Time to explore a galaxy far far away…as the Space Update teased by EA has hit our games!
This is an IN-GAME UPDATE, so no need to download a new update from the app store (as long as you’ve downloaded the winter removal update. If you’re still seeing snow in Springfield, you won’t see the Space Update).
Kent Brockman will auto-start this for you. After the first part (which is basically instant built), you’ll need Comic Book Guy free to start part 2 and Homer free for the task…which is 6s. At that point you’ll unlock a few of the Deep Space Homer items in the store. Once you complete another 6s task for Homer the “event” itself will start. At least initially, this looks similar to the Thanksgiving Event we had this past year. Where you complete tasks to unlock prizes.
I’ll be back with more details as soon as I go through it all….
It looks like (at least initially) this “event” is 2 weeks long…so it’ll end just in time for a Valentine’s Day Event..
Sorry this took me a little longer than anticipated to update…dealing with a 2 month old who didn’t want to nap today.
First up, from what I can tell by the game script requirements. You have to have Quimby unlocked in order to start this.
So, as mentioned above this is similar to the Thanksgiving Event, where you have to complete tasks in order to unlock prizes. The prize task screen will open for you once you’ve completed Mars Won Pt. 3.
First let’s look at what’s new in the store..

Finally got Barney! Missed out when he was free and the Black Friday when he was discounted. Had about 500 donuts (free from years of saving up) waiting for a deal like this.
When was he ever free?
Christmas 2012, the first year the game was released. You had to buy him with coins (the Christmas currency) I think. I wasn’t playing because I am an android user and android didn’t start until March 2013, but my husband was playing then.

He must have been free at the beginning, because I have him and I know I didn’t use any donuts to get him.

I’ve had my eye on Barney ever since I started playing Tapped Out over a year ago, but at 250 donuts, I held off on adding him to my town. As soon as I saw the deal this afternoon, I entered the iTunes gift cards I got for Christmas and turned them into donuts. This looks like a fun quest with some interesting items. 🙂

Really wanted Barney. Wish it was a sale and not a rebate. I had to pull a few golden tickets. I pulled 6 tickets in this order. 20,9, three 6s and finally the full 100.
Barney the Astronaut is currently doing flips showing his balance. Now that looks great. So funny.
Was excited to see the drive in and space alien for sale…I bought it , and the alien is nowhere to be found. I hope I did not just buy the drive in for the same price as the combo was originally (150 donuts!). He us included in the graphic in the purchase screen…but nowhere to be found when purchased! Help….any advice?

Shouldn’t there have been a screen showing the alien/ mutant joining the game, like with the other character combos? I did not even get that.
No the Space Alien questline, not the Deep Space Homer one.

After playing for 1 1/2 years I finally got Barney! 120 donuts! wicked happy I waited!

EA WE HAVE A PROBLEM… I got a little (potato) chip on my shoulder about this. I don’t have enough donuts to buy Space Barney (S.B.) even if I really wanted him but since others get it as a bonus I think this is B.S. (Barney Space).
Outside of that, the dialogs pretty good, the chips are kinda cool (wished for more) but animation prizes :/ (but I want voice clip prizes 😛 ).
Grand prize, a rocket… Get me a talking Monkey! (I have been on a Monkey Obsession lately). There is a talking monkey briefly in that episode. The comment about an asteroid made me think of Bart’s Comet, hoped for Flanders’ safe shelter and a chihuahua … But it’s a mini event so I guess I shouldn’t scream about it, or at least scream in space where no one can hear me :p

Could you have stored it instead of placing it? Check your inventory, main section for it. Its called the Space Training Center. 🙂
For everyone mad that they “wasted” donuts on Barney already, please stop. That’s the nature of selling stuff. You’ve had and enjoyed him for a long time, don’t let the fact that he’s now discounted spoil it. If you bought him recently, check with Support.
Having said that, they absolutely should NOT be charging for his Astronaut costume; that really is a spit in the eye, and should have been free.
I completely agree! I bought Barney about a year ago, full price, no regrets. BUT. To be asked to pay additional donuts for his astronaut skin, which is included with the current highly discounted deal being offered, is just not right. Those of us who paid full price should be given that skin if not for free, for, oh, 5 donuts or so. It doesn’t seem fair to me that a lot of us have already spent 250 donuts for Barney, and now have to spend an additional 120 to get the skin (granted, it comes with the shuttle simulator, but I don’t even want that), while people purchasing now get Barney, the Bowlerama, AND the skin for 120 donuts total. Good for them, I say, but really EA, show a little appreciation for your older spendy players! The disparity between 120 donuts for the current deal, and 470 donuts for those of us who purchased awhile ago seems a bit much.

In my game the space Barney was included with the Bowlarama.
Yikes! Donut prices have gone up again. Now $140CDN for a boatload, plus Apple charges taxes! Guess I am now freemiun player only.

