Super Safi’s Tappers Thursday Therapy Time – Five Stages of Grief, Stage 4 Depression

Tidings Triste Tappers!

(Today’s post is sponsored by the letter “T”)

Over the past 12 years, The Simpsons Tapped Out has taken us on an amazing journey. But now that journey is coming to an end.

Or put another way, the game has an imminent death that we just learned about 4 Thursday’s ago. So let’s take time over the coming weeks to process.

Swiss-American psychiatrist Dr. Elizabeth Kubler-Ross introduced the most commonly taught model for understanding the psychological reaction to imminent death in her 1969 book titled On Death and Dying. The book explored the experience of dying through interviews with terminally ill patients and outlined the “Five Stages of Death” (now commonly referred to as the “Five Stages of Grief”): denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance (DABDA).

So let’s continue with the NIH definition of Depression.

Depression is perhaps the most immediately understandable of Kubler-Ross’s stages, and patients experience it with unsurprising symptoms such as sadness, fatigue, and anhedonia. Spending time in the first three stages is potentially an unconscious effort to protect oneself from this emotional pain. While the patient’s actions may potentially be easier to understand, they may be more jarring in juxtaposition to behaviors arising from the first three stages. Consequently, caregivers may need to make a conscious effort to restore compassion that may have waned while caring for patients progressing through the first three stages.

In terms of Tapped Out, I experienced depression from the central loss that this game I’ve been playing for over a decade will be gone. I also experienced depression reading a lot of your comments.  Call it, empathic depression if you will, but reading have said many of you were about the news made me upset as well. However, what are the other games I played, DC Injustice And also just come to an end a year earlier. It went through a similar. Of making the announcement, offering free, premium currency, and then shutting off completely. I feel that really made this experience a little  less stressful and depressing. I had kind of already experienced this before with another game I played for many years. Although that one was only maybe about five years. But still, having experienced similar loss before made the depression associated with this much more bearable. But even now, four weeks later, reading your comments from time to time brings on some depression. Well, I did reach acceptance pretty soon after, I still cycled between depression and acceptance from times to time. One of the best ways I moved onto acceptance was during the live roundtable with Alissa, Wookie, and Patric. Talking about my feelings with someone definitely helped. I also mentioned the end of the game with my family. They also acknowledge that it’s the end of an era. And their support helped as well.

How about you? Are you still experiencing depression that the game is coming to an end? If you have moved on past depression, what was the depression phase like for you and how long did your depression phase last? Sound off in the comments below.

And be sure to come back next Thursday for your next therapy session.

Thursday October 3 – Denial

  1. I know there are much worse things to be upset about. But from an entertainment point of view only…..noooooooooo, even after all these years of playing this game and some of the repetitive events and what not, I am NOT ready to say goodbye. My fave game on my devices by far. Waaaaahhhhh! 😥

  2. I still go back and forth between acceptance and depression. The thought that I will no longer tap away daily or be able to try and arrange my Springfield differently, does still feel sad. At the same time, I’ve tried to take advantage of the limited time we have left to get everything and just enjoy sending the characters to do various tasks.
At the same time, the lack of a new event has also made it a bit easier in preparing me to say good bye.
I still wish they would just leave it as an offline option or have a small charge or fee for those of us who want to continue playing it.

  3. Ended for me already. Wanted me to re log in as it often does but when I click the log in part it boots me to the main screen of my phone. Guess I’m done already.

  4. Can someone ask Alissa If she understands why there is a recent clip of Billy Crystal ending a short interview saying, “Go Dodgers”…is he trying to “manifest” a Mandela Effect for the future? I thought he was a Yankees Fan? Oh….I’m sure Safi could provide me with an accurate count of how many former Red Sox players are part of each team. As John W. Henry labored….”let’s go red sox…let’s go Red Sox”…anyway…Safi I’m sure you’d love to drop your baseball knowledge on me..,we all really don’t have much time. It may be kismet that the last World Series is The Los Angeles Dodgers vs. The New York Yankees. …now….think …insert “sternutation”…here..could this all be a Gods Blessing? Some say yea…some say nay….but all go back to the Treat Francisco San, the Roni a Rice….

    * I’m not to be held responsible for any implied or inferred
subliminal or back masking *… As the Great Ozzy quoted in Hymn by the lowly…yes lowly…Mr. Crowley…”Won’t You Ride My Horse”?

    Goodbye….pointing to Slow Poke Rodriguez…adios!

