Where Did THAT Come From: Kwik-E-Mart Central Office

In our silly lil game, we sometimes see things pop in that we have no clue as to their Origin. They seem familiar, but we just can’t pinpoint from where. So that is why we decided to make a fun lil reminder out of it. To let you know just Where did THAT Come From?

This post I will be going over the Origin of the Kwik-E-Mart Central Office. Why did it show up in our games? What is so important about it? Why is it at the top of a Mountain? Let’s dive into the Simpsons TV Series to find out more.

Season 5, Episode 13: Homer & Apu
It is another day at the local Kwik-E-Mart and Apu is dealing with some not so happy customers. As he is yelling at them out the door about how they can’t harm Twinkies… he picks up a foul odor coming from one of the shelves. It is some Meat that is … uh… slightly expired (Feb 6,1989). He scribbles out the expiration date and places it on the 10 cent bin, but has second thoughts… too late. Homer sees the Bargain Meat and grabs it. Cheap Meat! WOO HOO!!

Even as he is in extreme pain and passing out, Homer still tries to down the last bites and ends up in the Hospital. He quickly returns to the store to complain. Apu offers him 5 pounds of frozen shrimp for his troubles. Homer points out it is not frozen and also smells funny. Apu then offers him 10 pounds. WOO HOO!! And… back to the Hospital Homer goes.

Cut to Homer later watching “Bite Back with Kent Brockman” and gets the idea to tell Kent about the parasites and issues he is having due to the rotten items from Apu. Homer agrees to where a “hidden” camera and mic to catch Apu in the act of selling rancid items. Homer ends up ruining it when he takes off the hat and stomps all over it thinking the buzzing noise it was making is a Bee… or did he? The camera, now on the ground, catches Apu dropping one of the Hot Dogs on the ground… picking and blowing off the nasty bits he picked it up… and put it back on the warmer for sale. MMMMmmmmm convenient store Hot Dogs ***drool***

Corporate Offices are not happy that he followed procedure in selling the rancid items but did NOT follow procedure in putting the blame on somebody else. Apu is stripped of his shirt patches, his pricing guns, and is fired from the Kwik-E-Mart. He just can’t take it, he threatens to take his life by eating one of the Hot Dogs on the warmer, but the Corporate guy just won’t let him. It’s not worth it. Apu is later on the bridge contemplating what to do. No matter where he goes, everyone seems to be laughing at him. As he is wallowing in self pity, he ends up outside the Simpsons in the rain. He is now very angry and blames Homer for what happened. It is time to settle the score. Apu heads to the door, knocks on it, and eerily walks in with his arms outstretched towards Homer. AAAAAAaaaahhh!

Kwik-E- Mart Corporate Apu Thanking Homer

Homer was mistaken, Apu was actually making his traditional pose of apology. He realized that he was in the wrong and wants to make amends to Homer. He is at Homer’s service now. He does the chores and even makes them… uh… dinner? It’s a bit too spicy for Lisa’s taste, but Homer is all for it. He kind of likes Apu waiting on him hand and foot. Apu even got him to use a… ummm… cloth thingy… uh… a napkin. Meanwhile, many Springfielders are giving a job at the Kwik-E-Mart a go. Like Barney… and JAMES WOODS??!! What on earth is he doing in Springfield and why does he want to work there? He is “researching a role” for a new movie.

Apu is really growing on the family. He impresses Marge at the Monstromart by showing her the “tips and tricks” to getting through the check out lines quickly, taught Bart how to twist and contort his body, and even showed Lisa how to play the Shenai. All the vegetables he is feeding the family is even clearing the cholesterol out of Homer’s heart (and into his brain). He is like a member of the family now. Cut to a song and dance routine “Who Needs the Kwik-E-Mart?” very Mary Poppins-esque. It seems Apu is happy… but he is not. He goes to the roof to quietly cry.

There has got be SOMETHING the Simpsons can do to help out Apu. He said he will have to go to the Main Office and appeal his case. Homer quickly chimes in that he will got along… to India… that is 10,000 miles away… over 16,000 kilometers D’OH!

After a long Flight, hitching a ride to the outside of a train, and lots and lots and lots of walking… they finally reach it. The World’s First Kwik-E-Mart. Top of the Himalaya Mountains.

Kwik-E- Mart Corporate Headquarters India

Inside they slowly approach the benevolent, enlightened, President and CEO of Kwik-E-Mart (and a Shop-O-Mart in Ohio). The Wise Old Man tells them they can ask him 3 Questions. That’s great as Apu has just one… but Homer jumps in…

Kwik-E- Mart Corporate CEO

Homer: Are you really the head of the Kwik-E-Mart?
CEO: Yes
Homer: Really?
CEO: Yes
Homer: You?
CEO: Yes. I hope this has been enlightening for you. Thank you, come again.
Apu: But… I must…
CEO: Thank you, come again.

Poor Apu, Homer just has to keep ruining it all for him. Apu chokes him as they come back out of the headquarters, causing them to fall off of the Mountain.

Back home, Apu just can’t give up. He heads down to the Kwik-E-Mart to confront them about his job. He ends up talking to James Woods and is interrupted by a Robber. He takes the bullet for James Woods. Luckily he makes it out alive due to another bullet from a previous robbery caused the new bullet to ricochet. James Woods wanted to thank Apu for saving his life, by getting him his job back at the Kwik-E-Mart.

  1. This episode aired on FOX the day before the Central Market hit our store. It totally suprised and confused me. Lol Its fun to see it in our game, although at that price, it’s not very convenient. 😉

  2. I called a where did that come from and you out it. I do remember watching this episode and the clueless homer ruins everything as usual.

  3. Yes!
Such a classic episode of The Simpsons
(cool building but too large & takes up too much space)

  4. APU: But, sir, I was only following standard procedure.
INSPECTOR: Ah, true. But it’s also standard procedure to blame any problems on a scapegoat or sacrificial lamb.
APU: Uh huh, and if I can obtain for you these animals?

  5. The text on the store sign is different in-game from in the episode; anyone know what the two signs actually translate to in english? (I would imagine the one in the episode is the more entertaining of the two…)

    • If a fellow (anonymous) addict’s comment on the post introducing the Central Office is to be believed, the sign on the TSTO version says “मुख्य कार्यालय” (mukhya kaaryaalay) which means “Head Office.”

I can’t seem to find any translation of the TV version, sadly.

  6. Oddly the thing I want most from that episode is the giant hat (smushed or on Homer’s head).

As usual I see some items and think EA can make an event around it but they don’t. We Could have had an Apu event by collecting dirty hot dogs and expired ham and unlocked the Vegitarian Garden ontop the K-E-M. Chocolate covered Apu (maybe for Valentines day), and other Apu-ie type items that excape my mind at the moment.

The octuplets maybe if they aren’t part of another event. Squishy Lady (but she brings bad memories and I don’t want Homer and I walking backwards in shock) anyway, there is still time and possabilities .
