Should You Buy Wilbur Nurple?

Hey Howdy Hey Tappers!

Spending actual cash on donuts for a character is back in TSTO.  This is something EA’s been rolling out over the last few years, and it’s a new bonus for actually spending cash on donuts. (instead of just farming them)  Where they attach a premium, limited-time, character to one of the donut bundles sometimes in addition to bonus donuts.

And I want to be perfectly clear…you do not need to buy these characters to complete an event.  You can still play this game, and complete all the tasks and prizes, 100% free.  These cash-for-character items are a new type of premium currency…because donuts have been so devalued with donut farming.

This time around we’re being offered Wilbur Nurple,  a premium character, for a tray of 132 Donuts ($9.99 in the US)..no bonus this time around.  While it’s hard for me to sit here and tell you if you should or shouldn’t spend actual cash on the game (spoiler, I think you should always spend at least a small amount…even if it’s $.99/year on the game if it brings you joy and you want to see it continue) I thought I’d do a quick breakdown of Wilbur, tasks, questline and other details you may be curious about.

So let’s consider this an abbreviated Should I Buy….

So what is the deal?  When you can find it in the Currency Tab of your Store (also by hitting Get More)…

Basically, spend $9.99 on a Tray of 132 donuts and you get the Wilbur character.

And yes, for those outside of the US I know my price is probably lower than yours.  EA only charges 9.99 USD for this package…anything over that that you are currently paying goes to Google/Apple/Amazon for Tax and Duty etc.  EA only collects the 9.99.

And again, I’m glad EA went back to the $9.99 price point for these (the last one was $19.99), and happy it’s a full character.

So here’s a breakdown on Wilbur Nurple…

-Full character
-Not Voiced
-Comes with a complete set of tasks
-Comes with a questline
-Some fun visual/animated tasks
-EARNS Event Currency, the first cash character I can recall that does this…
-From a “The Winter of His Content” S25, E14

Here’s a look at the task list

Wilbur’s Permanent Tasks…

And here’s the full dialogue version of the questline:

Bart: Uh, yeah. Hey! I heard you killed Chester with a slingshot and then got outsmarted by a couple of elementary school kids and then got punched by an old man and ran away crying.
Wilbur Nurple: What? Who told you that?! Was it Steve? You can’t believe anything that guy says. And if you repeat any of those definitely-not-true things to anyone, then I’ll see you in court.
Bart: I’m already on air saying them! Also, aren’t you like forty? You have nothing better to do than threaten kids on public access radio?
Wilbur Nurple: I’m thirty-eight. And no, I do not. Actually, now I do. To all my listeners, I’ll be on the streets tonight, looking for this punk kid caller. I don’t know who you are or where you live, but I’ll be out there…coming for you… And we’ll be right back after these important bully messages.
Make Wilbur Nurple Prowl the Town- 1hr
Make Bart Follow Wilbur Nurple- 4hrs

The Bully Pulpit Pt. 3
Wilbur starts

Wilbur Nurple: Caller, you’re on KBLY’s The Bully Pulpit. What’s on your mind tonight?
Wiggum: Uh, yeah this is Chief Wiggum. I heard that you were bullying little kids on your show.
Wilbur Nurple: Yeah, that’s right. And what are you gonna do about it, loser?
Wiggum: Hey, man, I just wanted to give you some tips. I’ve got a lot of experience with these punks.

The Bully Pulpit Pt. 4
Wilbur starts

Wilbur Nurple: Thanks for calling in caller. The Bully Pulpit is yours, go ahead.
Nelson: Wow, I can’t believe I’m actually on the air. I’ve been calling in for years but never got past your screener!
Wilbur Nurple: Yes, Kevin is very discerning. We get a lot of nutjobs calling in, ya know?
Nelson: Well, I’m a longtime listener, first time caller. What I wanted to ask was: can I join your bully gang?
Wilbur Nurple: Ah, so you think you’re Purple Nurple material, do you?
Nelson: Yes, sir. I’ve got my own gang, but they’re a bunch of elementary school amateurs. I’m ready to take the leap to professional bullying.
Wilbur Nurple: Oh one second, it looks like Kevin is putting through a second caller. Caller, you’re on the air.
Jimbo: Uh, yeah. I just wanted to let you know that your other caller is a JERK and a total dweeb and you shouldn’t let him into your gang.
Wilbur Nurple: Oh, folks it sounds like there’s trouble in paradise tonight.
Nelson: Pfft. Paradise? You call the Stolen Bicycle Graveyard paradise? Jimbo, I think we should take a break and start seeing other gangs.
Jimbo:  *gasp* You can’t break up with me. I break up with you! I said it first!
Wilbur Nurple: Well, just as it was getting juicy here on KBLY, we’re out of time. Tune in tomorrow night to hear the finale of this bullies’ quarrel. And don’t forget to watch me live on the street for another episode of “Bully on the Street”. Swing by for a free wedgie and a “KICK ME” post-it note autograph.
Make Wilbur Nurple Record “Bully on the Street”- 4hrs

