Addicts Housekeeping: Android App Issues

Hey Guys,

Listen, the Android version of the app is having a lot of issues right now if you’re not on Marshmallow (Android 6 OS, the newest version).  I’ve alerted the developer and they’re working on it.  However, it’s taking longer than I’d like.  And I know a lot of you are frustrated and angry about it.  Including leaving bad reviews or sending emails accusing us of using the app to just show ads.

Let me be perfectly clear…that is NOT the intention of this app.  In fact we (meaning the Addicts) most likely won’t even see a dime from the ad revenue of this app, at least not for quite a while.  As the little incoming revenue from both versions goes to the developers to pay for app hosting and the development.

The goal with the Addicts App was to basically give you guys what you’ve been requesting…an app with easy access to the website.  As well as notifications when new stuff hits.  And the app works beautifully on iOS and on Android Marshmallow.  But for those with anything else, it’s just not working properly, and for that I’m sorry.

Please know that it’s not our intention to provide you with a product that doesn’t work.  And we’re working to fix the problem.  I’ve told the developer to either fix the problem today or pull the app off of the Google Play Market until it can be fixed.  I won’t have a product that doesn’t work using our name out there.  It just doesn’t sit right with me.

Again, the iOS version works perfectly, so iOS users nothing changes with your version.  And the Android version works as long as you’re on Marshmallow.  On any other OS of Android it’ll just show you notifications, it will not load content.

So a good tip to fix it would be check to see if you can download the newest OS from Android, Marshmallow on your device.  That will correct the problem if you can.  I have Marshmallow on my Galaxy S6 and have no issues with the app.

So if you currently have the app downloaded and it’s not working, please know that we are aware.  I am trying to get it resolved.   I greatly apologize.  And if it’s not fixed today the free app (Android version only) will be pulled from the market completely until they can work properly.

Also, I’m personally requesting that some of you please stop leaving negative reviews telling us that we suck in the app store or sending vicious emails about it.  It’s an app that you’ve downloaded for free, to link to a website that you view for free (both of which have ads on them by the way, so if you don’t see them on the website it’s because you have an Ad blocker, which really in the end only hurts you.  Because the less revenue the site generates the less money we have to put into the game and put into giveaways on the site.  Which is why over the last year or so you may have noticed less and less giveaways.  That’s because more and more of you have installed ad blockers.  So yes the site is free, but those extra things we give you, and the money we put into the game..all that generates off of the ad revenue from the site).  It’s really not worth some of you getting angry or nasty over.  Honestly.  It’s just not.

In the end, I’d like for this to work but really this Android version is causing me more aggravation and frustration than it’s worth.  It really is.  So if it comes down to it, we’ll just pull the plug on the Android App.

Thanks for your patience!

-Alissa

  1. Hi and sorry but i have to put my two cents in! I run IOS 7 so i cannot dl the app! If i could and had troubles then my solution is go old school aka back to WordPress! It still works as you can see by my post! I just do not see the reason for negativity! It is so non-productive! THANK YOU, Alissa for EVERYTHING YOU DO! You know we love hearing from you!! 😉

  2. I just went to the play store and put a thumbs down on every one star review. I don’t know it that helps at all, but it sure felt good. 🙂

  3. Hi…chiming in with my 2 cents. My phone is on marshmallow & the update caused me 2 1/2 days hassle with data problems. Had to change a # in the APN settings. Anyways.I find myself still prefering WordPress. I like the notification aspect but when you press the notification…I’d rather it take me to that particular article. Don’t mind ads generally..been putting free stuff on phone/tablet forever. Saying that,,I prefer the banner running at either the top or bottom of my screen. It startled me when I’m reading something & a full page ad just pops up out of nowhere. As soon as I feel like most kinks & glitches are sorted out I plan to buy the premium version to try to give back a little bit. This site has really helped me alot of aggravation over the past few years. & didn’t realize how emotionally connected it becomes. Last week I was in almost meltdown mode with nowhere to go & just being able to come here to voice my issue…well,, it helped me immensely! & the help & feedback I received from 1 mrsMLKnight was awesome!! I have to imagine the negative 💩 outs from people outside off this community. People download stuff sometimes I think just to see what it is…I’ve read so many reviews that don’t even seem to correspond to what they’re reviewing…truly sorry that app is causing so much stress for ya’all! 😱

    • *saved me aggravation*

    • See now THIS is good feedback. I wonder if this is what my issue is with my data this month. I never come close to maxing it out and this past month I was .1GB shy of the max.

