Super Safi’s Monday Morning Musings 06 – Lisa’s Blues

Morning Musically-Minded, Medically-Minded, Masticators!

(Today’s post is sponsored by the letter “M”)

Over the past 600+ episodes, The Simpsons has taken us on an amazing journey involving music, science, and food to name a few concepts.

And what better way to start your week, then by discussing some of these concepts Monday morning?

So let’s get started this week by recapping some lyrics from the sixth episode of The Simpsons, featuring jazz by Lisa Simpson and winner of the first ever Bracket Battle Bleeding Gums Murphy.

In the sixth episode of The Simpsons, Moaning Lisa (Season 01, Episode 06), Lisa develops the blues, which is noticeable to the people around her. She has a note sent home from Springfield Elementary, but Marge and Homer are unable to cheer her up. That night, she hears jazz music in the distance, and sneaks out to follow it, to discover that it is being played by Bleeding Gums Murphy. He teaches her how to express her sadness on the saxophone, and she is happy again.

During their first encounter, we get to hear an awesome blues song in which Lisa expresses her feelings:

Lisa’s Blues

I got this bratty brother.

He bugs me everyday.

And this morning, my own mother.

Gave my last cupcake away.

My dad acts like he belongs,

he belongs in a zoo.

I’m the saddest kid in grade number two.”

Now that we’ve strolled down memory lane to review Lisa’s blues, be sure to come back next week when we continue our Monday morning musings with the next episode of The Simpsons.

  1. “Those were the days”, including the line “For no reason, Here’s Apu!”

  2. I’m going to bring up a favourite – 1997’s Songs In The Key of Springfield CD, because it’s loaded with precious music from great Simpson’s Episodes such as

    “We Do (The Stonecutters’ Song)”

    https://youtu.be/QoSLiHKrzRU

    “Señor Burns”

    https://youtu.be/p9kdDet7G14

    “The Monorail Song”

    https://youtu.be/ZDOI0cq6GZM

But there’s also the 2007 Compilation The Simpsons: Testify with

    “Everybody Hates Ned Flanders” (Medley)

    https://youtu.be/ra9WRfqRpOs

“We Put the Spring in Springfield” (which comes from a favourite Season 8 Episode called “Bart After Dark”)

While you said Blues Songs, therefore I must endorse The Simpsons Sing the Blues released in 1990 (not necessarily involving Bleeding Gums Murphy, but fun music to admire)

    “Springfield Soul Stew”

    “Born Under A Bad Sign”

  3. Tough to name a favourite top song but a few favourites are see my vest, the monorail song, and canyonero and we do. After the classic era there are barely any episodes with songs in although I do love despite not knowing the names of the songs the song from the episode with flight of the conchords and the song with homer and Kirk bromance that homer hates and Kirk loves.

  4. Favorite song that immediately leaps to mind is Burns’ ‘See My Vest’ not surprising since I LOVE Beauty and the Beast and Cruella De Ville. That was followed closely by The Monorail Song and We Put the Spring in Springfield. Looking at my special limited collectors edition CD box set of Go Simpsonic and songs in the key of springfield, I’m going to add Your Wife Don’t Understand You sung by Lurleen, Baby on Board by the B-Sharps and the jingles for Canyonero, Mr. Plow and the Plow King. Now I’m going to go listen to my CD’s so I can add some more.
There have been some great songs in more recent episodes that we laughed ourselves silly at, too bad I can’t remember what they are.

    I saw that episode too!

My favorite Simpsons song would be the one featuring the line “Grizzly Bear, underwear”. That always makes me laugh.

Perhaps favorite simpsons song is the topic for your next bracket? March madness is just around the corner, so the timing is right.
