

  2. I keep seeing everyone saying that with monsarno at 19,and squirter at 15 they’ll be able to craft everything..how? I have monsarno at 19,squirter at 15, and opera house at 7. I’ve managed to craft the farmers market and gas and grub but I don’thave much left for anything else

    • Depends on how many characters you have and how often you’re in your game. I’m at Monsarno Level 15, Squirter Level 11 and Opera House Level 9 and I’ve gotten nearly everything. But I’ve been playing for over 2 years and have a ton of premium characters as well as limited-time characters. (Like Kodos, Kang, Fr. Sean, Sharry Bobbins etc).

  3. I’ve managed to upgrade Monsarno research to level 19 but because of such haven’t been able to get the Farmers Market, the Gas and Grub, and the Sani-John Smokehouse. Kind of annoying! Gave up on the herbicide squirter as it seems like a waste of resources and kind of want to finally be able to craft stuff. Then they introduce the opera house and I’m like “whhhhy?!” as I still want to try to craft the stuff I haven’t.
I’m also level 51 with tons of unlocked characters.
Never has an event seemed so frickin impossible as this Monsarno one! Ugh. I always unlock everything and get it all done, but not this time!

  4. Mydessia Barnett

Hi fellow Tati addicts I have a problem with my game and I dunno how to fix it maybe one of you can help…
Act 3 has already started but I am stalled out at act 2 the pushback pt.3 it is telling me to build krabapples apartments in my task bar but they are locked I wasn’t level 22 yet when the task popped up but I am now 23 and they are still locked. This has of course kept me from getting the opera house that is essential to act 3. What do I do?

    • Mydessia Barnett

Was supposed to say tsto addicts.

    • You’ve got to progress through the questlines, your game play level has to match your xp level. So you have to unlock the characters that come before Mrs. K in order to get Mrs. K

  5. Hey guys I need some help! I am at Monsarno Level 14 & Herbicide Squirter 11. I have nearly 7000 fertilizer & enough corn to get the Farmer’s Market, which I really want! I am just not sure it’s worth upgrading at this stage when I know fertilizer will be harder to get hold of in Act 3, but obviously fertiliser payout will be better if I get up to Monsarno Level 17. I’m at Level 38 of the game & have quite a few characters and play a lot, but it’s still taking me ages to craft the Farmer’s Market. I don’t know what to do from here!

    • Don’t bother with anything above 16 since you will only be getting a small increase to your crafting income, though if you want more fertilizer you might want to get level 17 since it ups the fertilizer income you get by a decent amount

  6. I am new to this game and just now reached level 14 in the game so I have very few characters to use for Monsarno jobs….I have the task to build the farmers market but it is taking me forever to get resources….I leveled Monsarno up to level 7 and feel like I just wasted all those resources since I don’t really have enough characters for it to pay off. So my question is should I keep upgrading it and using my resources for the farmers market or just keep saving to craft it? Also if I choose to save them and Act 2 is over can I still get the free buildings if I upgrade Monsarno in the next act or is it only available during the time that act is running……I am so confused with this game being new to it and stepping into this event. I can use all the help that I can get since I only have 2 friends playing it I can’t seem to get extra resources anywhere…..it’s so frustrating!!!

    • You have to at least go to 8 for the questline. Also I’d keep going until you unlock some DNA tasks because right now you have none.

Not going to lie at level 14 you’re not going to get everything. It’s just too new into the game. But you can still win The prizes and craft a couple of things.

    • One thing I would do immediately is go get 98 more “friends.” Keep in mind that, for this game, “friends” can be complete strangers and, when you friend them, they won’t know anything “personal” about your other than your Origin ID. You can find friends to add by going to the “Add Me” thread on this site and/or on other TSTO fan sites. This site actually has two different “Add Me” threads – one general one and one specifically for people who don’t want to be graffitied.

Having lots of friends helps you earn a lot more $$ and XP, as well as FP to earn friendship prizes. And once you max out on FP, you get the chance to earn donuts from visiting your neighbors!

There’s no downside to having lots of neighbors (other than the time it takes to visit them) and, besides all of the benefits Iimentioned above, it also gives you the opportunity to see all of the interesting (and sometimes amazing) things that different people have done with their towns, which can be a great source of inspiration and ideas.

  7. I’ve upgraded Monsarno Research to lvl 26 (yes, way too far) and I’m now getting 7 for the Kooks for Fertilizer task and 6 for the Celebrities for DNA task. So it does increase, but probably not worth it.

  8. I’m confused about upgrading from level 20 to level 21. Specifically, is there an increase in DNA awarded?

The payout breakdown chart above shows the same DNA payout for levels 20 & 21 (5, 7 & 11 DNA for the 3, 6 & 12 hr. tasks) but Cost to Upgrade Chart shows – Increases DNA, Fertilizer & Corn Payout from Jobs – as the reward. Also, the prompt in the game for upgrading to Level 21 states that there is an increase in DNA rewards from jobs.

