Well here in the US today marks the unofficial end of Summer….Labor Day. I think it’s funny how here in America we don’t bother using calendars to mark the start and end of our summers…we just know Memorial Day is the unofficial start and Labor Day is the unofficial end. Sometimes I think we just like the excuse for a good Barbecue!
Of course Labor Day isn’t really about the end of summer…and it isn’t only celebrated in the US (our friends up in Canada are celebrating it today as well…). Labor Day (or Labour Day) is a celebration of the workers movement. It’s meant to honor those who contribute to the strength and prosperity of their country. (you can read more about it here)
Anywho… most Americans will spend today soaking up what’s left of their summer and spend time with their families and friends down the shore at parades, picnics and watching fireworks! And since Bunny, Wookiee and I are all located in the US… you can throw us into that bunch! Don’t worry… we’ll still be popping in and out of the comments throughout the day to help you with all of your Monorail questions. Just keep in mind it might take us a little while to moderate through all the comments, so we thank you in advance for your patience!
And YES…there WILL be a calendar post coming. We thank you for your patience as we’ve kind of tried to take a long weekend to rewind and recharge. (and in my case put together baby furniture)

I worked EXTREMELY hard this weekend! I’m secretly preparing to do a MAJOR cleaning project while my husband is away next week, and this weekend was the only time I could have a bunch of hours to research and purchase what I’ll need.
So, Saturday was research day…spent about 10 (or more?) solid hours on my computer, researching what I wanted to get and the best place to get each thing.
Sunday I had to do regular work (I took last Monday off as a swapped vacation day) and create a bunch of things for a town committee I belong to – another 10-11 your day.
Today was shopping day, which, given my physical condition (which was extra bad today), was a real struggle that I went at for about 6 straight hours. The good thing was that I collected enough money doing some market research stuff that it paid for a lot of my purchases!
So, I’m thoroughly exhausted, but proud of myself for staying so focused and productive all three days. I just wish I didn’t have an extra-early important business meeting tomorrow an hour earlier than I usually start work!

Just an ordinary monday for me. Work during the day, TSTO in the evening. Labour Day is May 1st over here. Next holiday coming up is October 3rd – kind of our 4th of July 😉
Labor day is also May 1st here in Brazil. Incidentally, September 7th is our independence day, so today was also a holiday here. Of course, here holidays are more about not having to go to work than anything else.

I made my own calendar. This act lasts for eleven days and the final prize is at 154.550 bells and whistles. If I can get at least 14.050 per day I am fine. Now, with 7 days and 14 hours left of the act I have accumulated about 70000 b&w. I will definitely manage to get the final prize if I can keep going like this (and I see no reason why I shouldn’t be able to do that).
Well… So What Is Labor Day?? I still curious about this day Hmm… BTW There’s Not Labor Day In My Country… Indonesia

Happy Labour Day from Victoria, BC! I plan to slap three coats of polyurethane to the kitchen island I built, finish winterizing the outside trim with some caulk and paint, play with my little Dude before we ship him off to grade two tomorrow, and plan a bit for our trip to Kauai next week (life is a pretty sweet fruit!).
But my biggest priority is getting the railyard before Saturday!
Howdy from Surrey, BC! Small world! Did your power go out last weekend too? Ours was out from Saturday afternoon until late Sunday night.
Power was fine but there’s tree branches and acorns all over. We live in a pretty central location and Hydro is quick to get on it. Oddly it was the day before that the power went out and totally inconvenient as i went to Home Despot to get some paint mixed…which didn’t happen. Bummer for you half million on the mainland!

Koloa zip line is longest. Princeville ranch combines zip with other stuff. Kauai Backcounty Adventures is only company that does tubing but also does zip lining(very nice as well). Book tubing early. Stay away from brown water if you see it. Kayak up to secret falls is also fun and adventurous. Bring bug spray for zip lining and tubing, our state bird is the mosquito, lol. And yes I understand you’re from Canadia. 😆 Kalalau trail is a hard but beautiful hike that you only need to do the first mile or so to appreciate. Sorry, it’s hard to fit such a great place into a thread comment. Na Pali boat ride is a reasonable substitute for the helicopter, but heli is a bucket list kinda thing. Aloha \m/

