Should I Spend Donuts on the Shinning Maze?

Hey Howdy Hey Tappers!

It’s Halloween in Springfield!  Time to open the donut shop because there are new Halloween themed premium items in our stores!  Now I know you may be trying to decide if these are worth YOUR donuts, but don’t sweat it!  We’re here to tell you what’s worth the donuts and what you might want to hold off on.

Wondering if you should add the Shinning Maze to your Halloween town?  Well before you hit that confirm button let’s break down the pros and cons of adding this maze to your Halloween decor!

Shinning MAze

Decoration: The Shinning Maze
Donut Price: 55 Donuts
Bonus %: 2.25% bonus on all cash and XP
Conform-O-Meter: Vanity +100
Size: 8×8
Unique: Yes, only 1 per Springfield

Leaves Stores on October 20th

Pros:
-Comes with a quest line
-Nice bonus % awarded (although Jet Engine Bike is still better)
-Unique looking decoration for Springfield

Cons:
-Will not help with the THOH Event (in other words does nothing for nightmare/s’more rates)
-No character interaction outside of initial questline
-Not animated.  Basically just sits there.

Final Thought:
Premium:
It’s not a bad buy for premium players.  I’ll probably pass on it, because it doesn’t really do anything…but it’s not a terrible buy.  The bonus % is decent and it does come with a 3 part questline.  So, as I say with all decorations, if you like it…get it. If not, pass.

Freemium:
Pass on this one.  While it does come with a questline and offers a decent bonus %…it’s still a complete pass.  You’re better off with the Jet Engine Bike, for the bonus %.  And if you’re looking for Halloween decor…you’re better off with what you can craft.  Save your donuts on this one.

Of course in the end it’s your decision, we can only tell you what we would/wouldn’t do…and I can tell I’ll most likely pass on this one.   However, this IS a limited-time item.  So if you’re thinking about getting it make sure you make your final decision before it leaves our games on October 20th.

Here’s a look at the little questline that pops up with it…

Willie’s Labyrinth Pt. 1
Martin starts (auto)

Martin: Oh, a hedge maze!  How droll!  Hedge-keeper, I accept the challenge.  I will solve your maze.
Willie: don’t be so sure o’yourself ye fancy little plumpkin!  This is no ordinary maze. Ye best take this flare gun.
Martin: What’s the flare gun for?
Willie: The maze is nigh-unbeatable.  When you’re cold and thirsty and clinging to the last shred of your sanity, it’s the only way we’ll find ye.
Make Youngsters Get Lost in the Maze- x5.  4hrs.  Earns $260, 70xp freemium and premium.
Sherri and Terri: Come and play with us forever!
Martin: No one has ever wanted to play with me! WHAT KIND OF MADNESS IS THIS?!!!

Willie’s Labyrinth Pt. 2
Lisa starts

Lisa: The secret to any maze is to be methodical and to stay calm.
Willie: Ye don’t have what it takes, lassie.
Lisa: That’s what Coach Krupt said about me and the rope climb and it turned out I did have what it takes: A note excusing me from P.E. But this maze will be a piece of cake. You can keep your flare gun.
Make Lisa Get Lost in the Maze- 6hrs, $350, 90xp
Lisa: Help! Help!  I’ve been in here for hours!  Please come and get me!  I don’t want to have to eat my own arm!  I am vegetarian!
Willie: Ye see, lassie?  I knew ye couldn’t conquer this maze.  Ye don’t have the Shinning.

Willie’s Labyrinth Pt. 3
Willie starts

Lisa: The Shinning?  Are you sure you’re pronouncing that right?
Willie: Ach!  Don’t make fun o’ me accent!
Bart: Hey weirdoes, ‘sup?
Willie: Boy!  Are ye here to try yer hand at Willie’s maze?
Lisa: If I couldn’t do it, he certainly couldn’t…
Willie: Stuffit!  I sense greatness from this wee, spiky-headed lad.  He’s got The Shinning.  What say ye, boy?
Bart: Sure, all work and no play, yadda, yadda, yadda.
Make Bart Find a Shortcut Through the Maze- 2hrs, Earns $175, 40xp
Willie: What did ye do to me maze, ye little monster?
Bart: You said you saw my shinning.  I assumed that what you saw was my shinny new chainsaw.  Which I used to cut through the maze.
Lisa: Do you mean “shiny?”
Willie: Quiet!  You’ll get us all sued!!

What are your thoughts on the Shinning Maze?  Will you be spending the donuts to bring it to your Springfield (or did you already)? Where have you placed it?  Thoughts on Halloween so far? Sound off in the comments below, you know we love hearing from you!

  1. I had a maze (outside the castle I never took down), and decided to buy this and incorporate it as an interior section of my existing maze. Love it!

  2. Of course I got it but there’s no way it’s replacing the one I made of hedges in my town, it’s one of then main reasons I won’t nuke.