    Does Level 21 pay more than 5, 7 & 11 DNA?

  9. Do you any idea why the 2 hour Seniors for fertilizer task (“Don’t care about the future”) is no longer in yellow or bumped to the top of their task list? It’s a little annoying to have to check further down the list for additional event related tasks. Is anyone else having this issue as well?

  10. OK, I’m aware that with Monsarno at level 19 and the squirter at level 15, I’ll easily be able to craft everything before the end of the event (and before Act 3 begins, in case items disappear then even thought it says like it did in Act 1 that new prizes will be ADDED for Act 3).
    So my question is this:
While I can get this done, it makes me absolutely bonkers that my DNA payout at Monsarno level 19 is less than 1/hr on the longest task (12 hours, 10 DNA strands). For the sheer sake of anal-retentiveness, do you know what level I’d need to upgrade to so that I at least break even at one per hour? Thanks so much! And if you aren’t upgrading past 19 to check on this anyway, don’t bother on account of me!
    Thanks as always!!
Alissa, jelly beans headed your way this week! Bunny, Wookiee, last chance to pick a treat! 😉

    • Lol. You don’t have to send me anything. Thank you.

Tell you what… YOU pick me out something. I like surprises. 😉

    • I was wondering the same thing about the DNA. I think the real key is to upgrade the sprayer to level 15. At the sprayer level 15 you will receive 25 craft items (fertilizer, corn, or DNA). So it’s not worth upgrading Monsarno past level 19 if you want an increased DNA payout. Just hope to get DNA when you tap a critter. Does that make sense?

      • I think if you are going to upgrade Monsarno to level 19 for the DNA payout, you might as well upgrade it to level 20 as the increase in payouts for DNA is almost identical to the level 19 upgrade (the high roller increase is one less, everything else is the same).

Now that I have my farmer’s market and am getting a pretty high fertilizer return per day, I am not finding fertilizer in short supply. I’m personally finding that DNA is by far the hardest of the 3 to earn, so anything that helps my DNA farming (especially when it doesn’t cost DNA) is worth it.

      • L M-
Absolutely!! I got the squirter to 15 a couple of days ago, and basically it works out so we don’t really even need to be sending all characters on Monsarno tasks constantly anymore, which is awesome. I’m charting my progress daily (yes, I’m THAT girl, apparently, lol) and coming along just fine. I’m holding off on crafting anything until I have the full totals for everything, and I’ll have plenty of time, but the low DNA task payouts irk me. If I decide to keep upgrading for the heck of it (will depend on when we find out what currency will be for Act 3) , I’ll post and let you know. 🙂
Also, gods of EA, stop dropping corn from my Sideshow Cobs! I’ve got corn coming out of my ears!! 😉

    • Drew,
I think we’re on the same page with that one. Doing well with fertilizer, getting tons of corn (that’s almost all I get back when friends tap jelly blobs I leave for them… go figure), but lagging behind in DNA. I’m not too worried- I’ve done the math and seem to be more than OK on progress, but still, it would be nice to have a cushion, especially if we end up needing it in Act 3. 🙂

      • Haha, yeah, I seem to be getting corn a lot now too even though I realty don’t need it. Dropped a couple jelly blobs just now and just got only corn back…

The Gas and Grub is really the only other prize I really want this Act (the Bob sign is ok, but I won’t be heartbroken without it), and yeah, I agree, the math should work out to get it before the end of Act 2…

    • Psssssh… so this one person SAID they would send treats… so I get all excited and wait… and wait … and wait… and wait… and wait…

But alas… no treats in the mail. Le Sigh 🙁 ***pouts in the corner***

  11. Ok, so I’ve leveled up to 17 for the base and level 8 on the squirter. I think the cloud radius is pointless but the multiplers are obviously good. I’ve read the posts below and it looks like I should go all the way up to 19 for the resource center and 15? For the squirter? I got the marketplace in act one and i’m a daily player who has everything but plays for free as much as possible. I want at least one of every craftable item. I will be ok? Act three will still allow for maunuer, corn and dna?

Also, is anyone having problems with “work the land” and “conclude it’s all pointless” tasks no longer being yellow and bumped as priorities in the tasks window? I hate having to cycle through my characters and having to find the ones i’ve missed. Thanks all.

    • I just got the same issue with the work the land task this evening, so you aren’t alone. I’ve been reading some of the other posts on here and it seems to be a common issue, but not one that affects everyone. I too agree that it’s annoying, hope they release a fix soon.

  12. CapCityGoofball

Even though I want to follow your advice, I don’t think I can stop at Level 19. It will just drive me crazy to stop on a level with no divisibles! 🙂

  13. Sandra Shill

So, here’s a question… If you have characters doing event tasks and you upgrade Monsarno to a level that increases a currency payout, will the characters get that higher payout once they finish their current tasks or do they have to start the task post-upgrade to get it?

