Time to explore a galaxy far far away…as the Space Update teased by EA has hit our games!
This is an IN-GAME UPDATE, so no need to download a new update from the app store (as long as you’ve downloaded the winter removal update. If you’re still seeing snow in Springfield, you won’t see the Space Update).
Kent Brockman will auto-start this for you. After the first part (which is basically instant built), you’ll need Comic Book Guy free to start part 2 and Homer free for the task…which is 6s. At that point you’ll unlock a few of the Deep Space Homer items in the store. Once you complete another 6s task for Homer the “event” itself will start. At least initially, this looks similar to the Thanksgiving Event we had this past year. Where you complete tasks to unlock prizes.
I’ll be back with more details as soon as I go through it all….
It looks like (at least initially) this “event” is 2 weeks long…so it’ll end just in time for a Valentine’s Day Event..
Sorry this took me a little longer than anticipated to update…dealing with a 2 month old who didn’t want to nap today.
First up, from what I can tell by the game script requirements. You have to have Quimby unlocked in order to start this.
So, as mentioned above this is similar to the Thanksgiving Event, where you have to complete tasks in order to unlock prizes. The prize task screen will open for you once you’ve completed Mars Won Pt. 3.

I REALLY need a break in events so I can blow my Springfield. I keep shoving new items into the corners and it is starting to look like an episode of Hoarders in there. However, I can’t complain because I picked up the Barney deal. So, I guess I’ll slink back behind my piles of old newspaper and soda cans for now.
I also need a week’s break so I can start finishing up the questlines I have pilled up… Think I need Homer to be in 7 places at the same time 😛 Where is that cloning machine when we need it. Oh…it was Stewie’s =(

Is that how it works? If you have the same amount of stuff neatly placed instead of strewn about or “shoved” in a corner then you’re not a hoarder? I think you might just be considered a “near hoarder”. 😉

When you say “Springfield”, what exactly are you talking about? Your avatar icon made me curious.
Actually it’s a pretty ingenious strategy by EA to give a rebate on purchasing Barney rather than just discounting him to 120 doughnuts. By making you pay 250 doughnuts and then giving you a rebate of 130, they are forcing all the freemium players to purchase doughnuts when they probably really don’t want to or never have before. If they offered Barney at just 120 doughnuts instead of the rebate, many freemium players would be able to afford him outright, but now they have to buy doughnuts in order to buy him at 250 and then get the rebate. So for EA, it’s probably a cash cow even at the discounted price because so many freemium players are now spending their $$$$$ when under normal circumstances, thy never would have. Also, the psychology behind it also means that once you’ve bought doughnuts at least once, it will be easier for most to cave again in the future and buy more doughnuts at some point since you’ve already done it before at least once. Pretty smart EA!
Yeah, except in my case I look at the AU$15 cost for 132 doughnuts and I laugh, and don’t even worry about buying Barney. Nothing in this game, at all, is worth $15. If the building was $1 I might be swayed, but $15 is beyond stupid so I won’t bother. I made a lot of purchases over Christmas this Summer with my hard-earned freemium doughnuts, but there’s no way in hell I’ll pay that much for something that gives me 5 minutes of amusement at most…
yea, I have never bought donuts but am seriously considering it to get barney for so little. I am a crossroads here: I am little proud of myself for never spending real money on a game, but I have spent two years playing this game (with no ads…) and maybe I can through a little cash at it.

Downloaded the in-game update but still no space event. I’m at level 12. Do I need to be at a certain level with certain characters unlocked for the event to start?
As the post above says you need to have Quimby unlocked top get it, which is level 20.
Annnd THIS is why I come here. I’ve seen the episode, but had no clue what those floating things were. As soon as you said potato chips, I got it. Thanks! And those of us with kids understand the “no nap” thing. Good thing she’s cute right? 😉

Because like everything the people who get something first are always punished. It’s like that everywhere. If you’re the first one to buy a TV when it comes out you pay through the nose. But if you wait a long time it’ll eventually end up deeply discounted and they’ll throw in a free dvd player too…
But if noone buys it first, the product fails.