That’s pretty much it on Wilbur. Actually a pretty fun character, one of the better cash-for-character items I’ve seen in recent memory.  I’ll very likely be picking him up today.

What are your thoughts on Wilbur?  Have you made the purchase?  Will you be making the purchase? Thoughts on the questline and tasks?  Sound off below you know we love hearing from you!

  1. I tried to buy this item using Amazon Coins and it said it was successful. Then, as it was restarting the game, it failed. When I restarted the game, the offer was back in the store but the Amazon Coins had been deducted from my account. After contacted Amazon support and getting a refund, I was advised to try it again. Guess what? It happened again. After another chat with Amazon and another refund, I give up. EA can keep its character and this event is officially less fun now.

    • Did you try looking for Wilber Nurple in you storage under characters?
That’s where I found mine. Alissa pointed it out.

  2. I purchased this. Got the donuts but not the character. Suggestions?

  3. Any one else get the glitch where you purchased the bonus event character you get it then it is available again from the store. I noticed the same thing last event that had a bonus payed character. I still have the bonus character but it is being offered again in the store, with the 300 donuts.

  4. Thanks for the breakdown, I always go with your recommendations and agree regarding donuts, I don’t need to buy, but a little support goes a long way. I’ll be picking him up too

  5. Not sending EA any more money until they stop forcing me to download 1G updates if I’m not logged in for 3 hours. The download takes at least 11 minutes, and 4 or 5 times a day…. I have no time to be locked out of my phone for nearly an hour a day.

    • That’s not EA’s fault…well not directly. You need to free up space on your device. You need A LOT of free space on your device for TSTO, otherwise it continually re-downloads. I recommend at least 15GB free. Also, try clearing your phone’s cache, that helps too.

  6. Oops sorry I think I sent my post twice

  7. I should have spell checked!! Lol 😂

  8. I have zero problem spending real money on this game! I have played for years now spent.. well if you ask my husband more then I should have! Lol I even though I do donut farm I still send a few bucks EA’s why now and again as it goes cost money to keep this game going!! I know everyone likes and wants things for free but let’s face it as adults we know someone gets and needs a pay check for keeping this game running still! CJBrownLV your spot on! Free to download no advertisement!! and no need to spend in order to play!! I guess my point is people always complain when the idea of having to spend real cash comes up!! You don’t have to it’s a choice! Anyway glad they brought the character done to the tray of donuts but this one is a pass for me only because I really have no interest in the character. Happy Day Friends and Happy Tappin! 🍩🍩🍩🍩

  9. I like this deal and picked it up. Yes, it’s a one off character, but then again, any character we get these days is going to be. I view it is very important to occasionally spend real money to support to this game, and the fact that this character helps earn event currency seals the deal for me. I’m not going to spend real money on characters in every event, but a few times a year isn’t a bad thing at all.

  10. While I appreciate The Warriors reference in Wilbur’s 1hr task, a single character is easily lost now in this game. I ponied up dough for tokens for the Gold Box on Black Friday and I’m pretty sure again at Christmas but got LOTS of characters that completed sets, questlines, skins and buildings. A much better value and did my part to support the game.
Maybe Wilbur will come back in a mystery box like Sven Golly did, for now I think I’ll pass. I’ll just have to be happy with Spiro, Wolfguy, Pita, Peta and the Ruffian npc’s for this mini update.

    • SB GIBBS

Your strategy was spot on ….Black Friday Mystery Boxes tend to have numerous prior Content that Tappers are looking for. If a Tapper manages to spend $5 – $10 a year in this Game App – and do that every year for 9 years? that’s $45 – $90 you’ve given to EA. 🤔

    • For those folks who don’t already have still that stuff, I agree with you….but it’s been a long time since I’ve even had a mystery box, since I tend to already have the stuff that’s in them. (And, the rare times I don’t, it’s because I didn’t want whatever it was to begin with.) The last time I had a mystery box was the time I actually paid to get tokens so I could get both of the donut-generating buildings….not that I really needed those buildings for the donuts (I haven’t even had to farm for at least a couple of years now, because my bonus multiplier is high enough to get me plenty of donuts just through tasks and buildings), but because I liked those buildings in their own right (and it is a little fun that they generate donuts, I won’t lie….same reason I have Yahweh permanently earning six donuts per day). It was a good excuse to put a little money into the game, but, unfortunately, $9.99 is more than a “a little money” for me these days, so it’s a no go for these characters that have required spending that much to get them.

