Wow. Can I just say, WOW??? The response to last week’s “What Kind of Tapper” post was overwhelming and amazing!! We were really excited to hear from so many of you who “came out of the shadows” to comment, offer your insight to how you play, and generally, just join in the fun. All comments, from all tappers are more than welcome here, and it was great to see so many new faces.
To continue with the theme… what I want to know this week, is “the rest of the story” as Paul Harvey used to say (does anyone remember Paul Harvey?). While I realize that many of the most ardent commenters on the site appear to be TOT++++ tappers with huge amounts of time dedicated to their tapping obsession (the “O” in TOT), there is a large number of you who seem to have found balance in your tapping lives, in order to…well…have a life!
In one of the updates, they started using a term that really struck me as a perfect description of time in the non-tapping and tapping world. “Life Currency” is something that really resonates, especially for those of us of the “age challenged” sector that are realizing the finite reality of this form of currency.
Time…and what you do with it outside of the game is what this post is all about.
Consider this post and basic question to be similar to what happens when you go to a regular meeting of some hobby group, or special interest gathering. Yes…you were all brought together in the same room due to your avid interest in quilting, or model railroading, or stamp collecting, or mushroom gathering, or collecting stamps with pictures of mushrooms and model railroads on them (it’s a very select group). But, once you have covered all of the minutia about the topic at hand, you might actually ask someone standing next to you, “So what else do you like to do?”
Now. I realize that this may provoke an intense, and horrified look of disapproval from a truly obsessive club member, as if to say, “What ELSE DO I DO?? Why…THIS IS MY LIFE!!! THIS IS WHAT I DO!!!!!!!” In which case, you should smile, and step away from the bar, and look for someone else to talk to.
But, in most cases, you will be surprised to find out that the person you asked, has interests and backgrounds, and histories that are wide-ranging from what you might suspect. I am always amazed to find that guys with whom I play golf regularly, actually have lives outside of the golf course. Really! Even those who golf almost every day!
Similarly, as I have been a TSTO blogger, and have asked readers this question before, I have been amazed at the breadth of occupations, avocations, and special interests that come from asking. I have TSTO Friends who are doctors, lawyers, teachers, and investment bankers. They all play for various reasons…but, “keep it real” by having broad, wide-ranging interests outside of TSTO.
Of course, we all tap. I get that. But, I am more than just a tapper, or even a just a tapper who blogs about tapping. Really! I’m not kidding!
As I have mentioned (and as you may have seen by one of the poses in my newly minted avatar) I golf….and am a U of O Duck fan. I have a long history of music and multimedia production. I did all of the music for a show that won an Emmy, and worked with the guy who is married to Matt Groening’s sister, Lisa…and I have five daughters, and four grandkids, and am married to the most patient, amazing wife in the world (she doesn’t restrict or deride my tapping).
Oh. And because of my connection to a ton of people who wanted to do “More than just Tap,” I started a non-profit organization to help a school in rural Uganda.
It was, and continues to be, primarily driven and supported by TSTO Tappers. Imagine that!!!
I won’t go into the details here…as what I REALLY want to hear about is you!!

