Woo hoo! The MAGGIE ACT!!!!
In our silly lil game, we sometimes see things pop in that we have no clue as to their Origin. They seem familiar, but we just can’t pinpoint from where. So that is why we decided to make a fun lil reminder out of it. To let you know just Where Did THAT Come From?
It’s still snow time like the present to be playing an event in TSTO and we keep getting more and more amazing stuff. You know what that means… it’s time again for me to dip into my noggin of Simpsons info and write about specific stuff. For this post I will be going over the second prize from Act III of the 2015 TSTO Holiday Event for 9,600 Pacifiers/Binkies/Nuks/Soothers/Dummies/Chupas and the freemium building for $29,000 in-game dollars. Of course, I’m referring to Ms. Sinclair and the Ayn Rand School for Tots. But what does they have to do with the Best. Show. Ever. and Maggie? Where did they come from? Let’s take a look at the TV Series to find out.
First things first, while EA actually gave us the correct origin for this character, I have to point out that her name is not Mrs. Sinclair. Check out this shot from her desk during the first appearance.
Maybe she got married but wouldn’t she change her last name? Maybe as a follower of the philosophies of Ayn Rand she wouldn’t do that or maybe EA got this wrong. I guess I could wax on about who Ayn Rand is but suffice to say you should just do an Oogle search if you don’t know and you’re curious. I’m not sure if the daycare we discover in the Simpsons is an Objectivism school or not but it certainly is a smart name proving some of the hidden thinking you can find in The Simpsons. But enough blabbering by yours truly, let’s head to “A Streetcar Named Marge” (S4:E2) to find our new TSTO items.
Back when I wrote about doing a Simpsons podcast and listed my favorite episodes, Sandrashill mentioned in the comments that she was surprised I left this episode out. I guess EA agrees. I can just say while it didn’t make the list, I do like this episode. You really can’t go wrong with a musical version of A Streetcar Named Desire and some Maggie action from the glory days of The Simpsons. Marge auditions for the play at the Springfield Community Center to spend more time with adults. She is picked to star as Blanche Dubois across from Ned Flanders’ Stanley. The director is Llewelynn Sinclair.
Man I love when Jon Lovitz does characters on the Simpsons. But this post isn’t about the play or voice actor or Marge getting the part because of her real experience with Homer or pissing off New Orleans or “an aging Southern beauty who’s driven to insanity by her brutish brother-in-law Stanley.” It’s about our new freemium daycare center and staff. When Marge shows up for her first practice with Maggie, Llewelynn gives her a card for a daycare center run by his sister… behold… Ms. Sinclair and the Ayn Rand School for Tots.
They’re the only daycare in town not under investigation by the state. Not a big fan of bottles, they aim to help babies find the bottle within. They also have a no pacifier policy much to Maggie’s dismay.
Fun times watching Maggie and the babies try to free the pacifiers. Really makes the Act III currency make sense.
There’s also some cool night time shots of the center. Makes me long for night in TSTO.
Of course, we see the Ayn Rand School and Ms. Sinclair later in “The Longest Daycare”, the 2012 Academy Award-Nominated animated short. It’s really a delightful piece of animation that should’ve won in my humble opinion. This time Maggie is trying to save a caterpillar/butterfly from being killed by Gerald.
Since I know some may not have seen this. Enjoy and thankfully FOX’s Animation Domination still has the video. I love the music so much.
The daycare appears one more time in the couch gag for “Moonshine River” (S24:E1). Homer, Marge, Bart and Lisa metamorphosis into butterflies only to be chased by Baby Gerald with a mallet. What does he have against beauty? Gerald chases them through the daycare and again we see Ms. Sinclair but Maggie saves them.

Oh, my bladder has been demanding I get up at least once a night. Getting older stinks. But! I got Gerald this morning, and now my town is swarming with adorable bears that I don’t have to steal binkies from anymore, woo!

The way I look at it… she is Llewelynn SInclair’s sister and had the same last name. I think she is a Ms. because growing up I remember a lot of lady teachers who used it. Regardless of marital status… I just think EA should have kept it.
You’re spot-on about the significance that the distinction has for the character. They may not have realized, so with luck they’ll fix it if enough attention is brought to it.