    • It varies each event. All I can say is try. 😉

    • Sandra- I’m on the fence about upgrading past 19. I’m doing just fine with the current payouts, but I kind of want to her to the point where my DNA payout is at least 12 for the 12 hr task. (10 for 12 hours is really bugging me.) Anyway, after I read your question, I was mad at myself for not having paid attention each time I upgraded to see if the payouts increase for tasks already in progress, so I decided to level up to 20 just to see, and they do. My payouts for tasks already in progress increased. So now you know. 😉
And btw, folks, I’m not going against the grain here and recommending upgrading past 19. With the squirter at 15, no more Monsarno upgrades are needed (at least during Act 2, who knows with Act 3…). I’m just a bit annoyed with one of my payouts being lower than I’d like (DNA, see above), so upgrading further is only because I’m anal-retentive. 😉

      • her = get.
        Thanks, autocorrect.
        Sigh.

      • Sandra Shill

Thanks for answering my questions about in-progress payouts! I’m glad to know that it works that way…every little bit helps. 😉

If you have space in your town and are interested, feel free to send me a friend request. (My Origin handle is the same as the one here, but without the space.) I’d send you one, but I’d first have to “Decline” all of the ones that are pending, and I hate to do that to those folks right now (especially since some have been waiting quite a while and I may be able to add a couple of them shortly). However, if you’re super-sensitive about being tagged, you may not want me to be your neighbor, as I can’t promise that I’ll never tag you.

      • Tamper with the Building Blocks of Life is a 6-hour DNA-earning task. For each Brainiac you send to complete this task, you get 6 DNA for 6 hours.

      • Level 20 is well worth it. After that I can’t imagine it would be worth it to spend all that fertilizer and corn just to boost DNA by 2 on one job. I’m at 15 and 20 and I think I should have plenty of DNA to spare without upgrading further.

  14. I think I’m missing something…in another post you had a list for “Saint”, but unless I keep glossing over it I can’t seem to find where they get unlocked. It would be super helpful for me to also be able to send Helen Lovejoy out on task. Dang I need more characters! Despite all my work (pardon my language) I feel I’m really sucking at this event. 🙁

  15. Just want to say a huge thank you for all the info. I’m really enjoying this event but the helpful suggestions I’ve found here have made it so much less stressful and more fun. I’m maxing out my Herbicide Squirter at lvl 15 and Monsarano Research at lvl 19. Keeping comic Book Guy, Wolfcastle, Rod/Todd, Quimby and Abe free for Cecil’s daily tasks. Still miles away from the Farmer’s Market, but optimistic about getting it and the rest of the items by then end of the event.

Question: Will I be able to craft multiple Monsano Flower Walls? I’m hoping yes, as they’d make great decor.

Thanks for the tips and help, greatly appreciated.

  16. This may be a bit of a long one…
I’m a premium player who started tapping in December.
I have about 110 playable characters.
I’d guess about 75 or so are Monsarno-able.

I have worked out, from all the upgrades I have already done, that I have, in 18.5 days, or 4.5 for DNA, earned the following craft/ upgrade currency:

    Fertiliser: 27002, or 1459 daily.
    Corn: 12452, or 673 daily.
Dna: 4207, or or 934 daily.

Now, I did early upgrade Monsarno’s first few levels, but this is more then made up for in the above numbers by the fact I accidentally crafted the cane field, so the above numbers, if anything, should perhaps be higher, having used 4500 fert and 2500 corn, or thereabouts.

    If I, extremely modestly, assume that I earnthis same average, although it will be higher due to higher payouts now, I can assume I will earn another;

47417 fertiliser, if we can craft for remaining 32.5 days.
35062 fertiliser, if we can craft until end act 3 in 23.5 days

    21872 corn for long term
    15815 corn for short term

    30355 DNA for long term
    21949 DNA for short term

You could easily add 50% and more to these based on multipliers we know of through act two, never mind act three.

So If you are in a similar position to me upgrade wise and fretting about being able to craft in time… Don’t be.

You’ll probably manage one of everything by the end! Or three farmers markets if you really want them!

    • And to craft one of all non upgrade given items, you need “only”
      39250 fertiliser
      11700 corn
      14400 dna

I appreciate there will be more act three…

    • I’ve upgraded to level 7 but trying to get the Farm Now. And it feels like 4 ever. I Need more fertilizer. I’ve been doing task 4 fertilizers but not adding up. Any advice. Thanks 🙂

      • Take a look at some of the payouts in the Math post for Fertilizer. See if any of those help.

        http://tstoaddicts.com/2015/05/01/math-of-earning-act-two/

      • If you haven’t already, I would recommend upgrading your sprayer.