    • Why haven’t the Hackensack Bulls won recently … 🤔🙃😁

      • Maybe they were confused and started playing hacky sack instead? You 90s people remember playing hacky sack during lunch before fiFith or sixth period…oh the joy..funny story..I had an uncle at my high school that taught chemistry, yea…small town…we were kicking the hacky sack around outside when he was passing…I said..”hey uncle ‘frank’..wanna join….he said.., “what is that thing you’re kicking around, a dead rat”..I was pretty high, so I found that hilarious..even 33 years later.

So…whom are these Hackensack Bulls you speak of?
That question sounds like the start of a joke..
Why haven’t the Hackensack Bulls won recently?
        I don’t know…why?
Because their coach looks like Beaker and the players can’t understand him. Or…they’re probably drunk.

  5. I’ve accepted it. It’s gotten too big. Too glitchy. The events are not fun. They’re just boring and monotonous.

When I first started playing 12 years ago, my mind was blown by how much fun this game was. New events felt like Christmas morning when you were a kid. There were so many surprises and unexpected things.

I feel like I’m holding on to the past, now. I’m past the shock of the game ending and feeling ready to say goodbye.

    • Dude!

I’m 47 years old and have heard some horror stories… That’s why I just keep to myself and quit dating! Maybe, I’ll find a hot grandma to kick it with someday!

I travel a bit around the lower 48. I’m single. It works. I also get per diem pay. Hotels, meals and expenses. I sleep in the truck and get my shower at the Planet Fitness…

I once applied for a job at McDonalds. They wouldn’t hire me because it’s against their policy to hire anyone with tattoos. Even though I was more than willing to wear long sleeve work shirts. It’s against their policy to hire anyone with ink.

The only other fast food jobs I ever worked was Burger King and Rally’s.

There’s no shame in working a low wage job. Even Donald Trump recently got a job at McDonalds! 😊

  6. While I’m sad that the game is ending, I do really appreciate that EA has made it possible to do a lot of content that I missed. I’ve now completed all of my character sets and have a number of quests going. From my perspective, they are handling this in a way that is quite kind to their player base.

That’s not to say I’m not sad that the game is going away. I know I’ll miss having it as something I spent a few fun minutes on every day.

Overall, sad that it’s going away, but accept that and appreciate all the joy this game has brought me.

  7. So sorry that this game is ending! One thing that I would like to do before it ends is ge the elf back into its box! lol Please someone share with me how to do that. Thank you.

    • Tap on the elf and he runs back to the box.

      • Maybe he’s having trouble finding the elf? Mine was well hidden from me for a year or two at one point! I must have accidentally tapped on it in its hiding place at some point without realizing it, because one day I noticed he had made it back to his box.

    • KRoon64/ Keith Rooney

Searched for ages for the gnome in the home, still looking 😆

  8. The only thing that might depress me are the thousands I spent over the past 12 years buying all the premium stuff…

I knew eventually that it would come to an end but I’m not going to rage over it, like I did back when Star Wars Galaxies went offline. It’s just that, that was the only Star Wars game that I actually liked the same as Tapped Out is literally the only smartphone game I like.

Thanks for keeping this site alive all these years. It’s been great!

Now, how much longer will The Simpsons show last…

    • I think people like you should be thanked for spending so much on the game. People like you are likely the reason the game has survived so long. I got into a couple or few hundreds spent over 10 years or so..and an occasional 10 bucks here and there….unfortunately we live in a world where getting as much as possible for free is a way of life for some. But I digress……

