Tap Ball 101: Community Prizes

Some changes were made to the Community Prizes on 7/7, these changes have been updated on the post below.  You can also check out more details on the change post here

Hey Howdy Hey Tappers!

Act 2 of Tap Ball launched last week and with it we saw the return of Community Prizes!

Initially launched in October 2013, Community Prizes was another aspect of events designed to get the Tapped Out Community to work together for a goal, in each case the goal was a group of prizes.  They were short lived though, as we only saw them for Halloween 2013 and Christmas 2013 (You can check out details from Halloween here and details from Christmas here).  After that EA tried a bunch of different methods to engage people in the games, but there were always cries for Community Prizes to return.  So now those long time Tappers have their wish and they’re back!

Of course being that they were only around for the last two major events in 2013, I know many of today’s Tappers have no clue what they are, how they work, or what the heck is going on.  I also know that the numbers can seem overwhelming, they always have.  So let’s break down the ins and outs of Community Prizes and how exactly they work for this event….

2015-07-06 13.56.18

As always let’s start with the basics…

What Are Community Prizes?

Community Prizes are a group of prizes that can be won in your Springfield if the ENTIRE Tapped Out Community reaches the goals set by EA.

Is the Counter Just For Me and My Neighbors, or Is It Tapped Out Players World Wide?

It’s the collective total of ALL Tapped Out Players World Wide, so not just you and your neighbors.

How Do I Unlock the Community Prizes?

Community Prizes will unlock at Part 9 of the Act 2 questline.  You’ll get a prompt that says this:

2015-07-03 08.21.18

That will unlock your ability to see the prizes and start collecting Sports Balls.

How Do I Collect Sports Balls?

2015-07-06 14.17.42

There are a few of different ways to get Sports Balls:
-You can purchase them in the Amateur Shop for 500 40 ico_june2015_amateurbucks_md
-You can earn them from Daily Training Tasks (there are three in Daily Training (and each one should unlock several balls for you to throw), but won’t appear for a little while)
-You can earn them by collecting balls your neighbors send you. (we’ll cover this more in depth below) If you see a ball bouncing around in your town tap on it.  You have a 20% 68% chance that that ball you collected will earn you a ball to throw at your neighbors town.

How Does it Work?

It’s pretty simple really, you collect Sports Balls and send them to your neighbors and that’s it.
You’ll have a sports ball counter on the bottom left of your Main Springfield (next to Cap and Amateur Buck totals), this will tell you how many Sports Balls you have available to throw.

2015-07-06 14.17.52

When you have more than 1 you can visit a neighbor and you’ll see in the upper right corner of their screen the Sports Ball Icon with a the number of balls you have available to throw.  Tap on that Icon to throw the ball.

2015-07-06 14.18.07

You’ll then see the ball rolling around your friend’s Springfield.

2015-07-06 14.18.33

And that’s it, you’ve contributed to the Community Prize Total!

For the Questline, Do I Need to Spend the 500 ico_june2015_amateurbucks_md to Complete it?

Honestly, I’m not 100% sure because I’ve already completed it.  I know that you do need to complete the questline for Act 2 in order to advance to the Act 3 questline when it hits.  I’ve seen a few comments from players saying ones they’ve collected in their town have counted towards the task complete, but I have not been able to verify it myself.
Personally, I think right now Amateur Bucks are a little easier to accumulate, especially with the fans dropping them…so for the greater community I say  just spend the 500 Bucks when you can…or as they say in baseball “suck it up and take one for the team”.

Do I Have to Participate to Get the Prizes?

No, as long as you unlock the ability to get the prizes you don’t have to participate to actually get them.  BUT I say yes, participate.  Buy some balls and put them in your neighbors town.  You don’t have to do it a ton, but every once in a while is nice.  It helps everyone out to get those prizes.  So don’t be selfish and be a “team player”, everyone’s participation (no matter how great or small) is what makes the goals achievable.

What Happens When I See A Sports Ball In My Town?

You will see sports balls rolling along in your town (they can be VERY hard to see, especially if you have a large town).  They’ll look like one of these:

ico_june2015_soccerball_lg ballbeach_back_walk_image_1 ballfootball_back_walk_image_1

If you see one, Tap on it!  You’ll have 20% 68% chance of earning a free sports ball to throw to another neighbor!   It’s a great way to earn free Sports Balls!

Will I See Any Sort of Notification That There’s a Sports Ball In My Town?

