Halloween Event 2016 101: Crafting

Hey Howdy Hey Tappers!

Ah the long awaited, much requested, Crafting post….

Love it or hate it, EA has proven over the last couple of years that crafting is here to stay.  While the prizes themselves are pretty self explanatory, collect this to earn these prizes, crafting is a whole other “animal”.  Crafting requires some self direction.  You decide what you want and collect the items to craft accordingly.  Sometimes this is successful and sometimes it’s not. And, as with all things, for some events crafting is easier than others.

Now I know some of you still have questions about what to craft, if you should craft or Level Up, what happens in future Acts…so, as we’ve done in the past, we’re here to break it all down for you.  So let’s take a look at the basics of Crafting for the entire event.

2016-10-04-16-18-59

As always we’ll start with the basics…

When Does Crafting Start?

Crafting unlocks after you’ve completed Mad Monsters: Furry Road Pt. 5At this point you’ll get a quest called Monster Candy, started by Bart.  This will unlock the..

medievalrichhouse_menuMedieval Rich House- Free, 6×11 in size

This house unlocks the ability for Kids to Trick or Treat for Obols (the crafting currency) and Film Strips

Once you’ve completed Monster Candy you’ll unlock a quest started by Lisa called How Much is that Warewolf in the Window, this will unlock the..

medievalconstyard_menuMedieval Construction Yard- Free, 8×9 in size

The Construction Yard is what triggers crafting to unlock.

How Do I Access the Crafting Menu?

Just like every other event the Crafting Menu is accessible via the Event Hub.

ico_mhud_thoh2016_event

The purple monster like trophy is your event hub.  Click on it and you’ll access your event hub for this event.

From there you want to find the crafting Icon, third one down on the left, that looks like this:

ico_mhub_thoh2016_crafting

Tap on it and that’ll bring up your Crafting Menu (Also known as the Construction Yard):

2016-10-05-15-47-49

You can also access your Crafting Menu (the quick way) by tapping on your Construction Yard in Springfield…

When Does Crafting End?

Crafting is avaialble for the ENTIRE event.  You read that right…the ENTIRE event.  So you have until November 15th to craft everything!

Plenty of time…so take your time.

What Is the Crafting Currency?

So it’s 1 crafting currency for the ENTIRE Event.

The crafting currency for the event is Obols:

ico_cur_thoh2016_funeralcoins_lg

How Do I Earn Crafting Currency?

So as many of you have pointed out…Obols are not exactly plentiful in this event.  But keep in mind Crafting is for the ENTIRE event…so there’s no rush to craft or level up.  Build up as many Obols as you can and then craft/level up at your pace.

Are are the ways you can earn Obols in this event:

-Randomly appear when tapping Feral Monsters, along with Event Currency.
-Trick-or-Treating Tasks at the Rich House for the Kids, along with Event Currency
-Prize Tracks in the Acts
-MAG Prize Tracks

It’ll be a grind for this event…but keep at it they’ll continually build up.

What’s the Deal With the Crafting Levels?  What do They Do?  And Should I Level Up or Craft?!

2016-10-05-15-47-49

So with this update, similar to the Casino and Sci-Fi update, there are Levels for crafting.  Unlocking each level will unlock a new item to Craft.

Leveling up will cost you Obols ico_cur_thoh2016_funeralcoins_lg.  Now here’s an aspect I’m really happy they continue from Sci-Fi…you do NOT have to choose between Leveling up and Crafting.  The Obols you spend to Craft items will count towards the Obols needed to Level up! (Take note…many of you didn’t realize this during the Sci-Fi Event and therefore didn’t use your crafting currency efficiently)

What does this mean?  Well basically if it costs 600 ico_cur_thoh2016_funeralcoins_lg to move up to the next level, and you want to craft Iron Walls (which cost 20 ico_cur_thoh2016_funeralcoins_lg each)..you don’t have to decide between Leveling up and Crafting.  Simply craft the Iron Walls and 20 ico_cur_thoh2016_funeralcoins_lg will be deducted from the 600 ico_cur_thoh2016_funeralcoins_lg required to Level Up.