I used to chuckle, to myself of course, when the Mom of our Daughter would complain about sales tax, income tax, or any other tax..saying every tax is too high and everything is too expensive. We had really never been together, but she ended up having 3 kids, 3 Different dads. This is fact…with these 3 kids with 3 different dads, she never really had to pay for anything…low income 4 bedroom apartment, 100$ a month, maybe 500-600 dollars a month food stamps, which she would often trade some of, for a smaller amount of cash, child support from 3 fathers..at at least 100$ a week. And when income tax came around, because of the child tax credits, her refund was usually between 7 and 10 grand. Yes..7 to 10 thousand dollars. I hope I’m not encouraging any young ladies out there. This is not hyperbole, and it’s all true. When I went court to get as much visitation as possible…all my receipts for crib, bassinet, toys, diapers, my mom bought her a used car, basically everything a baby needs, the judge said that can not be used towards child support. Wow….I couldn’t believe it. And that was just the start of the process of being a single Dad in the U.S. It took me 12 years to finally have sole custody of my Angel. And for those rolling their eyes….imagine going to pick up your child for scheduled visitation and being greeted at the door by the other parents new boyfriend or girlfriend, and them saying..your child isn’t gonna be able go with you today..she’s not feeling good. So you go to the police station and they say there’s nothing they can do, you’ll have to go back to court. So then you explain to the other parent that this is wrong and you have the right to your child, sick or not. This leads to an argument, then the other parent files a bogus temporary restraining order…you go to court, now 30 days since you last saw your child. The parent filing this bogus temp restraining order doesn’t show..case dismissed. This exact thing happened to me 3 times, until finally a judge did not allow a 4th temp restraining order, after learning that I, the Father, had to be called around 3am to go get my Daughter at her apartment because mom wasn’t even there, and my daughter, and her now 2 year old brother, not mine, we’re just left alone. Thank God I had given that neighbor my number in case of an emergency. This probably has a lot to do with my now cynical, lack of any hope, perspective on life in general. I wonder how many men have had to go through this ordeal for years. I’ve felt the extreme rage, anger, and hatred this can cause young men. Luckily I had support that many don’t likely have.

In closing, thank you for not being a greedy, entitled, person who will go to anything to obtain “stuff” for free. I appreciate you Brother for supporting this game to that extent. Sad thing is…most people are probably just calling you a sucker for spending money on the game. It’s nice to have things you love. Sometimes money and time are spent on things we love.

Oh…last thing…. I, as a teenager, worked at McDonald’s, my brother worked AT McDonald’s, many of my friends worked at McDonald’s. Ask yourself or any of your friends that may have worked AT McDonald’s. I promise none of them will say they worked “IN” McDonald’s when they were younger. I heard this woman on tv say when she was younger, she worked “in McDonalds “….lol…no one that ever worked AT McDonald’s…would say “ I worked IN McDonald’s “…that’s how you know they are lying. Look it up..find that woman and look at her response…” I worked IN McDonald’s”….if you lie about such a trivial thing..what about the important stuff?

      • So misspeaking one preposition as part of a much longer conversation is an indicator that one is lying? GMAB!

        • No…not the incorrect preposition that matters…. It’s one of those indescribable type of errors in speech. Ask ANYONE in the WORLD….you can even say, “have you ever worked IN McDonalds?” If they have, I promise you EVERY SINGLE PERSON will say, “yea…I worked AT McDonalds”…AT…AT…McDonalds. All ask is try it..even ask your friends…ask yourself..it’s not about proper grammar, it’s about integrity, truthfulness, and character. I actually don’t even blame her…she was never nominated..,she was placed there, which actually in my opinion brings up a case for illegitimacy to her eventual victory anyway, but it’s clear as a blue sky she is way way out her league…and is a puppet being told what to do..no joke..I feel bad for her because there is nothing she can do about it now. Sad. Can you imagine anyone saying, “oops I’m late, gotta go to work IN Walmart, or , “I’m sorry I’ll be late honey…i have to work late IN Burger King…or hey man/woman where do you work? I work IN that gas station…I used to work IN that supermarket, but I had kids so now I work IN my home. Words Matter People! But I understand how you people think…I’m sure you remember slick Willy saying “it depends on your definition of what IS means..”..and the left love to talk about Trump being a womanizer…there was no bigger pig that William Jefferson Clinton. Remember…he even held hands with Bob Dole….”twirling, twirling…towards freedom”!

          • Have you considered that maybe she meant to say “at A McDonald’s,” but just lost the “a” as she was speaking? I think it’s a pretty big stretch to use a slight misspeak from someone who’s been speaking practically nonstop for the past couple of months as proof of anything. The other candidate has made WAY bigger speaking mistakes…remember the Revolutionary War airports? 😆 And that was just one of dozens (probably more like a hundred).

  9. I’m ok. I think I was made ready for this by this page and everyone’s undying realistic approach to how long EA could keep the game going. I’ve been playing since The Stonecutters, and have added the content I missed so far. With Taps 5 I’m finding myself hesitant. It’s going to end anyway, and I’m the only one that knows it’s incomplete, so who cares?

I may blow it up and rebuild a little. I may give up. I’m not sure yet, but I believe I’ve jumped ahead to acceptance, which is much better than the initial feelings I had after that fateful announcement