You can squish a maximum of 288 Bob clones per day (if you didn’t let you town ever get full), but that is probably not reasonable for most people, so let’s assume you squish around half that per day, 150. The material you get varies each Bob clone, but the distribution is around 50% fertilizer, 30% corn and 20% DNA.

        At level 1 sprayer, you get 300 fertilizer per day (150 * 4 * 50%)
        At level 2 sprayer, you get 525 fertilizer per day (150 * 7 * 50%)
        At level 5 sprayer, you get 675 fertilizer per day (150 * 9 * 50%)
        At level 8 sprayer, you get 825 fertilizer per day (150 * 11 * 50%)
        At level 11 sprayer, you get 1200 fertilizer per day (150 * 16 * 50%)
        At level 13 sprayer, you get 1575 fertilizer per day (150 * 21 * 50%)
        At level 15 sprayer, you get 1875 fertilizer per day (150 * 25 * 50%)

So, as you can see, your payout increases substantially the more you upgrade. Basically, a fully upgraded sprayer nets you 6 times the amount of fertilizer a non-upgraded one does.

As I upgraded mine, I really noticed the increase in my fertilizer collection rate (as well as corn and DNA), and it didn’t take long to get my farmer’s market. Now, it really seems to me that DNA is going to be the hardest one for me to get, and I am trying to decide if upgrading Monsarno past level 17 (the last big fertilizer upgrade) is worth it.

  17. consensus for upgradimg seems to be monsarno at lvl19.
I say: if you’re an active player it is worth it to upgrade to lvl20!

Look just at the chart for fertilizer tasks.
you see that the 1 hour job for fertilizer goes from 5 at lvl 19 to 6 at lvl 20. at lvl 21 there is no increase.
    what does it mean:
let’s say there are 15 characters with the 1 hour task
let’s say you assign these tasks 10 times a day
with 24 days left that is 3600 fertilizer from this task and from these 15 characters alone. That is more than the upgrade to lvl20 costs.

PLUS you get the increase for many other tasks and characters as well!. for free if you want so. 😉
as you can see, levling up to lvl20 is totally worth it.

  18. Has anyone done the math on upgrading…ie in the long run will you spend more on upgrading than you have a hope of recovering from the increased payouts…at a glance it looks like no, at least for fertilizer past lvl 8, but might be worthwhile to go up to 11. No matter how long the event is if I spend on upgrading, and the characters have to stay on fertilizer longer to make up for the spent fertilizer, that’s longer before they can focus on DNA……man this fence is starting to hurt my butt…

Also, anyone know if the new monsanto buildings from upgrading are just useless decos like the last ones.

Anyone know if the gas an grub has any decent payouts?

I’m still 5k away from the farmers market, but thinking that I’ll continue to go for it, then focus on the gas and grub realizing that no matter what course I choose, crafting materials are coming slowly enough that whatever act 3 offers, will be totally out of my reach.

    • Gas Grub pays out $120.12xp/6hrs.

    • Gross, I did my own math…for those curious, upgrading from lvl 8 to lvl 11 will cost 4,050 fertilizer.

      Using:
      8 Dimwits on 8hr task 2xday nets +68 additional fertilizer/day
      8 Pessimists on 4hr task 3x day nets +48 fertilizer/day
      6 seniors 2hr task 4xday nets +24 fertilizer/day
      4 kooks 1hr task 6xday nets +96 fertilizer/day
for a grand total of 236 additional fertilizers earned each day after the upgrade.
So it would take about 17 days just to earn back the extra fertilizer that was spent on the upgrade assuming all those characters remained dedicated to fertilizer tasks. While corn payouts increase along the way it also cost corn…and that’s all without unlocking a single additional DNA task.

So I’m going to hop off the fence and keep plugging away at the farmer’s market and not worry about upgrading until something changes.

  19. When Act 2 rolled in, I was close to getting the Farmer’s Market, so I decided to hold off on upgrading Monsarno until I got the Market. Which I did, but I’m still only on level 8 (I’ll probably be jumping to level 9 before the night is over). I see so many players are further ahead (not that I’m worried, we have plenty of time). I was wondering why a couple of my neighbors had 2 Monsarno buildings which aren’t even being offered in my game, but this post clears that it up, they’ll come with level updates.

My local Fox channel recently re-ran The Simpsons episode with the Monsarno company which this event is based on (I think it is called, ‘The Man Who Grew Too Much’ or something similar to that). I freeze-framed the scene with the Monsarno buildings and noticed that there were more buildings than what was in the game (to my knowledge at the time). Now I know there are two more coming. It also means I need to re-landscape my Springfield to make room for them in the Monsarno complex. I already added the volleyball court after noticing it in the episode.

  20. Thank you so much for posting charts of the crafting items and their associated levels. Extremely helpful.
