In our silly lil game, we sometimes see things pop in that we have no clue as to their Origin. They seem familiar, but we just can’t pinpoint from where. So that is why we decided to make a fun lil reminder out of it. To let you know just Where did THAT Come From?
Hello hello friends! So EA dropped in and announced that Level 60 would be the last dedicated level with a new character and building. In true funny fashion, the building brought into our game was the Springfield Googolplex. A funny addition considering the levels beyond it don’t go on into infinity but cap at Level 939 (the area code for the Simpsons). A googolplex is “one, followed by writing zeroes until you get tired” according to Edward Kasner in 1920. Basically the largest number imaginable and just more proof of how much the writers of the Simpsons love math. I wrote a post about it once upon a time.
Anyhoo… the googolplex is just a big theater where you could go see some of the latest schlock that’s presented for the masses to consume. Most of us have a comparable theater in our neck of the woods and now TSTO does too. But where in the Best. Show. Ever. did this come from? Let’s check out the TV Series to find it.
“Colonel Homer” (S3:E20)
In July 2014, we held a contest to create a level based on an episode and this building was my top choice in my template for the contest. It’s where Marge upsets Homer while watching a “taut political thriller.” Homer ruins the ending causing Marge to yell at him propelling the plot to have Homer go to the Beer ‘N Brawl, meet Lurleen Lumpkin, become her country music manager and dress like a cowboy only to be wooed by his beautiful friend and thereby reinforce his love for the his gorgeous wife.
The theater has 28 theaters and originally was blue.
The next appearance is in “Bart’s Friend Falls in Love” (S3:E23). Bart steals Homer’s jar of pennies prompting a great homage to “Raiders of the Lost Ark.” A magic eight ball (remember those?) prognosticates the potential end to Bart and Milhouse’s friendship and courtesy of Samantha Stankey, it might be true. Oh the risks Milhouse is willing to take in an age of cooties. Meanwhile, Homer’s “gastronomic rapacity knows no satiety.” “Forbearance is the watchword. That triumvirate of Twinkies merely overwhelmed my resolve.” Basically Homer builds his vocabulary with subliminal messages he thought would help him lose weight while Bart and Milly’s relationship hits the skids. The new couple even ruin the movies for Bart. The trio watched Space Mutants VII at none other than the Googolplex.
The next appearance is many seasons later in “E-I-E-I-(Annoyed Grunt)” (S11:E5). Once again it’s shown at the beginning of the episode. This time the theater has expanded to at least 36 theaters.
In “Jaws Wired Shut” (S13:E9), the Gay Pride Parade hits Springfield and Homer decides he’d rather take his family to the movies after Santa’s Little Helper takes a particular liking to the Gay Dog Alliance. In this appearance of the Googolpex, it’s pink like our games.
I love Homer ranting about there being too many previews and being run off by the ushers with giant Kit Kat bars.
The Googolplex is still pink at the start of “The Ziff Who Came to Dinner” (S15:E14) too. Homer probably shouldn’t have taken the kids to see The ReDeadening.
Raphael aka Sarcastic Clerk was the ticket guy in this episode so it makes sense that he came with the building. My guess is the EA designers used this episode as part of their inspiration.
In “Mommie Beerest (S16:E7), Homer and Marge go to see a movie by themselves at the Googolplex. Well, sort of. Moe joins them after Marge sees him and invites him to sit down. Marge has been partnering with Moe at his new English pub that he opened after the former lackadaisical health inspector died eating one of his pickled eggs and the new guy closed him down. Homer remortgaged his home to provide the capital for the pub and Moe and Midge have become friends in the new venture, The Nag and Weasel. Marge has been spending too much time at the bar and it’s at the theater that Homer realizes he may need to work on his marriage. I’d think that too if my wife invited Moe to join us during a movie.
I like this building being added to the game obviously. The movies created for the theater make me giggle both in the show and in our games. I guess I should point out that the two movies shown on the marquee of the theatre in our towns (Sever V & The Diversity Kittens) were movies Bart went to see at the Aztec Theater in “O Brother, Where Bart Thou?” (S21:E8).

Anyhoo… so basically this is a building in the show that’s used to start off the plots of episodes. Fitting since it was basically used in TSTO to start off a new way for the game to be played. I realize this is an old subject but cleaning out my task book today, I found I have a task to watch a movie at the Googolplex. I never did back when I got the bldg. because I also thought the cost was ridiculous. But today it dawned on me that maybe that task is somehow connected to something else? I know with a lot of the quests you have to finish it ALL to move on to something else or finally acquire whatever it is (like the Homerlayas I guess). Anyway, do I have to watch a movie? I probably should but $50,000 seems a high price to pay just to get it out of my task book! 🙂

Raphael in the game appears to be called “Wise Guy”. EA changed his character name for a reason. I like the theatre anyway it’s really good fits perfectly anywhere in Springfield. ‘You took children to see The Re-Deadening?’
What was the reason?
Wise Guy is another one of his nicknames. Raphael is also known as the Sarcastic Clerk and Middle-Aged Man. One thing is for sure, sarcasm is what he’s known for.

I don’t know if there was an episode that the googleplex’s movie listings went sky high (vertically) or if that’s only an image found in the book “Map of Springfield” (I might even have that book title wrong).
Jake, it does. Which is nice. I like having them full at all times, I’ve used the Chili pot to do the same already, and have bought some expansions in SH using it, while still keeping above 200.

I wouldn’t even mind that this building earns Springfield Heights currency, if it did it at a more reasonable exchange rate. The price it charges is insane, especially when that cash can take me a considerable distance towards a free donut, if I use it for farming.
I completely agree, we should be able to convert cash and time to SH currency but the exchange rate is insane for so little reward!
Oh well haha back to the grind i guess…
I like the idea of spending cash to earn SH currency. However, I believe that the exchange rate is abusive especially for the quick to produce items like furniture and coffee. Furthermore I believe the duration of the movies or the SH currency quantities should be proportionate to the normal time required to produce the items. For those reason I do not think I will be using the googolplex.
I agree, for the most part. However, the one thing I like about it is that (I believe) it allows you to go over your limit/cap from the Springfield Heights buildings… similar to the turtle-tapping game from the Insanity Chili pot.
So does Number 1 with the lattes. 15 lattes per hour is much, MUCH better then the five you get from the Googolplex for 50.000 game cash and 3 hours.
But that task disappears once your storage is full…
That’s the down side, but it is possible to have 214 lattes ☕️ in stock and their are FREE!!!
Yeah, the time and cost are absurd.
It really is stupid. You could send all of your characters to one round of earning, ignore them for 3 hours, and end up with way more Heights currency at a tiny fraction of the cost in lost productivity.