So, that takes us back to the REAL Question at Hand…
WHAT DO YOU DO OUTSIDE OF THE TAPPING WORLD? Do you spend your “Life Currency” on pursuits away from your padular device? Do you seek and find pleasure and fun in pursuits that don’t reward you in “multipliers” and XP?? Do you find ways to offset countless tapping hours with something equally or even *GASP!* more rewarding?
WE WANT TO KNOW!! Tell us “the Rest of the Story!!”
So, me? I’m married (30 years), no kids, born and raised in NYC, but living in the Boston area for the past 38 years. Professionally, I work full time in the Learning & Development area of an international insurance carrier, and I specialize in e-learning design and development, instructional design, and documentation. I’m also the Chairperson of a regional user group for one of the e-learning authoring tools that I use and occasionally speak at industry conferences.
When I’m not working (or doing TSTO stuff), I lead a monthly Classics Book Group at a local book store (a group that’s been in existence for about 18 or 19 years, first at one chain and then, when that closed, we moved to another), and I’m active in my town’s Democratic Committee and currently doing campaign work for the upcoming Presidential elections (and some more local stuff). I also do volunteer work at the quarterly library book sales.
I also watch a LOT of TV shows (and some movies), have a subscription to a local theater (three plays and a musical), get together with friends, and do some basic crocheting (for charity, friends, family, and, occasionally, even for me!).
Oh, and, as folks who have been keeping up with the Open Thread for a long time know, I joined a fitness club back December/January…but, I have to admit that I haven’t worked out there in about two months (more?), for a combination of reasons. However, that’s part of my agenda for tomorrow, so wish me luck! 😉
Amazing! Red Sox or Yankees? And I thought of boom club of 9 years was a long time!
Neither, really…I’m more of a minor-league/semi-pro baseball girl (Go, Somerset Patriots!). But, my family was never that into sports teams when I was growing up, so I guess I’d pick the Red Sox between those two, because, after all, I have to *live* here, lol! 🙂
(Actually, the real answer I’m *supposed* to give is the Sox – but not the Red kind, the White kind, because my husband grew up outside of Chicago and he’s much more invested in the White Sox than I am in either the Red Sox or the Yankees.)
As for the book group…yeah – it’s just a really, really great group of very interesting, eclectic people, a few of whom have been in the group since the very first meeting! (I started in the group “only” about 16 years ago, myself, and have been leading it for about the past 10 years or so.
Ah…my daughter Katie is a Mets fan…works in NYC at CBS News…but lives in NJ. My Mom was from Chicago area…and a Sox fan.
This is such a great question and I’m loving reading the responses. I’m a speech-language pathologist for my job. I love cooking, hiking, reading, and binge-watching movies and tv shows on Netflix and Hulu (especially cooking shows, documentaries, and scary movies).
I like hearing about Patric’s Ducks fandom
because I grew up in Eugene and still visit a couple of times a year. I’m not a huge sports person but I keep my ear to the ground about the Dux and my grad school alma matar, the ASU Sun Devils.
Whoooohoooo! A fellow Bluegenian! You didn’t say where your travels landed. Eugene…as you kno is more than the Ducks…thankfully. They are struggling this year…
Last game was a little rough! I’m in the Phoenix area now. Eugene is definitely more than the Ducks…I make it to Art in the Vineyard most summers so that’s fun, and I really haven’t found a substitute for a couple of the Thai restaurants down here so I do miss those. I also just enjoy coming up in July so I can enjoy hiking and walking in a slightly more temperate climate, but I get some bragging rights when it’s in the seventies here in AZ in November.
Country Fair? Saturday Market? The other side of Eugene…
Love the Saturday Market! I went to the Country Fair every year as a kid but I haven’t been in a while-I find the traffic, crowds, and parking a little stressful. Saturday Market parking is a little bit bad too, but my mom is semi-retired from an office less than a mile away and still has a parking tag, so we generally leave the car there and walk.
Cool! My degree is in linguistics and applied language studies. While I never really considered going the direction of speech language pathology, it really fascinates me, and is so important.
It’s an interesting field. I did a complete career-switch and went back to school for it in my late 20s and I’ve really enjoyed it.
I’m so jealous of your classics book club! I wish I could find something like that. Mine is mostly contemporary books, many of which I would have gotten around to reading anyway. I decided I was going to take on a few classics myself, and in the last couple of months I’ve read Pride and Prejudice, The House of Mirth, Jane Eyre, and The Jungle Book. I just started Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein but I’m only a few pages in.
I joined it because, at the time, I was feeling like I wasn’t having much of an opportunity for “academic” conversation and had been reading fun, but non-challenging books for a long time, and, while my work was challenging and my coworkers were great, they weren’t really the kinds of folks who would be into that kind of thing/conversation. Also, I knew that if I tried to do it on my own, I’d never stick with it….it’s much more motivating to work through a more “challenging” book when you know you’re going to be going to a meeting to discuss it at the end of the month!
I was also fairly short on money (so taking a class in something was out), but the local Borders had this book group which was free (and you can always get classic books at the library or, nowadays, if their old enough, for free as an e-book), so I thought I’d give it a try. I fell in love with the group pretty instantaneously — they were such a loud, active, passionate group with folks just jumping in to talk all over the place….just like the kinds of conversations I grew up around.
That sounds amazing! I love the free older books I get on my kindle. Between those, Bookbub, and the library, my reading addiction is much less pricey than it used to be.
I’m a married 46 yo pediatrician father of a 14 and 11 yo. My wife tolerates my tapping though she probably believes deep down I am a TOT from the previous post. My kids played for a few months but moved on, and so now I occasionally manage their towns once a month or so. I bike regularly, read fantasy & sci fi when I can, and listen to various NPR entertainment podcasts in between.
Very cool! You at least the fifth doctor Tapper I know of…have you revealed you tapping to any of your patients?