It is because the $US has appreciated 30% vs. the $CND over the last few years. It is going to get worse if the US Fed continues to raise the target funds rate.
It’s the foreign rates. It’s same for those of us in America trying to get stuff from overseas, we pay at times triple the amount of the cost of an item to cover the exchange and taxes to get it to USA.
Since thé update i cant launch thé game. Fox logo, black screen then app crash ans quitte. Under Android. Try to uninstall, reboot , réinstaller..same thing.
My bank account is zeroed out with dr. Appt coming up… and our next payday is the 3rd…

IMHO, if you’re living paycheck-to-paycheck, I’m not sure you should be spending money on buying virtual donuts or any other kind of paid entertainment (unless you’re a kid (or, these days, an adult) living with your parents or something). Too many real-world unexpected expenses that could come up — I think it’s dangerous to not have some amount of “cushion” in your bank account.
Since you’re butting in I suppose I’ll have a go as well. 😉
It sounds like she/he is already experiencing this “unexpected expense” (that was a lot of x’s). That doctor’s appointment sure sounds more expensive yet routine than it should be. Sometimes it makes more sense to try to enjoy life (and video games) than to be perfectly comfortable financially. Especially for someone experiencing something dire.
I’m no expert, so he/she should take my opinion as less valuable than Sandra’s.
Hage had Barney for a while. Wish I could have gotten the rebate, but oh well. At least they are not giving him away for free.

I guess EA is gonna force me to go premium after 18 months of playing freemium cause I only have 224 donuts (rebate v. straight sale makes no sense to me) but will not miss out on this deal.
Also, this mini-event gives me a reason to finally buy some of those dumb ‘hail ants’ signs. I have never really liked them and have had no use for them until now.
Your situation demonstrates perfectly their reasoning for doing a rebate instead of a straight sale: People who have enough for the sale but not the rebate are more likely to buy the donuts they need, so as not to let it go by.
You are so close. Why don’t you do a bit of XP harvesting for donuts. And with donuts from rail and maggie, you may hit it! I am freenium and I don’t think I can get Barney this round.
I’m soooo glad I got distracted yesterday when I was going to buy Barney! I got the donut rebate the astronaut skin with it, I am so happy! I’ve been hoarding my donuts and grinding at the rail yard. I’ve been playing for years now and I’ve been saving to buy Barney the whole time. I’m stoked. The rest of the event could suck and I wouldn’t care. Lol. Thanks EA!
I bought Barney with the deal and got the space skin included. Shuttle alone costs 70 or 75 donuts.

Hmm. I bought Barney’s Bowlerama for the deal, not the Space Ship (I made sure of it) yet I have his skin? Am I lucky and got it by mistake or does Barney’s Space skin come with his Bowlerama?
Barney’s astronaut skin is part of the deal in buying the Bowl-a-rama right now.

Wow! I love this update! I’ll admit that I peeked at one of those “other” TSTO sites and saw that the rocket, shuttle, and other space-related goodies may have been on the way, and as an aerospace engineer, I was pretty excited.
I couldn’t be happier with the Barney deal. I’ve wanted that character for a long time but always talked myself out of pulling the trigger — and I missed the prior Thanksgiving deal with the donut rebate. I didn’t even hesitate and picked him and the Bowlarama up right away.
It’s worth pointing out that the shuttle costs only 75 donuts if you don’t have Barney (or if you buy him with the current deal), a significant difference from the 120 if you already have him. That may factor into the future “Should I Buy It?” article. For me, I had to have it regardless of the cost, and I’m currently designing a Springfield Air & Space Center for the items from this event, plus other science/aeronautics type decorations from the game.
Best deal so far. I’ve never thought of getting Barney at all because of the cost of donuts and I won’t spend anything from 150 donut and above. But this is just perfect. 120 for him and a new building with a bonus skin. What?!
I’m excited at the same time a little not because I was planning to take this down time to finally reach 1 billion on Heights as I’m just 200 millions away. Now, this will have to be push back.

I don’t think I’ve ever spent donuts faster than I did when I bought Barney this evening. Usually, I ponder and weigh and analyze before I decided to spend donuts, but the minute I saw that I could finally get Barney, the Bowlarama, AND a skin for Barney for a net of 120 donuts, it was an insta-buy for me! I mean, I literally saw it and tapped “Buy.”
If nothing else good comes from this event (and it looks like there are some pretty good things coming) and it turns out to be glitchy and difficult and whatever, I’ll still be happy about it because of that deal.
Also, I was intrigued by the “animation” prizes…is this the first time we’ve had those in this game?

I’m one of those happy people who hadn’t bought Barney and so just scored huge with the rebate. Plus the space shuttle is VERY cool looking and comes with a Barney skin and offers up event currency – that added up to value for me. The Inanimate Rod is a great bonus % for the donut investment. I’ve been hoarding bonuts for 6 months, and splurged some of my Google Rewards play credit on Golden Scratchers that added another 80 donuts (I got so lucky!) and jumped on all of it without hesitation.