I am a fan of Ayn Rand’s books, and am so glad to see that their hatred of her carried over into TSTO. 🙂
Streetcar Named Marge has some of the BEST music in the series. Which is saying something, since they’ve released multiple discs of great tunes of this show…. “I am just a simple paper boy, no romance do I seek…”

My all-time favorite Simpsons episode! I was in heaven to finally get that building, but I do wish there was more to do with it (and Ms. Sinclair had better tasks). Of course, part of the reason it’s my favorite episode is that wonderful production of “Streetcar!” – I’d be in double heaven (whatever that means) if the game would do something with that, too! (I need that director in my town…he could have a great questline! Also, there might be some ladies out there who want to see Ned’s manly bare chest, too….)

I mentioned this elsewhere, but EA goofed on her name, as the plate on her desk clearly says “Ms. Sinclair” and not “Mrs.” It’s not pedantic or nitpicking (not that anyone does that around here!) because it’s very much part of the character’s, well, character.
I know this isn’t the case for the character here, but I am married and use Ms instead of Mrs, because the culture I married into doesn’t have women change their name. Staying Miss sounded wrong, because I’m married….but Mrs Original Name sounded more wrong, because I’d feel like I married a family member (funny story, when we met with the priest for the first time he asked my father’s name, then mother’s, and when I gave the same surname he balked and very carefully asked “Are they…..related?” ;-). Never thought I’d be married *or* a ms, but here I am.

I’m married, but I use “Ms.” for a different reason… “Ms.” was invented because it wasn’t “right” that a woman’s marital status be an identifier when a man’s isn’t (he’s “Mr.” regardless). I used Ms. when I was single and I started to use Mrs. when I got married until I realized that, by doing that, I was just turning “Ms.” into “Miss” (which I think a lot of women mistakenly do), so, to support the original intention of “Ms.,” I went back to using it.
Perhaps those of you born in the 80s or later might not “get” all of this, but things were very different before the mid-70s. I still remember a time when the New York Times classifieds section had separate “Help Wanted” sections for men and women, and I’m “only” in my mid 50s. We’ve definitely made some major progress since then, but we still have a way to go before we can say that we’ve reached full equality (at least in the U.S.).
I never noticed any of these gender issues growing up. Not that there weren’t any. I should ask my mom if she experienced any, especially after I was born. I think my region was pretty progressive (but not necessarily overly feminist).
I agree on using the same title regardless of status. Maybe even a non-gender version for all of us. Why are we still stating status at all? hah. anywho…
Oh – I grew up in one of the absolutely most progressive areas (NYC), and I never personally, knowingly faced gender discrimation, per se. But the messages were out there, especially when I was very young…from the classified ad “segregation” that I mentioned earlier, to the “What Shall I Be” board game for girls that I played as a little girl, in which you had the options of becoming an actress, a model, a teacher, a stewardess, a ballet dancer, or a nurse. (Fortunately, I got a lot of “counterprogramming” from my family, environment, schooling, etc., so I didn’t grow up actually assuming those were my only choices.) But can you imagine a game like that coming out today??
good for you… i still get pissed off when filling out forms where that box is mandatory. why should men have 1 qualifier and women now have 3? it is total bs. no box! we are all people and should be no boxes needed! argh. sorry this was supposed to be a thank you to sandra for being the only mrs i know of that goes by ms… i hope there are more out there… of course mostly i wish it didn’t matter. I am also very happy to have m sinclair smoothing her skirt doing nothing of particular interest in my town! 🙂

I’ve only seen him in the earlier stuff: In season 5 we saw him being held by a woman, and again in a stroller pushed by a different-looking woman. We learned his name in season… 7 was it? It was “The Canine Mutiny” (too lazy to look it up) at the award ceremony Quimby gave for Laddie. Anything after that, I know nothing about.
I was always curious about in Streetcar…when all the babies r there with their pacifiers…and its all creepy sucking. Then when they leave after picking up Maggie and that guy walks by with the dog. Is that a Hitchcock and The Birds reference?
I don’t remember the specific frame you’re referencing, but most of the plot of Maggie and the babies in the daycare liberating the pacifiers is a parody of the movie “The Great Escape.” I’m generally not big on war movies, but that one is a classic and definitely worth watching, if you’ve never seen it.
No…when homer and kids walk in and all the babies are all over and its all creepy quiet except for pacifer sucking. Homer say “uh….babies”. Then they walk out and that strangely drawn guy walks by with a dog….he kinda resembles Hitchcock.

That is Alfred Hitchcock that walks by, probably because as Homer goes thru the babies to pick up Maggie, he moves like Rod Taylor does in The Birds. 🙂