No.  There are no popups indicating that someone left you a Sports Ball.  It’s mostly just look around your town, if you see it Tap it.  But for the most part you’re “flying blind” about it.

Will I Be Able To See Who Left Me a Sports Ball?

When you Tap on the Sports Balls they’ll only say Ball Collected (or + 1 Sports Ball if it’s one of those 20% ones) it will not tell you which neighbor left it.

I’ve Been Sending Balls To Me Neighbors and No Ones Throwing Them Back, What Gives?

First of all remember that there’s no indication in the game who sent the ball a player just tapped.  So they may not know how to give credit too.
Second, it’s difficult to accumulate Sports Balls.  Just because you sent one doesn’t mean the player will have one to send back.  Even if they tap on that one there’s only a 20% chance it’ll turn into a Sports Ball to throw…so be patient and don’t unfriend people because of it.

Remember it’s a Community Goal.  As long as they’re throwing Sports Balls too, whether they’re to you or not, means that they’re contributing to the Community Total for the prizes…and that’s something everyone should be happy with.

How Long Do I Have to Tap A Ball in My Town?  Do They Disappear After a While?

Honestly, I don’t know.  I’m still checking to see if I see anything in the files that indicates a timer on them.  However, I can tell you I dropped a Sports Ball in my C town from my A town a couple of days ago and it’s no longer bouncing around in my C town.  So it does look like they have a timer, how of a timer?  That I’m unsure of at this time.

What Are the Community Prizes?

Here’s the breakdown:

Tapped_Out_Community_Prize_Donuts10 Donuts- 110,880,000 ico_june2015_soccerball_lg

springfieldarms_menu Springfield Arms- 230,400,000ico_june2015_soccerball_lg

How Can I View the Prizes/Counter?

It’s simple, just bring up the event hub in your town.  Scroll to the very bottom and you’ll see the Community Prize icon, tap on it and it’ll show you the prizes and latest totals.

2015-07-06 14.04.13

Why Is the Counter Going So Slow?!  It Feels like We’re NEVER Going to Earn All the Prizes!

I know.  It’s moving slow right now.  I get it, everyone’s frustrated by it.  But keep in mind we’ve never not achieved all of the Community Prizes, I have a feeling now that the holiday weekend is over something will happen to cause the counter to start to spike.

I can also tell you that the in game counter is only an estimate of what the actual total is.  While the counter itself is very real, the one we see in game (because it changes every second) is only an estimate based on the last average the server took.

So just keep playing your game and try not to focus too much on the numbers.

And that I think covers all of the details of the Community Prizes!  Hopefully all of the players who weren’t around in 2013, will now get the hang of things and we can all work together to earn the prizes!

What are your thoughts on Community Prizes?  Thoughts about the prizes being offered?  How about the Sports Ball challenge?  Have you earned any for free so far by tapping?  Sound off in the comments below, you know we love hearing from you!

  1. There’s a timer of about 24 hours. Had a ball that registered but didn’t throw it and now it’s gone. Although, I’ve had some game problems, like costumes not showing up and not getting a full 90 amateur bucks/hats.

Can anyone please tell me how to throw a ball in other Springfield i can’t figure it out thanks

  3. I’ve yet to see one ball past the one I bought and dropped. As for the counter? If EA doesn’t drop an update to correct the required totals, I really don’t see how these goals will be reached.
I know, I know ” be patient,” but the holiday is over and not much has changed. Frankly, the buy soccer ball task has seemed like a big ripoff so far…

    • How many neighbors do you have? The more you have, the more likely you should be to receive a ball from someone…

  5. Is anyone actually doing this!?! I’m hardly playing tap ball let alone crafting the balls for the community. It’s too much going on and we def not obtain any community prizes.

There are 14 days left, and 5oo-something million balls required. We have 1.6m. It’s not possible to achieve ANY of Community Prizes as the game stands right now. The maths simply doesn’t support it. It’s _literally_ impossible.

I never noticed but I believe that the high school has balls on the roof in all towns. Figures that it becomes part of the game that we see this.

    • Yes I hadn’t noticed. I think there is also one on the school roof. Haven’t seen any others in my town. One of my neighbours has at least 6 balls bouncing around their town!

  8. Nice recap, thanks.

My game crashes as soon as I tap on the community prizes tab (already tried restarting game and rebooting iPad). Is anyone else experiencing this?