So you DO NOT have to decide between Leveling Up and Crafting, because you’ll Level Up WHILE you Craft!

So How Many Levels Are There?  How Many ico_cur_thoh2016_funeralcoins_lg Does It Cost to Level Up?

Currently there are 15 Levels.  Here’s a cost chart:

You start at Level 1, so that’s not included here

Some of you are confused with this chart.  This chart shows the cost to LEVEL UP, not the cost to purchase the items.  The item cost is in the breakdown below…NOT in this chart

14 630ico_cur_thoh2016_funeralcoins_lg Haunted Stables
15 1,145ico_cur_thoh2016_funeralcoins_lg Shipwreck

Note: You’ll notice these numbers to level up are lower than they were in the Halloween is Live rundown post.  There was a recent patch that went in and adjusted the numbers…nice to see EA making things a little more doable for everyone 🙂

And no, unfortunately it’s not a running total.  You’ll need 5,200 ico_cur_thoh2016_funeralcoins_lg to level up completely.  So craft wisely my friends.

So now that we know HOW to craft let’s talk about what you can craft and the items details for each…starting with Level 1..

My Personal Opinion on Craftables…
Don’t kill yourself.  Most of this stuff is just decorations and really unimpressive.  (Shipwreck is a bit of a letdown)  Craft what you like/think you can use in your town…but really nothing is worth kill yourself over.
Best item?  Probably the Catacombs, since it earns income and comes with a task for Bart.
Beyond the Catacombs I would say the Pyre and Bats are the next two fun ones.  Everything else, to me anyway, is meh.

So again…don’t kill yourself trying to get all this stuff.  Sometimes less is more. Craft what you have use for in Springfield….don’t think you have to get the Shipwreck because it’s the last item, so therefore it’s the best.  Because it’s really not.

Hope that helps some of you who have been stressing out over crafting!

And there you have it my friends…the details behind Halloween 2016 Crafting!

  1. If anyone’s looking to maximize the bang for their buck (i.e. MAG points / Obol spent), I put this Google sheet together:
    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1inblhTpeSbNBbrw2GeXfAdC53K-5RManBAiy9Ts3MOs/edit?usp=sharing

The ability to edit is restricted to me, but commenting is open to anyone with the link.

And mods, feel free to delete this post for any reason. Or just let me know if you’d like Edit access. 🙂

    • Thanks for that!

    • Awesome. Thanks so much! This is very helpful.

Have you done the math on the most efficient purchase path to make you way through leveling up (while also trying to make the most purchases those that earn MAG points)? I’d be interested in finding out what the best purchase(s) is/are at each level.

  2. I can’t wait to get the shipwreck! I’m currently 400/700 for that Cave. Which is going to go next to that other cave from the Wild West Event. They match perfectly!

  3. OMGosh this is the post from hell…o…halloween 😀

Craft what you want when you want.
    Tapparently like a touk ♡

  4. Weird trick or glitch, I’m not sure:

I built four pyres, the limit for MAG points but I didn’t have a place for all of them so I stored them. When they were placed in my town I could no longer earn MAG points, but when I stored them, I can earn more. I took them in and out of inventory several times and that seems to be the trick every time! I haven’t seen this posted so I thought I would share! Thanks!!

    • Hmmm…I tried. When I store them, or any item I’ve maxed MAG points on, the crafting menu says I can earn more MAG points for those items. But crafting and placing more earned nothing. So, at least in my game, it’s just a text glitch. Doesn’t get me any more MAG points.

    • Anyhow the pyres are a poor return on mag points for obols spent. So no loss there.

  5. Anybody else having problems getting their gate to line up with the fence pieces?

    • I had mine tight to the MAG tower and had to expand to make it fit.

    • I rotate the fences and the gate was perfect

    • No. Did you try rotating either the gate or fence pieces around 180 degrees?

    • Make sure the rotation is the same on both’ – most fences will have 4 rotation options, a left, right, top and bottom, to give them ambiguous names

    • Yep! I was one short to complete my rectangle surrounding a building and crafted one more piece even though it didn’t earn MAG points, and it didn’t fit! I don’t want to flip all the pieces because they but up against the road like they should. Frustrating!

