Totbox’s Throwback Thursday: S1 E7 The Call Of The Simpsons

It’s time for another Throwback Thursday with Totbox!  We’re back to Thursdays this week…and hopefully for a while again.  Enjoy this week’s installment, I know I did! 🙂

Howdy nature lovers,

Sometimes nature calls (in more ways than one) so, where do you go? In the woods? In the comfort of a luxurious RV? Or do you prefer staying at home? Whether you are a camper or a glamper The Great Outdoors is not only the title of a John Candy movie (in 1988) it is also a destination (assuming at the time you’re reading this there are still national forests and parks). :p

Question: How can you tell if a tree is really old? Answer: By the number rings. ANSWER THE PHONE you old saps! Please leave a message for the seventh episode of The Simpsons. 🙂
“The Call Of The Simpsons”

Homer puts his (Big)Foot in his mouth when he said: The Simpsons can handle the great outdoors (which he never said but worked with the concept of the clever synopsis)

As a time traveler I’ve seen both the power of nature and the attempts of man-kind to claim it for themselves, But one thing I haven’t seen is Big Foot with my own eyes, outside of the 1987 film “Harry and the Hendersons” and a few Beef Jerky commercials and of course February 18th 1990 when this episode of The Simpsons premiered (well, I thought it was Big Foot anyway).

FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING: Rod Flanders (he didn’t appear with Todd in Episode 1 and Todd skips out on this episode). This episode also has Binky Bear (who isn’t imaginary).

There are also characters and items that appeared for the first time that Could come into TSTO in the future maybe. OH THE POSSIBILITIES:

Some previously requested Characters:  Cowboy Bob (since he was voiced by Albert Brooks, he would unlikely be voiced in the game) but He and Cowboy Bob’s RV Roundup is still sought after.

Possible NPCs:  Bigfoot (not Homer, but a Bigfoot for our game, even though it was only a cardboard cut out in the episode), and maybe a park ranger.

Possible Decorations: Rabbit Trap Catapult (trap gone wrong), circling vultures, Flanders’ lawnmower, the Ultimate Behemoth and other RVs.

Possible Events: RV event, camping event (outside of the THOH story telling event) after all, The SuperHero Event’s “Scout Master” might be needed again.  😉  big foot mini-event (with “Half-man, Half-Ape Burgers”, “Official Bigfoot souvenirs” and “Get your photo taken with Bigfoot” stands. Maybe for fun “Homer is a Dope” T-shirt stand even though that isn’t in this episode).

Possible Skins: Camper Homer and Marge, Back to Nature Homer and Bart, Big (muddy) Foot Homer, Lucky Red Hat Bart (but with his regular clothes, and I could have saved this request for a future episode but since Homer mentioned it, I figured I should too).

Characters and Things I didn’t mention because I personally have no interest in them joining the game Don’t Mention It: Other campers, film makers, news reporters and scientists.

some Highlights:

Some other things to think about:
Maggie’s clothes seem to have changed from a pink to a lavender color (though it could have been a change of clothes from the thieving bears). This is the first episode we see that Maggie seems to have a special communion with animals. Marvin Monroe appears but doesn’t seem to remember Homer from S1 E4, which is pretty odd, maybe Dr. Monroe was so traumatized of the Simpsons’ behavior at his clinic that he Blocked it out of his memory.? The catapulted bunny has a doppelgänger (but since they breed like rabbits, it’s plausible to be a relative) since afterwards one bites Homer with other critters. Since Bart has his Lucky Red Hat in future episodes he must have gotten it back or gotten a new one. And finally, after you read all this and found yourself lost and unsatisfied that I didn’t go Wild with camping puns or jokes, I’d say “you can go take a Hike.” :p

But leave a comment before you go. Do you remember this episode? What was your favorite moment?  Any of the Possibilities that you Really do/don’t like? Are you outdoorsy (any eventful memories?)? Ever traveled in an RV? Do you do any family/sibling travel games? Do you believe in Big Foot? Have you ever made a purchase just to attempt to make your neighbors jealous? Sound off in the comments and have a great journey back to your current time space/time (and take a change of clothes with you, just in case) 😉