37 year old mom of a 14, 12, and 10 year old. My oldest is high functioning autistic. My husband is in the military. We just moved, so I have been busy getting everything settled in our new house. I am hoping to go back to college and get my teaching degree for special education. I spent the last 3 years before we moved working in a special needs class and fell in love with the kids. I have been playing TSTO for a couple of years now. The only other game I really play is magic kingdoms. Besides gaming, my time is taken up by taking care of my house and my family. I love this site and visit several times a day. Always such great information.

Early 30s mother of three. I’m a Quality Assurance Tech two of a food manufacturing plant and my hubby is Maintenence for two apartment complexes. He is a huge gamer, and I am an avid reader. We doo cookouts, and biking, swimming in summer, basketball towards fall/winter. Winter is my busy season, so I’m usually on a seven day work week until about February.
Wow…I admit I haven’t worked 7 days weeks years. I admire your dedication! You must find ways to tap on breaks!
I’m single man, late 40’s, never married and no children. I’m involved in Finance, Income Taxes and Accounting but oddly I’m terrible at Mathematics. But isn’t that what my adding machine, computer, and Excel are for?! I’m not working now for the first time since 1992 and at first I thought I’d enjoy it but now I am anxious to get back to work. Since I was always focused on my education and career, I have never traveled much. But as a teen I drove cross country from California to Key West, Florida. We were were all crazy by the time we got through Kansas. But I was able to see the Heartland of the US, going East and drive through the South through Texas, and see the Grand Canyon going back West.
Not as exciting as others but it’s my life and I wouldn’t change anything. I’ve been able to connect with my niece and nephew so that’s a bonus to being between opportunities.
Contentment is its own reward! Good on ya!
I’m a 32 year old dad of 3 (one 3-year old, and new twins). I work in IT for a university student wellness department. I’m my spare time (using this loosely) I run, love to play DDR, read as much fiction as I can, volunteer on a church council, and play as many board games as I can.
My wife is fantastic and supports my passion for the Simpsons. I restrict my use during many of the waking hours of my children to give them the attention they need, stopping in only for brief visits during events to clear and reset.
I use tsto to keep up with some real world friends and gives me something extra to chat with them about and comment on designs.
Wow…three year old and Twins? Free time…in…oh…18 years?
Yay! Another parent of multiples!! Mine are 6 now, I miss them being brand new. I don’t however, miss the sleep deprivation.
My one tidbit of advice is to get used to the, “Are they twins?” question. Mine are identical and I used to dress them exactly the same as babies and I would STILL get stopped in the store to be asked if they were twins or not. Now they answer before I have a chance to in the most bored, annoyed tone lol.

I am a huge Nintendo fan and play games as much as I can. I cheer for New England and Baltimore sports teams, along with the Portland Trailblazers. I watch Game of Thrones and Walking Dead. I am a huge pro wrestling fan. I love Star Wars.
I attend a huge gaming convention (PAX East) every year. I collect a series of pins that Penny Arcade releases and host a podcast about them.

I’m a former attorney and current unemployed librarian (I hope to remedy that soon). I read, sew, embroider, make jewelry, etc. when I’m supposed to be cleaning and doing chores. I’m a one-game woman — first it was Might & Magic (introduced to me by my now-husband), then Morrowind, then WoW, then Skyrim, then WoW, and now Tapped Out.

I’m a 43 year old mom of two boys age 3 & 6. The older one is also a tapper. I work full time at my IT job. I also play ice hockey in the winter and attend PTA meetings during the school year. My oldest just started soccer this year and after that will be starting hockey. He’s starting cub scouts this year too. Weekends are spent going to his practice/games or doing projects around the house. I’ve been an avid gamer since video games have existed and I love to read although since having my boys there’s a lot less time for games and reading anything other than children’s books. My 3 year old is obsessed with Minecraft and builds amazing things in that game, so he’ll probably be a tapper soon enough too.