I was 100% freemium until ea broke me with that frink deal a few months ago and I spent £4.50 and now with this barney deal I’m going to have to buy donuts again in order to afford it because it’s just too good a deal to miss!! And if it’s true that the space shuttle stimulator produces Kang topiarys and miniature warheads for free then I may have to splurge 75 donuts on that as well!!
Actually I think it’s the completed rocket that generates Kang topiarys and miniature warheads so as long as we complete all 5 steps of the event then hello free way of increasing my towns xp payout

Same here – but there are deals that are too good to ignore. Frink’s and this one for Barney fell in that category for me.
Since there are no premium items I “must” have in my game, I’m content to wait for these deals. Now if only I can train my kids to think the same way…. patience is rewarded….

There is an Easter egg where if you send Lisa, marge and Bart to shop for space food for 6 hours you get 5 donuts. Also is it true that the rocket produces Kang topiarys and miniature rocket warheads?!
Wohoo! Been wondering what to spend my hard earned mostly freemuim donuts on. Glad i hoarded now i have Barney with donuts to spare!

If you buy now Barney’s Bowlarama, besides getting Barney and 130 donuts back, you alse get Barney’s space costume for free! I just got it. You should point this out in the article 🙂
I should but I won’t because it’ll just piss off the people that paid full price for barney. They’re already mad about the discounted rate. I’d rather restrict it to the comments
It is a little harsh that those of us who paid full price for him also have to pay full price for the skin. But complaining on the thread is certainly not going to solve anything. If we complain anywhere, it should be the EA forums. Why hassle you three when you have no control, right? 🙂

Price drop I don’t mind, but the bonus skin is like a slap in the face.
I actually bought donuts for Barney. I had enough donuts before this event to get him but spent them all on other things once I didn’t see any donut sales during the holidays. But this was to good of a sale to pass up…get him!!

For that I supposed that people who had Barney, had FREE skin of Astronaut Barney, but no. Thats a little unfair for them i think, because the most of them surely paid 250 for Barney…

Exactly! I wouldn’t complain about newer players getting the chance to buy him cheaper than I did, but they should be giving us something for having supported the game!

If you don’t have Barney, you can purchase him at 250 and get 130 back, and it includes the skin! So, 120 for Barney, the Bowlarama AND the skin… now THAT is a steal xD
The people who keep asking about the potato chips have to be trolling. That must be frustrating after all the great work you do on your write ups. They could easily take a minute of their time and Google it if they really don’t know. Thanks again for all the quick updates and information.

Didn’t think of making a print screen but for me the special Barney offer came with: Barney’s Bowlarama, Barney and Astronaut Barney. The cost was 250 donuts with a rebate of 130 donuts.
The Space Shuttle Simulator is only 75 donuts in my game.

About the floating chips- at first I thought they were leaves that just happened to look an awful lot like Ruffles potato chips (“Rrrruffles have rrrridges”). I even tried tapping on them but nothing happened. Were they supposed to be parts of the asteroid? Was my game about to self-destruct? Had I gone insane? Came here to find out what was going on…. Whew.
I don’t have Barney. My game shop only shows the space shuttle simulator for 75 donuts (no Barney) and the 130 donut rebate for the 250 donut Barney plus Bowlerama (Barney in his astronaut costume).
Does this mean the space shuttle simulator just comes with Barney’s astronaut costume (not the character)? And they’re not even offering it to me because I don’t have Barney? (I won costumes for characters I didn’t have in the Tapball event.)
Wish they had a bank that gave short-term donut loans… I’d love to get Barney but only have 160 donuts – not enough to pay the full 250 but enough to pay back a loan shark after the rebate. Can’t really expect to earn 90 donuts in two weeks.
Alternatively – they could have a currency exchange agreement with TinyCo’s Family Guy and let me convert clams to donuts. Come on, people, if realspace countries can do it, so can you!
If you don’t own barney you can buy him at the discounted rate and get the skin too but not the simulator.
Where? I only see two offers: the simulator alone at 75 donuts and astronaut Barney/bowlerama at 250 donuts (with 130 donut rebate). Don’t have 250 donuts, just 167 at the moment, and have to have the full price first. Otherwise just get the need more donuts message. So before I can get the discounted price, I have to have enough donuts for the full price. Or is there a way to get just Barney somewhere?
Barney has always been the 250 price… now he’s just a really good deal with the additional skin and the rebate.