This also makes me wonder if it’s just worth pulling the app down all together on Android. The iOS version works perfectly, but the same guy that worked on the iOS version doesn’t do Android apps. So he had to have someone else at the company do the Android version and I’m just not thrilled with how it looks and works.

      • Just my own thoughts..IF it was me,,,wasn’t happy with the whole turn-out I’d probably take it down…find someone I know & trust with something that’s going out with my name on out l

        • Omg..oops…**my name on it…rework the whole thing & then try again. Because honestly,,,

          • OMG I DID IT AGAIN!! From what I hear you have a lot on your plate already without an extra headache right now….ok done now…sorry about that😎

      • I’m late to the party. I don’t really have anything constructive to say except that an app for a game should at least work on the same OS versions that the game does. That would make sense. I’m on 4.4.3, so I’m not even close to whatever number Marshmallow is. As far as I can gather, this app was working but just stopped. (I’m just acknowledging the facts.)

Also, I’m replying here because this is where you say that a probably less than enthusiastic guy worked on the Android version but apparently has no pride in the work he does. It is nice that you and your iOS guy tried to include us red-headed stepchildren. I appreciate that, even if my phone is so limited that I didn’t even attempt to get the app. Sorry that you got such hateful feedback. Just pretend it was all directed at this Android guy (who I’m guessing is really an iOS guy with a small amount of Android knowledge).

  4. I truly don’t understand people who get entertainment and help for free and complain about it. You do amazing work here. Trying to give people an even easier way to keep up with a game, and getting slammed when your free help isn’t PERFECT – that’s just people acting like entitled toddlers. Feh. Keep doing what you do. I hope you can see from these comments that it’s appreciated.

I’m trying to phrase this properly….

This is harassment, and whether it be sexual harassment, or psychological or intimidation, this is not about a REVIEW, this is about power, being in control.

People who have no mind of their own deserve to look like fools. People who have no power or control in their lives steal it whenever they can.

It can be difficult, but try to not let the illigetimums get you down. That is how the poor souls get their only pleasure in life.

Pop psychology lesson is now concluded.

Stay tuned next week for why certain four letter words are considered vulgar.

  6. Sorry people are being so nasty to y’all because you of all people definitely do not deserve it after all the hard work you put in here. This tapper loves ya and is super grateful for for all you do!

  7. I had the App but uninstalled it when it quit working. No problem here. I usually get any notifications through my email anyway. So all is good. I also appreciate all the hard work you all do. So a BIG thank you.

  8. I have only started playing TSTO myself since the middle of the past Halloween event, and learned about the addicts site at the beginning of the Christmas event. I must say in that time I’ve seen nothing but positive and kind posts from you all. You’ve been so helpful to those of us slowly learning the game and giving us wonderful tips. And the hard work you’ve put into the app is really appreciated. I’m on Android and am planning to install it soon once I can free up some stoarge space. I just wanted to say my appreciation to the addicts and I am sure the same goes for the rest of us new players.

  9. I’ve visited this site for near on a year and fully appreciate all of the time and work you guys put into it. It’s disappointing to find that there are others that think otherwise and that repulsive behaviour is necessary/acceptable.
Push notifications still come through on my device btw, which I haven’t updated yet.

  10. Alissa, I have to say, you know what I think if you guys, and at risk of repeating myself – you are truly all incredible. You’ve had the patience and perseverance to stick with the blog for well over two and a half years, and that on its own is tough. I’m sure I speak for the vast majority of the site and app’s visitors when I say we all love you. Keep your head held high. And I have to say to those people who are writing those emails and reviews – Think. Do you really think the addicts would put something out there to try and scam you? Be thankful that they’re even trying at all.
I for one won’t be installing ad-blockers – I know it’s tough from personal experience. If there is anything I can do to help you guys, please don’t hesitate in asking. I’ve been a fan of you guys way to long to see you suffer, so I mean that my offer of help if genuine if you ever need an extra pair of hands 🙂

    • Thanks Wilki. 🙂 (and just for everyone the thing about the ad blockers isn’t intended for anything other than to combat some of the things we’ve been seeing people write in emails, with “how dare we put ads on an app when the site has no ads”. More just intended for people to get that Ads are how we function..otherwise it comes out of my pockets. And my pockets are only so deep lol)

      • Well then How Dare Those people send you bad Reviews by Email! The Addicts Team have put their heart and soul in this blog, and they always offer to help us when we have a problem, and they have created a great community with this blog. The LEAST we can do is see a little ads. I suggest you put those ungrateful reviews in the trash.