      • That’s right, it was a second prize track at Christmas, how quickly I forget. I bought up to Cost-Mo but stopped short of $50 for Catfish Lake despite really wanting it. It was enough tokens to clean out the Winter Wonderland box and donut conversion left over. I was a convert from Premium to Farmium when they released God for 777 donuts and I tried bloodmobiling for the first time. So soooper EAzy. I don’t stock up a lot, just enough to get whatever I want per update. If I get a mystery box it’s usually pretty anemic too, but I can be surprised now and again. Like now, I didn’t put much effort into The Outlands event at the time so I’m still picking up returning content.

  11. Let’s face it, virtually every game now requires at least occasional monetary input (anybody ever play Family Guy…?) or, at the very, very least watching endless, repetitive videos . For a game as big as TSTO that allows you to get to a point where you really DON”T need to spend money, a little money every so often to make it worth EAs while to keep our silly lil game going is worth the price of admission in my book. AND we get a full character – albeit a fairly obscure one – and some sprinkles in the deal. Sign me up so we can all keep signing in!

    • Dan Mares

This is the only Mobile Game App I know that is
      _free to download
      _no in game advertisements
      _zero hidden fees

TSTO is still light years better than Family Guy and Futurama (939 Levels – I don’t think any City Building Game App can top that!)😀👍🏻

  12. Te
He best way to compare value is trying to compare money to real things

For example, how many BigMacs you can buy with $9,99 and how many with £7,17
    ?

Here (Brazil) This chat costs BRL 56,00
With this money I can buy 7 BigMacs

    • It depends on what the value is to you. To me I’d rather have a character in TSTO that i can enjoy for a lot longer than 7 big macs. 😉

    • It’s 8 cans of beer that’ll last me a couple of nights, or the bits I want from Lego to add to things I’ll have for ages, or if I’m really clever it’s a couple of plants for the garden that my Mrs will enjoy for a long time and will get me a load of brownie points 🙂
      ( or even 0.5% of a holiday 🙂 )

  13. I spent on Libido and regret it. Would rather have this one, but can’t trade, and can’t spend $10 again yet.

  14. Picked up Libido during the last event so that was my Tapped Out contribution for a while. Trying to send a one-person message to EA that $9.99 is too much for a character. It really helps that I have no idea who Wilbur is.

  15. This one is a LOT better than that super creepy Lisa-esque one they did for Valentine’s Day, but I think that it’s kind of crazy to use a non-voiced character for something people actually have to spend real money to buy.

  16. $9.99 is £7.17 right now.
    Apply 20% VAT ( our sales tax, if that’s required ) and it’s £8.60.
Or just swap $ for £ and we pay almost 40% extra, while Google finds ways to pay as little tax on that as possible.
The only thing, is it laziness or greed, or a bit of both ?!?
    ( I tried to bite my tongue, I really did – but . . . Aaaaaaggghhh !! 🙂 )

    • Oh you can blame Google all you want lol I just said that so people don’t blame EA. They only get the 9.99 USD

      • The last cash bundle I got was for my second town that I run on a Kindle, and Amazon adjusted the price according to a slightly inflated exchange rate. So far so good, but it seems they decided that was a mistake and now they want their $13.90 too !!
You’re right about one thing though, it’s only right to chip in now and again because once the money disappears the game will soon follow.

  17. TallSpiderCandy

This is a decent price since full character PLUS earns currency, which is awesome!! Thanks EA!! 🙂 And thank you Alissa and Safi for all the incredible work you do!! Very much appreciated!! 🥰

  18. Wilbur Nurple – while I can thank EA for lowering the price to $9.99 and choosing a Character vs a Character Skin? I passed on this, because the Premium Character Combo was all I wanted (and that’s a Voiced Character!) 🤔

For the record, I’ve spent enough real 💵 on TSTO that it would add up to purchasing three to four top notch video games for a PC, or a Console (not a penny more ’til Network and Land issues are dealt with). Those in need of immediate 🍩’s can take advantage of that bargain, because there’s plenty of Content you will spend Sprinkles on.
