Morning Musically-Minded, Medically-Minded, Masticators!
(Today’s post is sponsored by the letter “M”)
Over the past 600+ episodes, The Simpsons has taken us on an amazing journey involving music, science, and food to name a few concepts.
And what better way to start your week, than by discussing some of these concepts Monday morning?
So let’s get started this week by talking about a female goaltending trailblazer.
In the one hundredth and eleventh episode of The Simpsons, Lisa on Ice (Season 06, Episode 08), Lisa is shocked to learn she is failing gym. In order to pass, she has to join a pee wee sports league.
While accompanying Bart to his boys hockey game, Lisa is discovered by Apu for her quick reflexes.
Lisa is the replacement for Milhouse as Apu’s new goalie. While a little scared at first as a girl playing with boys, Lisa quickly develops the eye of the tiger. She is fierce and quickly leads her team up the standings.
But things at home get rivalrous as Bart and Lisa’s performances drive a wedge between them. Ultimately the two face off in a crucial game, where Homer wants them to fight for their parents’ love.
But have you ever wondered if Lisa is the first female goaltender to play with the boys?
Manon Rhéaume
Manon Rhéaume was born on February 24, 1972 in Beauport, Québec, Canada. She is a former ice hockey goaltender who achieved a number of historic firsts during her career, including becoming the first woman to play in any of the major North American pro-sports leagues.
Manon Rhéaume (February 24, 1972 – Present)
In 1992, Manon signed a contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning of the NHL, appearing in preseason exhibition games in 1992 and 1993. She spent five years in professional minor leagues, playing for a total of seven teams and appearing in 24 games. She also played on the Canada women’s national ice hockey team, winning gold medals at the IIHF Women’s World Championship in 1992 and 1994, and the silver medal at the 1998 Winter Olympics.
Now that we’ve learned more about Manon Rhéaume, be sure to come back next week when we continue our Monday morning musings with the next episode of The Simpsons.

Classic
Homer: Oh my God, Marge. A penalty shot with only four seconds left. It’s your child versus mine! The winner will be showered with praise; the loser will be taunted and booed until my throat is sore!
So many hilarious quotes in this one.
