Super Safi’s Monday Morning Musings 10 – Squid platter anyone?

Morning Musically-Minded, Medically-Minded, Masticators!

(Today’s post is sponsored by the letter “M”)

Over the past 600+ episodes, The Simpsons has taken us on an amazing journey involving music, science, and food to name a few concepts.

And what better way to start your week, then by discussing some of these concepts Monday morning?

So let’s get started this week by discussing another recipe from the tenth episode of The Simpsons, squid platter.

In the tenth episode of The Simpsons, Homer’s Night Out (Season 01, Episode 10), Bart purchases a spy camera from a catalogue and eagerly awaits its arrival. Upon its arrival, it just so happens that Homer is invited to a co-workers stag party. Much to Homer’s future chagrin, Marge takes the kids out to the same seafood restaurant, the Rusty Barnacle.

But before Bart can ruin Homer’s life with an ill-timed spy cam picture, Bart briefly ruins his own life by placing an order that he would come to regret – Squid Platter!

But have you ever wondered how you make a squid platter?

While there are many different dishes you can make using squid as the primary ingredient, I’ve selected a recipe I’m sure you’ll enjoy. From the Food Network Canada, here is a recipe for “Flash Fried Squid”:

Ingredients:

  • 3 Tbsp vegetable oil
  • 8 squid tubes, cleaned, dried and cut into quarter inch rings
  • 2 drops sesame oil
  • Few dashes hot sauce
  • Few shakes soy sauce
  • 1 lime, juiced
  • ¼ cup cilantro, chopped

Recipe:

1. Heat a large, heavy skillet over high heat then add oil.

2. When it’s searing hot, add squid tubes and sauté quickly until the edges just start to curl up, about 2 minutes.

3. Turn the heat off and add the sesame oil, hot sauce, soy sauce, lime juice and cilantro and toss well.

4. Serve immediately.

Now that we know how to make a squid platter, be sure to come back next week when we continue our Monday morning musings with the next episode of The Simpsons.
