Where Did THAT Come From – Around the World Act 1 & 2 Housekeeping

In our silly lil game, we sometimes see things pop in that we have no clue as to their Origin. They seem familiar, but we just can’t pinpoint from where. So that is why we decided to make a fun lil reminder out of it. To let you know just Where Did THAT Come From?

So EA decided it’s time for all of us to go around the world or at least to France, Japan, and Brazil in a there’s lots of new stuff for Springfield tourism sort of way that also included a legitimate airport. This walking carpet is super stoked so far. Of course, with new events and a preponderance of items comes my perpetual task of diving into the Best. Show. Ever. and pointing out just where everything comes from in the show. A few of the items so far don’t come from the Simpsons Go to X episodes which inspired the individual acts so I figured I’d point out different items from other episodes just for fun. For this round of origins, we’ll be looking at the Chocolate Chapel, Pont du Gard, the French Fountain, Sailor Kumiko, and the leather plane.

Chocolate Chapel – “Burns Verkaufen der Kraftwerk” (S3:E11)

I wrote a whole WDTCF about items from the Land of Chocolate back in December 2015 when we got a bunch for the Christmas event. Now they’ve added one more item that’s really just seen in the background of Homer excitedly traversing this wonderful land of edible fantasy. It’s certainly a cool chocolaty addition.

Pont du Gard – “The Italian Bob” (S17:E8)

Burns is taunted by the Springfield Elementary kids for his old-timey car aka “a Dodge Scare-avan” prompting him to get a new one. While I still think Martin’s Oldsmobile joke was hilarious, Burn opts for the Lamborgotti Fasterossa but it has to be picked up from Italy itself. What do you do when you need a car picked up but send your most “competent” employee… none other than Homer Jay Simpson. It’s the car Homer thinks about when he makes love to his wife. This episode finds our favorite yellow familia touristing Italy and encountering Bob Terwilleger and clan but this little appearance isn’t about that. You can read more about the episode here and here. What does show up is the inspiration for Pont du Gard.

One of the places we see Homer at while driving through Italy in Burns’ luxury sports car is a Roman Aqueduct. Lisa exclaims about her dad driving on the historical landmark. “What am I supposed to use it for—transporting water to distant urban centers?! Wowza… sometimes Homer’s knowledge of the world is surprising and hilarious. Clearly this looks more like Pont du Gard then any of the aqueducts I’m studying in my Roman History class. I suppose it could be the Aqua Alexandrina or the Aqueduct of the Forum if you pretend either is still intact enough to be driven on in the Simpsons universe.

French Fountain – “Yellow Subterfuge” (S25:E7) & “Clown in the Dumps” (S26:E1)

So I’m  watching all the French episodes and trying to find the craftable fountain and I can’t find anything resembling this. It irked me that I knew I’d seen this item somewhere with its unmistakable dolphins spitting out water. Then it finally hit me where something similar was as I was considering newer episodes for a different post. While not quite as big as the version in the game, Krusty has a really similar fountain in front of his mansion. Maybe this was the inspiration? Sailor Kumiko – “Married to the Blob” (S25:E10)

This is the Comic Book Guy finally finds a lady to compliment his life in what one can only hope is a romance destined for the ages episode. You can read a full recap of the episode here, but suffice to say Kumiko compliments Jeffrey Albertson pretty well especially considering their Super Happy Love Montage. In one of the manga pages, we see the couple cosplaying together at Bi-Mon-Sci-Fi-Con. This is the quick blip which inspired the Sailor Kumiko skin. I think her quick changing through CBG’s Stargate into Harry Potter clothes would be a righteous skin for future events also. You know some of you Pott(er)heads agree.

Leather Airplane – “The Great Phatsby” (S28:E12/13)

Patric did a great review of this episode but alas, any review can’t cover everything. I know I did a recording of my thoughts and didn’t even mention Jay G’s many aeroplanes. “Each of my enterprises has its own G6” (Like a G 6, like a G 6, Now I’m feelin’ so fly like a G 6). One of them is completely covered in leather. I know reading the physical (this is said tongue in cheek since I know the intangibility of pixellated ownership) Uncle Norbert prize gives away this origin but I figured folks wouldn’t mind seeing an image from the episode.