    Like

    • The game crash happens to both my partner and myself, both on iPads, always when checking on the latest numbers for the community prizes.

      Like

    • My game has been crashing my iPad all the time during this event. I can guarantee it will crash when I view the upgrade players screen. Usually once or twice while visiting neighbors, too.

  9. I’ve decided not to buy the balls. We are only 1.3% through to getting the donuts so I’m not getting too excited about the other commumity prizes …although Duff Truck is a want.
I’m sorry if it’s selfish but I’d rather spend amateur bucks on more bleachers and hopefully a second bowling game.
I don’t think I’ll upgrade players either, although for the daily tasks we need to win games sometimes so I’ll keep an eye on it.

  10. Community Prizes = Community Goals = Community Totals

All Tappers have to do is send a Sports Ball (or Sports Balls) into their Neighboreenos’ Springfields (I ❤ 'd & miss Community Prizes, I say Tappers who participate? get to appreciate ) 🙂

Thank you EA for bringing back Community Prizes!

    • I don’t think you understand what’s required. It’s not a case of “everybody grab a broom, pitch in and do a little hayseed dance.”
The earnings rate required, both of amateur bucks and balls, to achieve these prizes are not possible. Some people are waiting for some kind of swell or uptick as players reach the required level. Act 2 started half a week ago, and the quest line to get there was one 8 hr task. At that point, the player is asked to perform exactly what is required for each Community Ball. Everybody’s already done it once. Or, it takes a good half a week to earn enough for a ball. Either way, this thing isn’t happening – the swell is already here.
There would need to be more than 10 times as many TSTO players as there are in the world, and that’s assuming every single one of them played around the clock. For the record, the current rate is about 3 per second, down from the highest peak that I’ve seen of 7 per second. Divide that into 110,000,000 and figure out how long it will take. Then try it on 538,040,000.

      • So many balls are being wasted. Why? Because if you drop a ball on someone before they get that task to buy it, they will never see it! I verified this myself.

Also .vVerified by me, and others on the forum, that if you have the task, and tap a ball in your town, and hit the 20% chance of getting a ball, then after you drop it in another town it will clear that task for you. Most efficient would be to drop it on someone who was short the 500 and who had not got past the task.

So… the most efficient way for the community to work at this would be to get everyone past that task ASAP. If you can buy it with 500, do it. Otherwise communication between the community about who has the task and is short the 500 by quite a bit, could help. There could be a request/answer center for such and temporarily adding a cooperative neighbor with a ball would help those people.

      • I don’t think people are expecting an uptick at the required level in the game, but rather when players are done leveling up their tap ball characters (I know I’m shooting for a 5-star team before I get more than that first ball). We’re also going to be getting balls for the daily challenges, plus EA has a history of drastically lowering the requirements for community prizes if they’re clearly not going to be met. It’s just really a little too early to be throwing our hands up and calling it a non-starter at this point.

      • At 7 a second its something like 185 days to hit 110 million. To hit 110 only by the end of the event, we’d need to average mid 90 something a second from here out. Super rough math.

        • You’re probably missing the biggest variable of all. EA. It’s not unlike them to make them more accessible. Listen to the experts, relax.

      • I take it you never experienced a community prize event before. They always seem impossible but we’ve always gotten everything. I think most players are still leveling up their players, most are nearly done, after that you’ll see a spike.

  11. The one ball I’ve received to date from my 90+ neighbors landed on a street, so it was pretty each to spot. Do they always land on the street, or are they sometimes in the grass?

  12. In my B town when I collected a ball today I got credited one to throw to a neighbour, which I did. In my A town this credit has never happened & my ball score still shows zero. This same was true for both my towns until today. The inconsistency is annoying to say the least!

I initially bought 1 ball for each town. I’m finding the whole toss a ball idea to be a bit useless, especially as the Community Prize tally marker is moving so slowly & prize level numbers for the event seem extremely high when compared to past events.

  13. I hope it picks up soon, it’s a bit of a slog when it takes a couple of days to earn enough amateur bucks to buy just one ball.
At least I saw one ball in my town! 😀 Thank you whoever it was.
I was just quitting the game as I was rushing off somewhere, thinking naively that I’d have a chance to tap it when I returned… nope, zilch, nada… it had disappeared when I got back to the game, hah!