Oh I’ll be tapping at the beach for sure. Any tourist traps to avoid? We’re planning to do some hiking and ziplining at Princeville Ranch, the coffee plantation, and plenty of beachtime. Maybe a flight through the canyon. We’re not party people, just looking to kick it island style.
Princeville the town is pretty much a tourist trap. Try to make it out to Mahaulepu beach. It’s a bit bumpy but off the beaten path and most weekdays have like 5 total people on the beach. The road to polihale may still be closed also, but the helicopter flight is a must do. Probably 100 plus waterfalls after all the rain we’ve had.
“Down the shore” very New Jersey place to be. If you haven’t heard it, you should listen to On the Way to Cape May. The song always reminds me of summer. 98.3 in New Brunswick would play it every Friday morning during AM drive time in the summer. Enjoy the day off to those who are celebrating.
Not to rain on the Labor-day parade (which I never heard of a Labor Day parade), there are many of us U.S. citizens that still work on the “holiday”. From store employees (making sure you can buy your celebratory items and food, let alone your Labor Day Sale items) To your police and firemen making sure it is a safe celebration. Sure these folks might get paid holiday pay but the gears of the machine don’t stop while others “relax and have fun” . I do hope all can enjoy but looking at my watch, I need to get ready for work. :/
A lot of store employees aren’t getting holiday pay depending on the state. I haven’t worked for a company that paid holiday pay in over ten years, unfortunately. Usually I would end up working most holidays too, all for regular pay. My last job I was working Christmas for minimum wage.
I’m off today, but no bbq or sitting in a beer garden for me, I’m sorry to say. I’m feeling a bit poorly but will still have to summon up the energy to pack a few boxes in preparation for an upcoming flat move. 🙁
Unfortunately I don’t get “holidays” off with my job and I (one of the few people in the department with kids) got all late shifts for the weekend. So I do not get to celebrate or see my family at all.

In order to give this page a more international feel, I’ll talk about Lithuania. I think Labour Day is celebrated here in May 1, but Communism has given it a black eye, so it is not very popular. Lithuania joined the EU on 1 May and that event is much more visible on that day.
Instead, on 1 Sept. all students go to school, even if it a Sunday. They spend 1-3 ours at school getting their schedule, listening to speeches, going to their home room. Afterwards, they give the teachers flowers. My daughter brought flowers for about 5 of her teachers. Traditionally, the family takes their children who are students out to lunch that day, so it is best to make a reservation in advance. To help combat alcoholism, for several years now, no alcohol has been sold on 1 Sept. Obviously people can stockpile drinks before then, but it is a reminder that one can celebrate without alcohol, a new idea for many. Classes then start in earnest the next school day.
As to the start of summer, there is no real holiday here for that. Western Europe celebrates VE day in early May, but since WWII ended for Lithuania in 1991, we do not. The closest big holiday is Midsummer’s Eve, which is gaining in popularity. Since schools let out here in early to mid June, a celebration around 23 June allows students to recover a bit before the party. Many people go to the beach or a lake on that extended weekend.

Happy Labor day! A paid holiday is always appreciated (how many donuts do they cost :-)) The reason we don’t celebrate Labor Day on May 1, International Labor day, is because of its association with communism and anarchism. The Haymarket riot in Chicago which occurred in early May is credited with initiating all Labor days. It had links to anarchism and was later linked to communism. So the USA and I think Canada chose a different date to keep away from that connection.
What I want to know is why there is a u in the British labour? (And where is the hidden r in colonel).

I’m not an expert but I would guess that as spelling started to standardise, we Brits held on to Latin root spellings because Latin was learned in public (US private/fee paying) schools by the upper classes (aristocracy etcetera) and seen as more correct (or at least something the servants didn’t understand).
In older American documents, there are plenty of instances of the British spellings but post independence, I think Americans started to favour spelling variants closer to to French. After all, the French were considered friends and allies, plus they hated the Brits too!
The funny thing is, back in the days when spelling was more or less, however one felt like it in any given instance, people like Shakespeare used color and center.
Oooooh… a discussion on the history of language. I tend to agree with you although nowadays if you told an AMerican they favored the French, they’d probably demand I start writing “favoured”. Just the other day in class my porf mentioned how English is a Germanic language and a few of the students got all bothered. Alas, they forget or are ignorant of the history of the Romans and Germanic tribes. Props for letting me air out my inner History nerd and allowing a break from English essay writing. WOnder hoe ticked my prof would be if I went back and used the Anglo-Saxon spellings?

