Super Safi’s Monday Morning Musings 11 – Albania

Morning Musically-Minded, Medically-Minded, Masticators!

(Today’s post is sponsored by the letter “M”)

Over the past 600+ episodes, The Simpsons has taken us on an amazing journey involving music, science, and food to name a few concepts.

And what better way to start your week, then by discussing some of these concepts Monday morning?

So let’s get started this week by taking a tour to a country that plays a role in the eleventh episode of our favourite family The Simpsons, Albania.

In the eleventh episode of The Simpsons, The Crepes of Wrath (Season 01, Episode 11), when Bart flushes a cherry bomb down the toilet, Principal Skinner suggests he should partake in a foreign exchange student scheme. Bart is sent to France, working for criminals that spike wine with antifreeze. Meanwhile, back in Springfield, Adil Hoxha, an Albanian boy, is exchanged to the Simpsons. Much to Homer’s delight, Adil takes a lot of interest in Homer’s work. But in reality, Adil is showing an interest in the power plant to send information back to the Albanian government.

While I’ve had the pleasure of traveling to 49 countries, I have not had the opportunity to go to Albania. But I’ve always wanted to know a little bit more. So here’s some info on Albania:

Albania

The Republic of Albania is located in southeast Europe, bordering the Adriatic and Ionian Sea. It’s capital is Tirana, a city that is home to almost 800 thousand of the countries 2.8 million citizens. The country is the 140th largest in terms of surface area at 28,748 km2 (11,100 square miles). Their official language is Albanian and official currency is the Lek.

The overall life expectancy at birth is 78.5 years; 75.8 years for males and 81.4 years for females. The country’s total fertility rate of 1.51 children born per woman is one of the lowest in the world.

Albania is a secular state without an official religion. As per the 2011 census, 58.79% of the population is Muslim, 10.03% are Catholic Christian, 6.75% are Othodox Christian, and 2.5% are Atheist; with 13.79% preferring not to answer.

The flag of Albania is a red flag with a black double-headed eagle in the centre. The red colour symbolizes the bravery, strength and valour of the Albanian people and the black colour appears as a symbol of freedom and heroism.

Important cultural symbols include the colours red and black, animals such as the golden eagle living across the country, costumes such as the fustanella, plis and opinga which are worn to special events and celebrations, plants such as the olive and red poppy that grow across the country.

With a coastline along the Adriatic and Ionian in the Mediterranean Sea, fish, crustaceans, and seafood are a popular and an integral part of the Albanian diet. Otherwise, lamb is the traditional meat for different holidays and religious festivals for both Christians and Muslims.

Popular sports in Albania include Football (aka Soccer), Weightlifting, Basketball, Volleyball, Tennis, Swimming, Rugby, and Gymnastics.

Albania has competed at the 1972 (5 athletes), 1992 (7 athletes), 1996 (7 athletes), 2000 (4 athletes), 2004 (7 athletes), 2008 (11 athletes), 2012 (11 athletes), and 2016 (6 athletes) Summer Olympics; as well as the 2006 (1 athlete), 2010 (1 athlete), 2014 (2 athletes), and 2018 (2 athletes) Winter Olympics. They have never won an Olympic medal at either the Summer or Winter games.

Notable American personalities with Albanian roots include actress Eliza Dushku and actor brothers John and Jim Belushi.

Now that we’ve learned more about the native country of one of our favourite Simpsons spies, be sure to come back next week when we continue our Monday morning musings with the next episode of The Simpsons.

What’s your favourite Simpsons country connection? What about your favourite Simpsons travel episode? Have you ever been to Albania? Sound off in the comments below. You know we love hearing from you.

Best Simpsons Travel episode is to Australia.
Every Aussie Simpsons fan LOVES this episode and we constantly quote it in the terrible imitation Australian accent used.
We like to pay for stuff in Dollarey-Doos, and comment often that: “I would have called it a Chuz-Wozzer”
If something isn’t to our liking “I’m gunna take this straight to the Prime Minister… Andy… ANDY.!!” only to be told to relax because “It’s just a kick up the bum…”
In a very Simpsons-like move, the nickname for our current Prime Minister is ‘Scotty from Marketing’
Love TSTO Addicts. You guys are doing a great job.

  2. Enver Hoxha FTW

  5. Very interesting… loved this post, man..

  6. Crepes of Wrath is my favourite episode ever of the Simpsons. Admittedly I haven’t seen all of them but that is the best from start to finish. The episode in Australia is my 2nd favourite.

I hope tomorrow we see some small little update for St. Paddy’s Day. I want my missing leprechauns for my Springfield.

  7. One of my favourite episodes, love that the French cops were more concerned about antifreeze in the wine than child slavery!

    Interesting article Safi

  8. My sister is having problems with Mabel task 3 as she never got Virgil from stage 4 of the event and the task is waiting for him to become available. Please advise.

    Thanks!

  9. Fav spy? Max Power!

  10. Thanx Safi.

Just out of curiosity, you mention Adil as one of our favorite Simpson’s spies. Can you remind me who some of the others are?

I have a co worker who is from Albania. When I get a chance I ask her about it. Very fascinating history!