  6. My plan for the shipwreck is to place it close to my pirate ship which is anchored on the beach. Sort of like it is the ghost of the wrecked ship.

    • Awww…now you went and gave me a reason to take a second look at it. I was all set to pass on it, but it would go well with the ghost ship….

  7. I too have noticed that once you reach certain levels you cant craft anything to get more MAG points/points to get to the next level in crafting. If you do the math EA you would of said oops. Personally I think they did this so we would spend donuts to either get prizes or to buy something in the store to get more points. This erks me off bad. But hey they need funds to keep this all up I guess. So I would rather see them keep going then hord my donuts.
My thought process is that if they had done something extra for those levels we get stuck on it wouldn’t be so bad.
I do like the new system of crafting to level up. I didnt really get / comprehend all of it in the sci fi event. But i do like it, it just needs some tweeking. This is just my two cents for what its worth.

    • “I too have noticed that once you reach certain levels you cant craft anything to get more MAG points/points to get to the next level in crafting. If you do the math EA you would of said oops.”
You can also earn MAG points via collecting the event currency (film strips in Act 1, clapboards in Act 2). For example, the Covered Bridge (Prize #4) will earn me 225 MAG points.

  8. im crafting for the MAG points, most of the stuff will end up in storage afterwards anyways. might keep the bonfires out.

  9. No ones talking about the new Gil deal. Am I the only one? It’s 170 doughnuts for the creature from the black lagoon (with three eyes like Blinky) and swamp bundle.

    • Yea I’ll be posting about it Monday…

      • Yea! Sushi Monday!

      • Oh. I got the deal this morning. I’m surprised no one else is asking about it. FYI: I bought the “deal”. I don’t think it’s a very good deal. Very pricey for what it is. Th swamp doesn’t seem to do anything. It’s nice to get another character, but that’s the only good thing I have to say about it.

        • Lindsay Mossotti

What are the outdoor tasks? How big is the character?

        • IMHO, it seems like all the good stuff, lately, are quite pricey. I can’t afford to buy donuts anymore, so I get them slowly by grinding, which is becoming a chore…LOL. This means I have to pass up quite a few things I would’ve like to have had in my Springfield. Ah, well.

      • Tracy - 1ltwoody920

I’m not looking at my game at the moment….
I hope that the offer doesn’t expire on Sunday 😱
        (I’m leaving now)

    • I got him. He helps fight monsters. I was worried that the swamp was going to be gigantic, but it’s not that big (10×11).
He has a questline and some outdoor tasks, but his first questline task was an indoor one for 8 hours, so I haven’t seen him since I got him. Didn’t need him for a monster fight, so figured I’d at least get started on the questline.
All of his tasks are unlocked from the start, so if the quest tasks get long, I’m going to hold off on them until Halloween is over.

    • It is Blinky 🐟🐟🐟

    • I’m doing the usual, ignoring Gil so he follows me all around town,
      🎃 😃 🇬🇧

  10. I was confused by the mag points myself. if an item no longer gives mag points and you craft it , it will still give you points towards leveling crafting . ex My 4th fire didn’t give mag points but still leveled my crafting bar. Crafted a bunch of unwanted st lights b4 i realized 😑

  11. I’ve found that for every 40 feral monster taps I get about 4 obols… is that normal?!?!?

Sooooo frustrating! Anyone getting more? Should I contact EA?

    • They are pretty stingy with them…. If you let the ferals build up to overflowing, you at least have the illusion of getting more coins. It takes several ferals poofed before I finally get a coin out of one of them. All my ferals seem to have just evolved to the winged kind, which makes it go faster with poof, poof.

  12. 4kidsandacatdog

The shipwreck goes on water…any water? Or just the ocean?

  13. I hope I get enough for the shipwreck, it is the only item I want. I have some of the other items from the previous events.