  11. FWIW, having it only work on 6.0 really means you’re going to cut out a lot of us. I run v5.1 because that’s the latest version available on my phone unless I decide to root it. Verizon is notoriously slow on getting updates out.

I’m a fan of contacting the developer with issues, and only give negative feedback when I get no/rude responses from them. But then again, I don’t get joy from slamming people 🙂

Keeping an app running is hard work and I appreciate what we got – now I just want it to start working again! 😀

And…as far as app feedback, I love it and can only think of a couple tweaks to make it better:
    1. When an alert pops up for a new article, have it take us to the article.
    2. Have a “Latest Stories” button. I like to just read what’s new without having to dig into categories to find it.

Those two things would bump you up from a 5-star rating to a 5-star rating with my eternal gratitude 😉

  12. *hugs for Alissa*
    We still love ya!

  13. Sorry you’re getting this Alissa, sometimes the more you do, the more some expect. I don’t think those that scream and leave bad reviews realise how hard it is for the big developers to create apps that work on dozens of different devices all running different versions of operating systems, never mind the small developers.

For the small developers and folk like yourself you really rely on constructuve feedback from the app users to sort out glitches and hiccups not screaming and shouting which usually just sees small developers pull their apps instead of having the confidence to keep working at improving them.

I hope you don’t feel you need to pull the app permanently, and equally don’t pull all your hair out dealing with this. But I understand if it’s one thing too many things to carry it may need to go.

And for those who complain about ads, well we all moan about them to some degree but remember they keep many sites and apps alive. And it’s funny as when through our games we get free premium currency for watching ads we complain that we arent getting enough of them. Try to look at this sites ads in this way, only instead of premium currency you continue to get helpful and fun blog posts.

    • Thanks 🙂

I don’t want to delete it permanently. I want it to work just as much as you guys do..so it’s frustrating when it doesn’t.

  14. Well, leaving negative reviews for apps that don’t work properly or are even malicious is part of the reason the review functionality is there, so the store doesn’t get cluttered with a bunch of garbage that people waste time and data downloading. That said, there’s no reason to be nasty unless you’re sure the developer published the application with bad intentions, but that seems to be symptomatic of society today.

However, speaking as a professional developer myself, releasing an application having only tested it on the latest version is a rookie mistake at best. The developer should know better.

    • It’s not the negative reviews…it’s the YOU SUCK reviews. Or the You’re cheating us reviews. Or the you’re intentionally doing this do take money from us reviews that are concerning to me.

The app worked a week ago, so I don’t know what happened for it to suddenly stop working on non-Marshmallow OS systems.

      • An aside – I get requests to work for free from people who want to leverage what I do and take a cut from the sale when the chance that I will receive any payment from the sale is next to nil. They would like me to polish up their storefront and make shiny..

When I suggest that I should not be working for free while they get paid, I am told that I am greedy, ungrateful, and have issues about money. They want to use my work to make themselves money and for me to buy groceries with the honor of being exploited.

And that entitled b.s. is infuriating. It’s always “my money matters more than your money” with that kind of person, and they try these guilt ploys like you don’t have the same right they do to make or save a dime. So don’t let them goad you into apologizing for the insane desire to at least break even.

So I have solidarity with you, sister. Head up!

  15. Free app, known issue when a user doesn’t update their phone to latest OS…yeah, deserves hate-filled emails and 1-star reviews…

Seriously, what is wrong with people? This is why I tend to ignore low reviews if they only complaint hat the app doesn’t work on their device. Did you update? Is your phone near-capacity? Did you try any sort of troubleshooting or polite attempts to contact support?

Not app-related, but I saw a game review in Amazon where the reviewer said they loved the game, but gave it 3 stars because they received it in a cracked case. Um…contact Amazon for a replacement? Why I’ve the game and people that worked on its low r view for that?

Anyway…people need to chill. It’s not the worst thing in the world. And you can still get to the site, just not through the app if you decided not to update your OS.

