Should You Buy McGriff the Crime Dog?

Hey Howdy Hey Tappers!

Spending actual cash on donuts for a character is back in TSTO.  This is something EA’s been rolling out over the last few years, and it’s a new bonus for actually spending cash on donuts. (instead of just farming them)  Where they attach a premium, limited-time, character/costume/building/decoration/combo to one of the donut bundles sometimes in addition to bonus donuts.

And I want to be perfectly clear…you do not need to buy these characters to complete an event.  You can still play this game, and complete all the tasks and prizes, 100% free.  These cash-for-character items are a new type of premium currency…because donuts have been so devalued with donut farming.

This time around we’re being offered McGriff the Crime Dog,  a premium character, for a tray of 132 Donuts ($9.99 in the US)..no bonus this time.  While it’s hard for me to sit here and tell you if you should or shouldn’t spend actual cash on the game (spoiler, I think you should always spend at least a small amount…even if it’s $.99/year on the game if it brings you joy and you want to see it continue) I thought I’d do a quick breakdown of McGriff the Crime Dog, his tasks, questline and other details you may be curious about.

So let’s consider this an abbreviated Should I Buy….

So what is the deal?  When you can find it in the Currency Tab of your Store (also by hitting Get More)…

Basically, spend $9.99 on a Tray of 132 donuts and you get McGriff the Crime Dog

And yes, for those outside of the US I know my price is probably lower than yours.  EA only charges 9.99 USD for this package…anything over that that you are currently paying goes to Google/Apple/Amazon for Tax and Duty etc.  EA only collects the 9.99.

Again, glad to see the character at the $9.99 price point.

So here’s a breakdown on this one…

-Full character
-Not Voiced
-Comes with a complete set of tasks
-Comes with a questline
-Some really fun visual/animated tasks

Here’s a look at the task list

McGriff the Crime Dog’s Permanent Tasks…

And here’s the full dialogue version of the questline:

Grampa:  My teeth are missing.
McGriff The Crime Dog: Your teeth are in your mouth.
Grampa:  These here are my chompin’ teeth. It’s my croonin’ teeth what’s went missing! *sings*
McGriff The Crime Dog: Wow, you sound horrible!
Grampa:  That’s my point. Ya can’t croon with a set of chompers!
McGriff The Crime Dog: No, of course not. I’ll, uh…I’ll get right on it.

Taking a Bite Out of Crime Pt. 3
McGriff starts

McGriff The Crime Dog: I’ve got two eyewitnesses put you sneaking around the retirement home yesterday.
Nelson: That’s where I meet my dealer.
McGriff The Crime Dog: Your dealer? Stay offa drugs, kid. They’ll rot your brain.
Nelson: I don’t do drugs. My dealer is the guy who deals cards for my underground gambling ring at school.
McGriff The Crime Dog: Sorry. Carry on, then. Wait, no…that other thing is bad too.
Make McGriff the Crime Dog Investigate Further- 4hrs
Nelson: Don’t do drugs. Don’t run an illegal gambling ring at the elementary school. All my illegal freedoms are being taken away. What’s next — no beating up kids and stealing their lunch money?
McGriff The Crime Dog: You’re testing me, aren’t you?

Taking a Bite Out of Crime Pt. 4
McGriff starts

Nelson: Look, I’m trying to run a legitimate bullying business here and you’re cramping my style. So, tell ya what… I’ll take you to Old Man Simpson’s missing teeth. But then you get lost without telling anybody I was working with the po pos.
McGriff The Crime Dog: Sounds like a deal. Then I can take on a real case. So, lead the way to those croonin’ teeth.
Nelson: Croonin’ teeth? I don’t know where those are. I was talking about his dancin’ teeth. I heard they boot-scoot-boogied last week.
McGriff The Crime Dog: How many sets of teeth does this guy have?
Make McGriff the Crime Dog Question Grampa Further- 4hrs
McGriff The Crime Dog: Alright, let’s get everything on the table.
Grampa:  *spits out teeth*
McGriff The Crime Dog: Where did those come from?
Grampa:  When it comes to dentures, I’m like a Pez dispenser.
McGriff The Crime Dog: *sigh* You know what, you sign this form saying your case has been resolved, and I’ll buy you a new set of crooning teeth.
Grampa:  Hot diggity! Get ready ladies, Abe Simpson is hittin’ high C tonight!

That’s pretty much it on McGriff the Crime Dog. A fun pickup and in my opinion, worth the $9.99.

What are your thoughts on McGriff?  Have you made the purchase?  Will you be making the purchase? Thoughts on the questline and tasks?  Sound off below you know we love hearing from you!

  1. “And yes, for those outside of the US I know my price is probably lower than yours. EA only charges 9.99 USD for this package…anything over that that you are currently paying goes to Google/Apple/Amazon for Tax and Duty etc. EA only collects the 9.99.”

    WRONG!

EA does not collect anything directly from you as an app user/player. Google/Apple/Amazon collect the $9.99 from you, they keep their portion and pay EA the remaining balance.

So EA only receives a portion of the $9.99, in some cases 60% ($5.99). Google/Apple/Amazon are providing a service and they charge for it.

Outside the US, the price is dependent on the exchange rate between the country’s currency and US dollars. There is also an additional margin that is agreed to between EA and Google/Apple/Amazon. The price is set so that it does not get effected by the daily variations in the exchange rates and it’s usually ending at ‘.99’.

For example the exchange rate between AU and US is currently at 1.4725 ($1 USD = $1.4725 AUD) so the $9.99 US price is $14.71 AU. The actual charge in the Apple store is $14.99 which covers the exchange rate variation.
