Where Did THAT Come From – Homer Referee & Soccer Lisa

Hey hey tap ballers! In our silly lil game, we sometimes see things pop in that we have no clue as to their Origin. They seem familiar, but we just can’t pinpoint from where. So that is why we decided to make a fun lil reminder out of it. To let you know just Where did THAT Come From?

So with the Tap Ball Event, all sorts of new stuff has appeared in our games. Right from go… we got new skins for characters and two of them were Homer Referee and Soccer Lisa.  But what does human foosball have to do with two of the Fab 5 in the Best. Show. Ever.?  When and where did they actually appear?Let’s put on our shin guards and kick our way into the Simpsons TV Series to find out.

“Marge Gamer” (S18:E17)

Marge has a crisis at the Springfield PTA meeting (Let’s Fail Your Children Together lol) when she can’t fill out the roster because she doesn’t have an e-mail address. She finally gets linked in to the interweb and finds 629,000 results for her name. Now she knows what googling yourself means. The internet has it all and she’s just like Christopher Columbus… she discovered something millions of people knew about before her. Browsing the net, she gets hooked on Earthland Realms. Pretty funny stuff too.

But that’s not soccer-related.  No worries my fellow ballers, I wouldn’t steer you wrong. In the B-plot, Lisa is off to play soccer. She fell in love with it after watching Bend It Like Beckham. At Lisa’s game… the game is cancelled because there’s no referee. Homer offers to ref the game after hearing the promise of free snacks. Thankfully, he had a ref uniform because he was fired from Foot Locker.

Homer’s a pretty stinky ref because he doesn’t even know the rules. Makes sense since earlier he admitted to calling it human foosball.

Homer becomes a much better ref after watching hours and hours of soccer for his daughter. He calls a foul on Jessica Lovejoy after she trips Lisa but Lisa takes advantage of Homer’s attention and turns out to be a flopper. After Homer gives her a yellow and red card, Lisa is none too happy.

The whole episode ends well with Homer making up to Lisa by buying her a BBC soccer documentary. Homer retires his ref shirt by painting it white but at least Lisa sees that Homer was a good ref and that soccer was making her insane “just as it did the continents of Europe and South America.”

Of course, Homer Referee returns later in “You Don’t Have to Live Like a Referee” (S25:E16). Lisa ties the Stuffwich’s Sub Sandwich hero contest with an impromptu speech about her Dad being a hero. The topic? When he was a soccer referee and had the guts to red card his only talking daughter. He may not be famous, rich or in any history books but he worked two jobs to get her a pony, started her saxomophone playing and knows how to take off a Band-Aid properly. “In the history of soccer, he is the only parent to ever take sides against his own kid.” That’s what hero’s do.

Homer is a grade school hero and the World Football Association takes notice. They hire him to referee the World Cup to help curb the epidemic of referees being bribed to throw games. From the premier league to the playground, all games have been tainted. The Simpson family is off to Brazil! They try to bribe Homer but he stays a stand-up guy and refs correctly even if he can’t believe the yellow and red cards don’t stand for mustard and ketchup.

So there you go my friends. Referee Homer and Soccer Lisa in the Best. Show. Ever. Both episodes are pretty funny too. I trimmed the second but you can read the episode recap here if you want more.
