Totbox’s Throwback Thursday: S2 E12 The Way We Was

Why do Words suddenly appear, every time you are here (on TSTO Addicts)?

*all dolled up in my most prom-iest attire* Would you do me the honor of going to a Prom Themed Throwback with me?

No?! Well I’m going to go by myself then. I remember my first Thowback, it felt fresh and everyone who read it had something to say. It was a while ago but feels like it was yesterday to me *everything getting foggy and …. * Nope, nope. No time for flashbacks, lets focus on the current post (about a flashback episode).

“The Way We Was”
Homer and Marge PROM(ise) to stay together in this 70’s flashback

January 31st 1991 the episode aired, though the story mostly takes place about 17 years prior. 1974 (assumably May or June – since that’s the typical Prom months). Nixon was still president but he resigned (later that year) in August (1974). But if you go back further to 1970 the song “Close to You” was released. Lets stop traveling back, lets go forward, back to this episode. The 25th episode, Season 2 Episode 12.

FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING:
Rainier Wolfcastle (also first time of him as McBain), Artie Ziff, (Wise Guy) Raphael !!! 🙂 and Springfield High School (like in our game but with a different paint job, and fewer/more pillars – but to be fair they could have had a paint job within the 17 years that passed)

There are also characters and items that appeared for the first time that Could come into TSTO in the future maybe. OH THE POSSIBILITIES:

Some previously requested Characters: Principal (Harlan) Dondelinger “That’s Mr. Dondelinger!”, and Marge’s dad (Clancy Bouvier).

Possible Skins: Young High School versions of Homer (and Prom Homer), YHSV of Marge (and Prom Marge), YHSV of Barney (maybe with streaking task), YHSV of Artie Ziff (and Prom Artie), Younger versions of Abe Simpson, Jacqueline Bouvier, Patty and Selma, young Hibbert (with an Afro) which was a different time period, and Limo Driver (outfit) Raphael.

Possible Events: Flashback event, Prom event, 1970’s event, High School Experience event. Marge Memory event (I would like Marge to be more involved or a focal point to an event someday). How about another movie event (unrelated to Halloween), a Summer Hollywood Blockbuster Action Movie Mcbain event?

Characters and Things I didn’t mention because I personally have no interest in them joining the game Don’t Mention It: various students (including Marge’s friend), various teachers and staff, prom waiter, Yakkin’ About The Movies critics, Mcbain’s boss and background movie actors/people. Also buildings like Macramé Nut, “Hardware” (different from a previously seen store with the same name), Shelbyville High School (orange building pictured above), and Inspiration Point.

some Highlights:

Butt wait, there is still more!

Some other things to think about:

The sequence with Dr. Hibbert had Homer and Marge at a different age than any other within this episode, but it was so brief I didn’t mention it as a skin possibility (Homer and Marge) since I know there are more flashback episodes closer to that time period where I could bring it up more effectively. Whether or not I get to writing those other seasons, is another (unknown) story.

When the episode ended we don’t know if they fixed the Tv or had to replace it. Mcbain’s enemy Senator Mendoza was mentioned. Marge met Homer in detention but she somehow knew about “the shop kids” (Homer and Barney) and their bathroom habits. I studied the students and can’t see any other familiar faces except maybe, just maybe Officer Lou (a guy in photo with his prom date, but I’m not convinced, so he wasn’t included as a possible skin). Luckily this took place in 1974 instead of 1976 otherwise Prom Queen Marge may have been pranked like the character of the same film name “Carrie”.

Speaking of movies, the “Yakkin’ About The Movies” critics were obvious spoofs of Siskel and Ebert. What I find funny was the episode opens with them and this was Jon Lovitz first episode which you may recall had a brief stint as “The Critic” later on. Jon Lovitz also voiced the “shop” teacher Mr. Seckofsky.

Do you remember this episode? Do you give it a thumbs up or thumbs down? What was your favorite moment? Any of the Possibilities that you Really do/don’t like? Where were you (or your parents) in 1974? Do you know how your parents met? Ever gone to prom (care to share)? Ever con a date with someone (meaning, lie to get closer to someone)? Remember Siskel and Ebert? Can you imagine a world without Flashbacks? Sound off in the comments and have a memorable journey back to your current space/time 🙂

  2. Wow…no comments yet? Great post Tot 🙂 I think a flashback event would be cool….Having Principal Dondelinger and throwback skins would be nice

    • Thank you again for your feedback, this is one of my favorite episodes.

MY (late) Pointless Opinion: First episode with Raphael (wise guy) my favorite Simpsons character, Artie Ziff (or better yet, Jon Lovitz’s First Simpsons episode), McBain! Flashbacks/backstory! I Love it 😜Love and Soulmates are not as easily swayed luckly Homer was stubborn or we’d be watching a show called “The Ziffs”. OR maybe not because of his “busy (tiny) hands” – Horray for sleeze bags (swaying public opinion for decades)! 😜 Though I wasn’t born in the 70s I found the high school experience relatable. And this episode may have inspired the show “How I Met Your Mother” there is a character named Barney in each 👌 (True Story Meme Here)

*yes this was Totbox’s opinion and it doesn’t reflect those of the admin nor the people whom may rethink to share (or not to share) on facebook or other social media. But thanks for the “Likes” even if they didn’t leave a comment 😜