  14. okay.. I’m confused by this…

I have been crafting only things that return mag points when placed.
I’m on Level 9 or the construction yard and 20 more to reach level 10

I’ve crafter everything that gives me mag points that is available.

Been sending everyone on trick&treating tasks and fighting monsters as often as I can….

How the heck do I get to level 10 w/o having to spend 20 coins to do it?

    • You can still craft items even if you reached the point that you no longer get MAG points for them. Just craft another item that costs 20 obols like a fence section.

    • You can keep collecting currency until one of the prizes – Bell Tower earned 270, Burns’ Family Crypt earned 180, etc. I’m sure the addicts will have the new prize amounts up soon!

  15. I have reached a point where I cannot level up crafting by crafting. I needed 10 more points to get to the cave. Now I can buy the cave and get 315 points, but I need 490 to get to the level after that. It is disappointing to get to this point and see no path forward except to “waste” points on leveling.

  16. I’m glad that the hardest to get item is a dud…I definitely won’t be getting the shipwreck. The waters in my town are already full of beach resorts and private islands, which at least give an XP bonus.

  17. TechnoTrousers0

I have to say the crafting is a little lackluster this time around, though I admit we got spoiled by being able to craft dozens of wailing walls for an ongoing bonus percentage last year. I guess this year I’ll focus on crafting currency earning items at the end. Spooky house farm, anyone? 🙂

Thanks for the heads up on the shipwreck. I’m not crafting a lame decoration for 1,000 obols when I can get dozens of paying houses.

  18. Thanks for posting, there is so much depth and complexity to some of this. So it seems like leveling up crafting isn’t worth it as there isn’t much interesting to unlock. The rundown on MAG points suggested 1700 points are needed from crafting, so now it’s just between getting MAG points or not. Seems the reason to get MAG points would be to unlock the full Medieval Gate, does that turn into anything useful or get a bonus or just a plain decoration?

    • I think the gate is a big letdown. Afaik it’s just a decoration with an upgradeable facade. And every time I logout the facade resets to level 1 so chances are noone is gonna see it. But as a completionist I must have it, just to know that it’s there…

  19. I really like that you can now craft multiples of an item. Rather than doing something like one wall at a time your can save your obols and do a whole batch at once.

    • I love that new feature! 🙂

However, I *don’t* like the new thing of the game saying “earn MAG points for the first X you craft!” and the notification NOT going away once you’ve finished crafting the item if you put it in storage. :'( I wasted Obols on extra gargoyle walls because I thought I hadn’t reached the limit! *sigh* Alas…

So, everyone, make sure you leave those items out once you’ve crafted them!

(I mean, I would have bought more walls anyway, but not until the end -after I’d unlocked everything else I wanted…😀)

      • I had the same thing happen. Only when I got it all out of storage the message appeared. I crafted a fire or two too many and also those thorny bushes.

  20. I sometimes have a floating obol over my construction yard. It is clearly there to indicate…something. What is it trying to tell me?

    • you can craft an item

      • I thought it was to show that you have enough obols to upgrade to the next level regardless of crafting something although I don’t know why anyone would ever want to spend obols just to upgrade without crafting an item.

        • GUITARBOB- …..that too. I had a floater when I was trying to get the caves. I had to hide my construction site so that I didn’t tap it in error & lose all my Obols I’d grinded so hard to get….phew!……💜X

    • I think it means you have enough obals to level up, but as the post says don’t waste them levelling up and use them to craft.
Not sure if it is just my game but has anyone else found if you Store items you have crafted you can get mag points again (only seems to regocnise items that are in your town)?

      • I tried the vampire coffin and forest cave in my town, stored them and then returned them…no change in MAG levels with either item.
Lucky you for a beneficial glitch.

      • I noticed that as well and thought I’d get extra MAG points but it hasn’t worked that way for me.

  21. You mention EA adjusting the cost numbers – how far into the event was this done?

    • I think a week into act 1 give or take a day or 2

      • Both my husband’s and my game still have the higher prices e.g. Forest cave costs 700 Obols. There is no update in the App Store, we have shut down and re-entered the game and still no change. Are we missing something?