  3. I bought it because I liked how it looked next to my mini golf course.

  4. ,my computer cannot display this page

    God Bless,

    Donna

  5. I passed on the maze because I created my own Shinning, aka Shining, hedge maze last winter. I’m also a big fan of the movie and the iconic final scene with a crazed Jack Torrance running through the snow, axe in tow (“Dannnny!) As some have pointed out, the only downside is the number of hedges add to the number of items in my town, but I’ve kept it around. Also, while I had fun making it, it did take a bit of work. All work and no play… 😉

  6. I had to get it! Come on its The Shinning!!! Who wouldn’t want to risk getting sued?! Now to bask in television’s warm glowing, warming glow. I will always think of that moment when I look at that maze.

Has anyone encountered weirdness with the latest update and the Cthulhu-like wall segments?

  7. I bought it mainly because I love Stephen King, & the Shinning is near the top of my fav list of his books!
I’m happy with it, saved me the time no to mention items I would need to build my own (I’m sitting on the edge of 4500 items) Right now it’s by my other Halloween items, but as my neighbors know I move things frequently, so probably will move after Halloween!

  8. I definitely had to get this. The quest was fun even though after it’s done it just becomes a decoration.

  9. I got it, figured it didn’t do much but looks decent near the Buddist Temple

  10. I placed my maze next to Mr.Burns’ mansion and made it look like you have to go through the maze to reach his money mountain… looks cool. Wish we could post screenshots 🙁

    jahstudded

  11. “Redrum, Redrum” what’s that finger? I should save my donuts?

(Didn’t buy it) Looks like it only has one exit/entrance and no real center, not exactly a fair Maze. Wish it was animated with a wondering kid or crazed Nicholson look-a-like. But I think it would look cool in winter with a snow on the top.

“Ssap, Ssap” Ok, finger, but I don’t think it is made out of Pine or Maple trees.

  12. I’m a big fan of The Shining and the shinning so I had to get the maze. I placed it behind the Quimby compound along with some topiary figures as an homage to the Overlook Hotel.

  13. Had to get this one because i tried unsuccessfully to make my own maze lol. Looks nice where i made a large hotel with the SH og mansions

  14. Veronica Shawcroft

Not going to get the maze; with doughnuts at a premium (cash flow problem), I’m holding out for something better.

  15. personally im making my own with the hedge pieces we are getting this event and mine looks much cooler

  16. I agree it’s a bit overpriced and I was disappointed by how small it looks when I saw it in neighbors towns. I’m also kind of over bonus % items ever since the tennis court glitch. All that plus the fact that the quest takes a bunch of kids away from crafting makes it an easy pass for me. It’d be fun to make a custom maze out of bramble walls, but I don’t know if I’ll get enough before the event is over.

  17. The Shining….sorry….The Shinning…is one of my favorite movies, so I had to get this.

But I’m also hoping that they’ll also give us a chance to buy the matching hotel.

Perhaps the Underlook Hotel? Or the Ovverlokk? And, of course, a Snow Cat would be a wonderful touch!

  18. The ‘standard’ rate is 2% for 40 donuts like the police car. The jet bike is simply the best deal available, followed by Devil’s float and then items at the standard rate. At the standard rate, 2.25% sells for 45 donuts, so the maze is overpriced by 10 donuts. In other words, it costs ten donuts extra to obtain a unique decoration as opposed to yet another police car. Using the bike as the base rate, 2.25% costs about 33 donuts, making the maze and the ruins 22 donuts overpriced. There is a post in the works about all this math, but THOH trumped the scheduled release.

    • Ok, did the maths for the bike, i.e. per cent times (donuts/bonus) for 2.25%, i.e. 2.25*(30/2) and that yields the price of 33.75 donuts for 2.25% at Jet Engine Bike prices, which means compared to the bike the maze and ruins are overpriced by 21.25 donuts, i.e. you are paying 21.25 donuts for the privilege of having a unique decoration instead of another Jet Engine Bike in your farm. To see how much that farm, whatever the size, would cost you in cold hard real money, wait for the post.

  19. My main reason to pass on this was that I think the custom made mazes look much better as they can be bigger and you can also put something at the centre of them. All I need now though is the shinning mansion to go with it then that might be a different story 🙂

    • Ah, but a custom maze takes a lot of resources that slow your game down. If you want a maze but need to reduce the number of items in your SF, then this is the way to go. But it is a shame they do not have an animation of someone wending their way through it.

  20. Just a quick question on the topic of buying, would i be better off buying the Mausoleum or the pet cemetery. I am stuck between them

    • Honestly it depends on which one you want….they both pay cash so there’s no Bonus %. The nightmare spawns don’t really matter in that regard…

      • Kinda hoping they’ll give the other graveyard also as a purchase, so I can finally complete my church area 😀

    • Do not have the mausoleum, so I cannot say what animation it has, but the pet cemetery has cat paws coming out of the ground in about four or five places in succession, so it is not bad to watch. On the other hand, the cemetery is not small.

    • I accidently bought the Mausoleum, as I think with one of the updates my ‘donut notification’ was switched to ‘off’ and I accidently bought it. ANYWAY, the Mausoleum pretty much doesn’t do much, the doors are kind of halfway open with an eerie light shining through but that’s about all I see. I think it WILL look really neat next to the Pet Semetary though, so I may get that to put them together. If you want one of the other, I’d go with the Pet Semetary.