  1. Another moment that makes me smile (that I don’t squeeze into the collages) is when Marge and Lisa are tidying up their camp and Marge picks up a squirrel and sets it next to two others (just a simple moment, but was cute). 🙂

  2. I saw this episode the first time it aired. The funniest part for me was when Homer tried to catch the rabbit with the snare, but when the rabbit stepped into it- rather than being caught- was flung a mile into the distance. I don’t know what it was about that scene that tickled my funny bone. All I know is that I laughed until I cried. One of the greatest site gags of all time.

  3. Josephine Kick@$$

New decorations, events, & skins? LOVE what you came up with!!!

  4. Bigfoot homer skin would be awesome.

  5. It could also make use of the Tree Hugger Lisa skin for event special tasks. And make you upgrade Flander and Homer’s camping car or a campfire… And look out for bigfoot that could pop out once a day for you to catch and give you extra currency (firewood?). And the Ultimate Behemoth will probably be a Gil deal if such an event hits.

Yep, the ideas are there, but as this isn’t that much (unless fused with other outdoor items and characters), I guess it would be more like a mini event.

  6. Big foot Homer could be a (maybe 24 hour) task for Back To Nature Homer so we could have both for the price of one.

    • I love that idea. personally I would rather have “back to nature” Homer skin over “muddy big foot” skin, so the idea of just being a visual task sounds like a good compromise. 🙂

  7. Just curious why this post was tagged “tips and tricks?”

    • That is an answer for Alissa to give. My guess is that they are Tips for EA and a trick for the reader :p. She probably meant to link it to “Behind the Game” instead.

      • It’s a standard tag that she uses that has more to do with SEO than anything.

        • Yeah. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE the flashbacks. 🙂 I remember these episodes like they were yesterday. But when I’m searching for “tips and tricks” tagged articles, and EVERYTHING, including stuff that has no real in-game value, shows up…it’s not very efficient.

  8. I love these posts Tot. Always look forward to them, maybe because I get to be a reader for once. I do believe in Bigfoot but that’s because my scoutmaster always told us the story of when he encountered one. See what I did there? The best part is it’s a tie-in to your post and actually true. Keep the goodness coming.

  9. That rabbit being launched is my absolute favorite moment on the entire series.

  10. Now I want a town full of bunnies.

  11. Great episode. I could have had an Albert Brooks conference alone in the Bracket Battle, but unfortunately RV Bob (which I believe is his first appearance on the show) is not even in my top 5 Albert Brooks voiced characters.
    1) Hank Scorpio
    2) Jacques
    3) Russ Cargill
    4) Brad Goodman
    5) Albert Brooks (as himself)

Also didn’t remember that Rod and Todd debuted individually each. Need to dust off my season 1 box set.

Another home run Tot. Look forward to next Thursday!

    • It would be great if some celebrities voices get added to the game and would love a Highlighted Voice Actor event (like all of Al Brooks’ characters storyline intermingled with each other)

Oddly your #4 is my favorite (maybe because He’s the only one I have a Toy version of… But I think I might have rewatch that episode to explain the appeal better 🙂

Stay tuned for future Throwbacks, I will shout out when Rodd and Tod appear together for the first time. 🙂

    • My fav is Tab Spangler–the fat camp guy(had no idea what his name was!) The best part is the dialogue between him and Homer over the end credits–I don’t want the meat. I do want the meat!

  12. I would love Bob and the RV Roundup in the game. I bought the Tailgate mostly because it has an RV in it. 🙂

    • When the EA Desert teaser hit they mentioned Duels and imidiatley I thought of the (Glove Slap)Southern Gentleman and then remembered he had an RV and thought it might be an RV event (with Desert 😛 ) but nope Wild West event (disappointing). Lucky Chili-cook-off Minievent made up for it. But yes, I’d still like to see RVs.

Also since I’m feeling chatty, I like this original look to Cowboy Bob over thier smaller ear reboot of the character (I guess we like the classics) 🙂