  22. I believe you also sometimes randomly get an obol when you complete a giant monster battle, but I’m not 100% sure on that. You can also get obols from daily tasks sometimes.

Also, the bats fly around in a circle when you tap them in addition to the regular constant animation.

  23. Castle walls,…. I have 200 in my inventory 🙁

I got briefly excited when I saw them, wondering if EA had added a bonus multiplier to them so they’d be more attractive a prize (I also have hundreds in storage). No such luck.

“Don’t kill yourself”is great advice in general LOL

  25. I really like the way crafting works now. It let’s you plan for the entire event, no more wondering if you should craft more before the end of the act then when you would see the new items, you wished you had gotten more from the previous act.
It weekdays seems impossible at first but Obols keep getting easier to accumulate. I’m almost to the Forest Cave. I can tell already by the end of the event I’ll be sitting on a pile of Obols that go to waste. The bats are cool but how many do you really need?

    • What do you mean? You can never have too many bats…. And they squeek like chew toys. Everyone likes toys that squeek !!! Just ask my cats… 😹

    • I may be wrong but not many players will be sitting on a pile of obols at the end of the event.
Only chance if EA reduce the amounts for the items & not just the levels. Maybe some day EA you will get this right from the start of an event & not have to tweak half way through.

  26. They should just get rid of the level up option all together. Spend craft currency for nothing doesn’t seem like a good option. Yet I somehow didn’t catch this myself in the Sci-Fi event and only got to craft like 4 building.

    • The reason for the craft level up button is some people don’t want to fabricate anything more than the MAG point earning item, due to most crafting items being unable to be sold. I have more than enough vanity points and tree hugging points to keep my stars maxed. I have too many things in my inventory as it is that will likely never see the light of day again that I can’t get rid of. My Springfield ain’t pretty, but it gets the job done for me and my neighboreenos.

  27. Thank you for this very helpful post! I was so glad to see the Bramble Hedge is available from last year. I enjoy using them as a fence in various areas of town.

  28. Anyone else find it a bit odd that EA shows the windmill in the graphic but none is found in the prizes?

  29. If your goal is to get all the crafting items, then you need to focus on crafting things which give MAG points, and ignore the others for the time being. The reason is that upgrading your MAG level unlocks more trick-or-treaters, which will earn you more obols.

    • Exactly my strategy and it seems to be working

    • Kinda crummy that the more expensive the item is, the less it pays in MAG points, percentage wise. I agree with your premise to craft MAG items first, but it becomes difficult when you get to items that are 700 obols. I decided to treat these items as partial donut purchases rather than trying to amass 700 obols…when I got to 400 something obols, I paid the balance in donuts( 40ish, I think) and moved on. This idea may not be acceptable for all players, but it is an option for those who don’t want to spend 5 days waiting on one item.

      • LOL… There are loads of ways to play the game, for sure. But as the old saying goes, “patience is a virtue…or at least costs you fewer donuts.”

    • My strategy also. Currently crafting lvl 11 and Mag track already at 17. Which means all 10 ToT’s! If any of you got there yet: when I placed the forest cave it upgraded the Mag track from halfway lvl 16 to halfway lvl 18 but I never got the 200 Obols prize — “only” the ToT job. Maybe a bug?!?
And the Medieval Gate upgrades are a big letdown. Plus the facade always resets to the lowest level whenever I logout. Same as for the superhero mansion, that facade is also always at the lowest level no matter how often I change it to “both wings”…

      • The problem with the summer mansion and the fancy thing with a Ferris wheel from the casino event (and maybe now the gate) defaulting back to the first level has been traced to the chili pot game (tapping turtles). Try it to see if it’s true for the gate – don’t play the game, they all stay put. Do play the game, and you have to reset them. Check the gate right before you play and then right after. In any case, e-mail EA about it. We’ve been waiting for a chili game fix for quite a while.

  30. “So for the first time you do not have to decide between levelling up and crafting.” Um by this point in the post it would be for the second time, as it was the second time it was mentioned, and the second event, if it was realized the first time it happened 😉 Just sayin 😀