Early 30s, mum to a 2 year old boy, work 3 days a week in accounts, and sing in my spare time. (Spare time with a toddler? Ha! What is that?!) I used to scrapbook and play a fair bit of xbox but we moved a year ago and god only knows where the box of scrapbooking supplies ended up, and we never unpacked the 36p, only the xbone, so that is probably why I became a lot more active tsto at about that time! One of these days I’ll pick up my old hobbies again… in the meantime we do a lot of walking, my boy and i, and blowing bubbles. So very many bubbles.
I am on a corporate sales team and travel (and work) a lot. Sometimes it feels like Springfield is my only real home. Kind of why I love the game so much. :’)
When not traveling, I work from home. I take full advantage of this by maintaining the home – bedding, dishes, laundry, vacuum/mop, pick up some purty flowers, decorate for the seasons. It is also a requirement from my robotic computer programmer wife of two years to monitor the home for a consistent *entropy* (disorder) level (wa-pshhhh) … and tapping every few hours (tell no one [tell everyone]).
Like you, Pat, my wife does not restrict or deride my tapping. But she will occasionally narrate her own version of a “Nat Geo documentary” about me as I tap – “the TSTO tapper in his natural habitat, ::insert TSTO tapper idiosyncracies::”. A passive way of poking fun at me. This is acceptable.
Other than THAT, we make sure to exercise regularly! Biking, basketball, ping pong, frisbee. ONE DATE a week, a must! Picnics, dinners, museums, movies.
Just got some nephews brought into the world, that’s pretty cool, I find that pretty fascinating altogether. Never really dealt with kids much in my 31 years, now I want to order eight of them.

Another new set if uniforms this weekend…hard to keep up! Sounds like you have a rich, busy life outside of tapping! Very cool.
I am 52. I was one of the 500 best chefs in the UK in the 80’s. For the last 22 years, following an accidental CO exposure, I have been ill with CFS or CFIDS as you know it in the US or ME in the UK. I do some voluntarry work with Red Cross and sing in a choir. These are my biggest activities. I have lots of very supportive friends and family. I love travelling, although it is quite an ordeal at times, with me having collapsed many times in foreign countries! But I do not let it stop me. I do what I can to the maximum of my capacities. I live day by day and still very grateful for all that I have.

So besides tapping occupying my time, there’s work (bleh). But in the fun side of things, I have two dogs, both corgis and three cats. There’s a lot of fur in my life. I like to dabble in photography and write in my spare time. I sometimes play other games, mainly Disney Magic Kingdoms and Guild Wars 2.

Ok … I retired last year and decided to just take a year off from have to plan anything. I love video games and have quite a few platforms. My favorite games are Oblivion on my PS3 and Skyrim on my PC. I have an Xbox and Wii also but mostly play on my tablet. It’s just convient. I have cleaned out the kitchen cabinets, cleaned out closets, and did most of the yard. (It’s one acre) I still have the garage to do and get ready for a yard sale for next year. (I like to plan ahead.) I would LOVE a break from this game for at least a month so I could rearrange my game. I do have a daughter, grandson, and a great grandson. But they don’t keep me busy, they just make me happy.

I’m a nurse & just started on a night shift.
Like camping, BBQ, walking w/ fuzz beast, travel, making dream catchers, reading (Stephen King, Anne Rice), trying to really get into yoga.
Bf & I both have chronic diseases, when either of us are in a bad patch TSTO has been a great distraction 🙂
Hello fellow nurse. Oooh night shift, hard hours but love it!!! That 3:30 am to 5:30 time is tough, get kind of sleepy but then its time for lab draws.
So a bit about me, i am a 37 yo female with a boyfriend of eight years (he is not a fellow tapper but accepts my addiction) and i am a mama to an oversized (even with a grain free, weight control diet, exercise three times a day, he is still a couple pounds overweight) black and tan dachshund named Oscar, he’s my oscar meyer weiner dog…Answers to both Oscar and Weiner. He rules the roost. Worked as an inpatient oncology/ chemotherapy nurse for several years on the night shift. Loved it but it got hard on the body, i too have a chronic disease so nights got kinda tough. So I switched to an outpatient chemotherapy infusion clinic, Loved it but still tough. Then about two years ago my body kinda crapped out so im not working. However, Ive kept my RN license active hoping in the future i will get back to work, doing what i LOVE. Working with cancer patients is so rewarding!!! I live on the gulf coast and enjoy shooting coastal scenes. Im super close to New Orleans so lots of great photography there especially during Carnival season. I have a big family with four neices and two nephews who i love to spoil…and then give back to my sister!! The best way to have children in my opinion!
Currently im an extremely active tapper (mostly a non-farming freemium tapper) because i have tons of free time, however, im not always the best neighboreeno (except for events). But all in all, I am so happy to be just AnothrAddict and part of this community/family. Hugs to all!