  15. Has the issue of tapping neighbors players from 50 tickets to 90 resolved? I counted tonight & am still at 50. I was one of the people who got through my buy/give a soccer ball task by re-gifting a ball dropped into my town. I still have not actually purchased a soccer ball & am wondering if maybe that is connected? I started a couple days late & so put my tickets into character upgrades thinking a boost in wins would be more tickets quicker & then more balls. But doesn’t appear to be. Also, fans in my town have reduced in numbers today. I’m getting 2-3 an hour & it was definitely more before. Any thoughts would be appreciated as the ticket aspect is painfully slow. There are so many goodies in the ticket exchange I want! But I have no idea how with so few tickets coming in. Ironically I am ahead in hats (just got Springy!) since I was so behind on daily tasks & we can start back-back. (LOVE that!!!)

    Like

    • No i think it’s back to 50…although we’re still seeing reports of players saying 35-39..

      Like

    • I don’t think it’s connected with not buying a ball. I bought a ball to get through the task and my tally for today was 47 tickets (and less than that yesterday). I wonder if playing tap ball has an effect? Maybe it takes away from neighbor actions? Like if you have a neighbor who is not playing tap ball but has buildings to tap, tapping those would take away from the actions for the event.

Sooooo… I MAY have caved and bought Furious D. He’s just so cool! And I love having animals roaming around my town. But that used all my freemium donuts and I’m back down to six. I kinda regret spending so many on the mystery boxes. I didn’t even realize I had already gotten all the best prizes and just kept buying them hoping for something even better (this was before I started reading this site).

  19. There’s a question I’ve been meaning to ask about the Family Guy Mobster Event that applies here now as well. In Family Guy, there is a Leaderboard prize list similar to the Community Prize List here.

The question I have is… do you get the one prize we all end up at or do you get all of the prizes in the list up to the max award we qualify for? For example in Tapped Out, if the community gets the max number of balls thrown, will we get the 10 donuts all the way through The Gridiron?

    Thanks!

    Like

    • First, the leaderboard prizes and VERY different than the community prizes. They’re completely different in fact. Leaderboard you’re playing against other players to earn ONE prize. Community Prizes, you’re working with other players to earn all of the prizes.

  21. Maybe it’s just me but these community prizes just don’t seem all that great. Ten donuts? The apartments. Another duff item, and a truck which we have others of? Maybe if I could put the truck on the road is be excited for more vehicles. Personally I’d love a character like the babysitter bandit or any of homers gay roommates or a building like fiesta terrace or marge’s lover Jacques or I don’t know anything better than these community items.

    Like

    • Well, could be just me, but I think the community prizes are awesome! Way better than most of the freebies from most recent events. Now, if only we can be assured we will get there! (I know…I know…what Alissa says, but it’s going sooooo slow).

      • What’s awesome about them? Springfield Arms? We have plenty of dumpy springfield buildings now (in fact i have a dumpy springfield area in my town haha). amateur bucks? duff beer truck? The gridiron? Just nothing shiny and fancy. Yeah there are 2 buildings but they aren’t famous in the world of the Simpsons. These just aren’t that excitable to me.

  26. I think EA ballsed up this community event. If it truely were “a game of catch” the ball would persist to throw again. So after a few days the count of balls in play for catch/throw would be growing with people occasionally buying new balls and we would reach goals a lot easier than we seem to be progressing.
From my experience caught a free ball and threw it which progressed the storyline and have bought zero balls. 500 is a lot to accumulate when you can only play games every 4hrs as only have 6 players.

    • Same here, somehow, I think the Sports Balls should be much easier to earn, perhaps with 100% of getting a ball when you tap one so you can send heaps, like xmas 2013, then it’d be a lot more fun and perhaps the targets could even be higher, in 2013 the targets were 30 billion and 1.2 billion respectively!

      Like

    • Ooooooo, good point! That really would work so much better and it would be so fun to come in to find your town overflowing with balls and start tossing them all around again. At least like in the past, where we could automatically throw 3 balls into every town as we’re visiting would be great.

  27. Well so far I have left quiet a few balls for my neighbours to catch, it’s a shame they probably have no idea I sent them tho lol and out of 100 neighbours I have had 2 balls sent to me soooo doesn’t look good, but still I have faith ☺

I sent a ball to a neighbor late at night and she checked the next day and couldn’t see it. Perhaps it only lasts until the “day” turns over? For sure it was less than 24 hours.

That could also explain why some people aren’t seeing any sent to them if they only last until the day marker in the game changes.

People can let you know their experiences.