Expatrie-
The simple answer taught in US schools is that in the early 19th century, US language experts like Daniel Webster and newspaper editors deliberately altered the spellings so that US English would be different from UK English. This makes it sound like UK English has remained a static and stagnant while US English is progressing towards the language’s perfection. Propaganda is subtle like that.
The reality is far more complex. UK English has also been changing the endings according to something I read recently and in the 1930s a Missouri dialect was documented, that, according to MO conservation magazine in the 1990s, was closer to Shakespearean English than any other existing dialect anywhere in the world or at least the UK. I.e. critter is Shakespearean, unlike animal. The advent of radio and TV wiped out the dialect and it is no longer spoken today, as I remember it.
The UK spellings seem to be taken from French rather than Latin, which latter is much more straightforward in its spelling (orthography).
And in case you want to get into details, the people in the UK say they speak English while people in the States speak American. The Americans beg to differ.
And, interestingly, the country with the greatest number of English speakers is actually India, so there’s an argument that could be made that their “version” of English (which differs somewhat from both UK and American English) is the “right” one (if one wanted to argue that there is a “right” one, which I certainly don’t!)
The ‘u’ in labour and other words (the original English spellings) were dropped as part of proposed spelling changes by Noah Webster (yes, the dictionary guy). He actually proposed even deeper changes, but these subtle ones stuck.
I don’t think the change had anything to do with aligning the spelling with French. A little research tells me that the -our spelling is _because_ of Old French, whereas -or is more aligned with the original Latin. Americans are now safe to hate those Frenchies. 😉 (I say in jest, natch.)
Colonel is more complicated. (It doesn’t even look like a real word anymore…) I couldn’t find a single source on this. This site (http://mentalfloss.com/article/58515/why-colonel-spelled-way) covers a few more aspects than the others I visited.
Colonel used to be spelled “coronel” due to the French (them again), but since the word originates from Italian (and then from Latin, natch), the spelling eventually returned to an L type spelling. But, why an R to begin with? Because of a process called “dissimilation”, which makes similar sounds into different sounds (in this case, the two Ls). (Another example is “pilgrim”.)
Also at play appears to be elision (the same process in use in our contractions (like “can’t” and “o’er”)) and, possibly, rhoticization (the reason R was chosen).
I said it was complicated…and I meant it! hah 🙂

Happy Labour day to all of you. We don’t have this holiday in England but I think we should. I love the idea of celebrating ordinary workers, the people who make a country run and having parades & things so the men & women who work, particularly in the public sector can get some recognition. 😀
Well, bit of history lesson, in 1898(?) the Pullman Porter Strike morphed into a larger strike. The military and police became involved, 30 people killed, millions (1,000,000’s) of dollars in damage occured resulting in congress passing Labor Day in a mere 6 days and sending it to President McKinley for signature and enactment.
Great concept coming from tragic circumstances.
On a happier note – whoohoo! – I should close the day at 77,000 b&w. And a target of 145,000. With 7 days left, that’s 10,000/ day with 9,000 from projects, 650 from visits plus all the Possum Popping…. I think I can sleep through the night (west coast that I am, 1:00am is the start time)

Think I blinked and missed our summer in the UK , word has it , it was a couple of days in June . Shame because last year I was in hospital June , July and most of August and it was really nice and warm . The nearest I got to it was looking out the window while on the dialysis machine .Now although I am off work ,I could sit in the garden or go for a stroll if it would stop raining or warm up a bit . As Homer would say ” stupid jet stream ” which apparently , according to it’s flow over the UK deflects high pressure sysems to the south of us and lets in low pressure systems instead which invariably mean wind and rain . No wonder our weather forecasters are so happy , never a dull moment over here , waiting to see what’s coming next …..
Hmmm, I’m in Bristol and the summer has been pretty good here, I’d say.
Think our part of North Devon , on the edge of Exmoor has it’s own micro climate . It can be wet and often foggy and yet in the nearest town – Barnstaple , off the moor and nearer sea level it can be lovely and warm .Scenery makes up for it though , when you can see it . I guess being stuck near to home due to health issues means I haven’t been able to enjoy the better weather in a different location .
I’m in Germany – not all that far away – and we had the hottest summer since ever. Or at least since they started keeping records. And no air condition in my office…
Don’t worry, I found it. Was pretty hot this summer out here in Lithuania and for a long time, not just a week or two in late June. Not 48 C degrees like Texas, but we got up to a semi-humid 33. You are welcome to keep it next year. (Actually the hot air flowed up from Africa, not the usual weather pattern from the North Atlantic.)