I agree, i hope we never meet in the capacity of nurse/patient. I hate meeting anyone in that capacity but i have always enjoyed being a shining star in a very dim moment in my patient’s (and their family) life.

Have you seen 30 Days of Yoga with Adrienne, on you tube? I love her style, she’s funny and easy to follow. Some days are 15-20 min, some are longer, on days when I don’t have a lot of time it’s nice to pick a shorter practice, like the sun salutations, just to get the blood pumping and get in a positive mindset.
*shocked* we are supposed to have lives outside of TSTO? EA doesn’t seem to think so, after this event, lets throw out another event, then an episode tie-in, then Halloween, then another event, and a building that they need to do tasks to upgrade 😀

Hubby and I work from home, and I’m also studying online community development, we love to travel and play pc and videogames. we don’t watch to much tv (around 5 hrs per week) and our free tv channels are not showing anymore the simpsons, so its not point to watch tv :p. we like to listen music (I like metal opera , hubby like spanish rock),I like to read (fiction and historic novels)and crochet , hubby like to draw… I love animals, but at this moment we can not have any pets 🙁 ; we live again in Mexico, missing tons Australia, but every change is for something good 😀

Currently in my freshman year of college. I’m an author, and I’m 153,000 words into my first medieval fantasy novel.
I’m a Newly Qualified Teacher so trying to juggle the realities of that with trying to have some kind of work life balance. I teach History and I am really enjoying teaching the new year 7s (11-12 year olds) as they are enthusiastic and still new to Secondary School. Some of the older year groups are less enthusiastic and more challenging to teach.
I also am a Guide leader too so spend one evening a week running meetings and sometimes have events at weekends too. On a Sunday I generally go to church, unless I’m away on holiday or have a Guiding event. I must confess to miming the hymns if I have a sore throat though- must preserve the voice for teaching kids!
IF (not happening easily at the minute) I get some free time, I like to watch tv, read, spend time with my friends and grab some extended time on TSTO. I also love watching and playing soccer as well as a lot of other sports.
I am a mother of two 30 something sons, one daughter-in-law, a grandson (5 months) and a granddaughter (4), a step-mother of two 30 something daughters, one step-grandson (6) and married to the best (TSTO) guy in the world. Presently the only other member of our family is Haggis the rough collie. (I always bet Dogbiscuit)
I am ordained clergy in a main line denomination in Canada, ministering to a congregation of about 100 people.
I am an obsessive quilter, enjoy nature photography, music, gardening, reading (historical fiction), learning, and GOLF! I was once an obsessive MTG player and card collector, but have since sold most of them. My sports teams are the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and the Winnipeg Jets. I really love these questions you ask. It’s so fun to learn about other people. Patric, I believe you had people once talk about where they were from. That was a great idea and really interesting.
As for me, I recently joined my husband of almost 40 yrs in retirement and we just bought a new 5th wheel to replace our little travel trailer. So I see lots of camping in our future, as we will set out to explore areas beyond our own beautiful Pacific Northwest. But first a cruise to Alaska next week.
Life has been good to us .. two beautiful children, two wonderful grandsons and another new baby on the way in spring. The oldest grandson always comes camping with us during the summer, and I know I will be sad when he decides he is too old for that, but will be thankful for the years he did. We have tons of fun. And can’t wait to do the same with the younger ones.
Don’t care about sports at all, but love genealogy, and a good book (I do belong to a book club!) and enjoy growing lots of flowers in the yard so I can pick bunches of them for inside the house.
TSTO is falling down the priority list as we go off and enjoy life.

I am a 30-something year old mom of 3. I have a full time job working as an office manager for a small company that does contract work for the government (can’t tell much more than that except that when something needs to be tested, our equipment is used to track it). The owner of the company I work for also has a side business with rental properties and I manage those for her as well. My daughters (13 and 16) are also Tappers and my son will join as soon as he learns more responsibility. I play a few other games, the most recent one being the Disney Magic Kingdoms. I am also a beginner PC gamer. I just recently built a custom PC to play games with (I also have a degree in Computer Information Systems).
Sounds like a busy full life! 🙂