    • lol it’s not even the low stars that bother me. It’s the hate-filled emails we’re getting about it…people need to chill. There are some people that are letting us know via email they’re having a problem which is helpful. But then there are bothers who are just spewing hate…makes me nuts.

  16. Don’t take any guff from those swine! Thanks for all you do!

  17. I only have one issue with the app. When I get a notification about a new post and click it, it doesn’t open the article. I also can’t find the recent article either. Because that doesn’t work, I don’t bother using it and just head straight to the website. At the minute it’s pretty pointless (sorry) but I’m sure the issues will be ironed out. I have Marshmallow so that’s not the issue.

At the end of the day, it’s a free app. I can look at it for anything else if needed 🙂

  18. Trolls, haters, Internets royalty, etc. Don’t pay attention, guys. We love you and everything you do to enhance the game experience.
    Thank you!!!!

The heck with problems with “The App”,
Where is the review of SSC, Springfield Spring Cleaning update
    Where is the Calendar
    Where are the give aways.
Why are you wasting time at your jobs, your families, your lives, your needs
    Take care of us, now.

  20. I have to agree with your sentiments regarding nasty comments. THose are extremely unfair.

With regards to adblockers, however, I’m back to blocking everything everywhere. Ad networks serving malware is becoming more and more widespread and dangerous for end users:

  21. Mike.Britten549

Why wait, just pull the plug, it’s not like you owe anyone anything, you do a great job with this website, If people don’t appreciate your efforts them simply stop. Stop pandering to ungrateful Muppets

  22. Wow! Sometimes I’m embarrassed for humankind when I hear about people acting like thankless toddlers when dealing with others – especially when those others are providing a service FOR FREE to them. I’m saddened this morning for both the Addicts team and the developer who is working hard to bring others more convenience in their free-time life.

  23. My app hasn’t been working right for a little while, and I wasn’t worried – I get the prompts when you post new things and can look to the website instead.
I appreciate all the work you are doing to bring us an app and like any new releases there are always a few kinks to work out.
So THANK YOU for all of the work you are doing!! 🙂

  24. Well, for one grateful addict, I’d like to thank you guys for your years of making the game more fun and giving it a community to inform and encourage each other. It’s true that few can ruin something good for the many. I’ve seen a lot of crapweasels on the internet and nobody’s immune. But most of the people who have been coming to your site for years really appreciate your time and effort. I think a lot of the newer people just don’t understand, and I hope this post gets through to them. Thank you, Alissa Bunny and Wookiee. The majority of us love you guys. 🙂

  25. I can’t believe so many people are complaining about the app! I know it’s frustrating if a app doesn’t work, but Alissa, Bunny and Wookie, are offering us so much with this blog for which they spend their free time on, and they even made a app for us because we wanted it, and all this and it doesn’t even cost us a dime, and Alissa is equally frustrated and upset about the app not working. I can wait as long as it takes for the app to be fixed. 😊

  26. Well said! Seriously, people need to take a good look at themselves if they think it’s worth their time to complain about a free app, they really have too much time on their hands! Just pathetic.

You 3 do amazing work for the site, I for one appreciate it!

  27. Kim (kimberlyah794)

Maybe we can hope that the negative and super-nasty reviews are left by people who don’t regularly visit the site? Like they just found it in the app store? I try normally to think the best of people, but how awful!

You all know that most of us love you to pieces and appreciate all of your hard work and dedication to us and the game! Keep your chin up, Alissa!

  28. No bad reviews here , I just dumped it when I saw it in wasn’t working. Lol
Hope things get figured out. I’ll look for an Android update. Thanks

    • lol that’s what I would hope people would do…I don’t mind the bad reviews. It’s the hateful ones that make me nuts…it’s like there’s no moderation there so they’ll just spew hate because they can.

      • “…they’ll just spew hate because they can.”

Yeah, that’s the Internet summed up in a single sentence. =\

  29. How dare you provide something for free that 99% of us could not program ourselves! It must work perfectly 100% of the time like ALL technology does. You have ruined all of our lives!

    Or, you know, THANK YOU!!!

    😛

  30. Scrooo yooou guys, I’m goin’ home!

Seriously though, what the hell? Free site, free app, they bust their butts to foster a fun community, and you little pukes get all butthurt over a glitchy release and resort to raging and trashing them in the reviews? You punks can go bite a box of butts and bugger right the hell off.
