THOH Quick Tip: Making the Most of the Hunting Nightmares Task

UPDATE: Looks like EA lowered the time for the Hunt Nightmares task.  It’s now been reduced to 4hrs from 8hrs.  So you should earn twice as many each day.  This will be a big help for many of you worrying about just how you’ll earn the 9,000+ Candy Apples for Act 3.

Hey Howdy Hey Tappers!

Just popping in with a quick tip for earning more nightmares via the Hunting Nightmares Task.  We’re seeing loads of you in the comments upset because you’ll send all your kids to Hunt Nightmares, and it’ll only yield 20 when the task is complete.

So why is that?  Well it’s because the max in your town allowed at one time is 20.  Now there’s been a bank of 40 throughout the entire event (that your nightmares will appear from when you clear the first 20), but it appears that..at least for now..the bank isn’t working with the Hunt Nightmares task.

So how to we optimize and get the most out of the task to yield the most Candy Apples?  Let’s take a look….

Here’s the key to maximize the most out of this task….

Multiple Brown Houses

The Simpsons Tapped Out Brown House

Since the task takes place at the Brown House, the best thing is to have multiple Brown Houses in your town.  Then send various characters to perform the task at different Brown Houses.  Count up how many nightmares the characters will yield and don’t have more than a yield of 20 from any of the houses.

Then clear each house one at a time, clear the nightmares that spawn & reassign the kids to the Hunt Nightmares task at that house.

Basically…if you have ALL of the kids (or almost all of the kids) you’ll need 4 Brown Houses to maximize the Nightmare spawns….here’s a look for each one:

Brown House #1- Yields 20 Skeleton Nightmares: Bart (2), Database (2), Gino (4), Sherri and Terri (8) & Laura (4).

Brown House #2- Yields 20 Bunny Nightmares: Milhouse (2), Ralph (2), Rod (2) , Todd (2) , Shawna (4), Jessica (4)  and Uter (4).

Brown House #3- Yields 20 Zombie Nightmares: Martin (2), Michael (2), Kearney (4), Greta (4), Jimbo (4) and Squeaky Voiced Teen (4).

Brown House #4– Yields 10 Snake Nightmares: Lisa (2), Hugo (2), Nelson (2), Dolph (2) and Janey (2).

So when they’re ready clear the thumbs up over Brown House #1, then clear the skeletons that spawn from it, then reassign the kids to the task and move onto Brown House #2.

Repeat for each Brown House.

Important….Space your Brown Houses apart OR store your IRS building so you don’t accidentally clear them all at once.  This will only work if you clear 1 brown house at a time.

This will help you complete maximize how many nightmares you’ll get from doing the task….

Hopefully this will help many of you clear up the issues of nightmares not appearing when you clear the Brown House and help you maximize your Candy Apple earnings for Act 3!

What are your thoughts on this strategy?  Have you been doing this or sending them all to the same Brown House?  Think this will help you earn more Candy Apples?  Sound off in the comments below, you know we love hearing from you!

  1. Would I even have known the brown house was involved in this event if I hadn’t come here? Does EA expect clairvoyance?

  2. Hey, the kids are now propagating terrors every 4 hours, not 8. That makes way more sense.

  3. Is there supposed to be an icon in the task bar to let you know to send kids to hunt nightmares? I finished the first round but after that there was nothing. (I did tap on a brown house and the tasks were there.) So wer’e supposed to automatically know to tap on a brown house? Thanks .

    • Nope no task after the one from the main questline. And yup, you’re just supposed to tap the brown house. Like you had to tap the campfire or had to tap the Simpson house, Moe’s, Kwik-E-Mart or Krusty Burger in the previous 2 acts. It’s not a new thing…just a new location. And by completing the questline it shows you where you need to go to do the task…

  4. I apologize if this has already been mentioned, but I just noticed my brown house/hunt nightmares task is now 4 hours. This will help with the candy apple totals. 🙂

  5. do any of you actually read the post before commenting?? geeeez!!

  6. Did the task time change, or is something weird going on? I am pretty sure I didn’t send the kids to hunt nightmares until after work, and now they’ve got less than fifteen minutes left, and I only got home from work about four hours ago…

  7. In my game, the hunt nightmares task has been changed to 4 hours duration instead of 8 hours, which is was previously.

  8. Good grief I love you people. What a great idea! I was going to stagger times, but that does require more effort to remember when you have to collect. This solution is simple and elegant. Thank you!

  9. I can’t get bunnies from the brown house or the gateway to nowhere. So much for the House of Evil challenges.

  10. Just seen a rumour that the reset clock on the sunken temple is only running at about 85% of the speed that it should ……someone who sets their alarm to play can investigate, “Come Watson; The game is afoot!”

    🏈 🕑 🕑 🕑 🕑 🕖 🕖 🕖 🕖 🍩🍩🍩 🙂

    • You don’t have to set alarms, you can just watch the timer tick down for about ten seconds. It stutters badly, which would add quite a lot of time over twelve hours.

      • I saw this. I started my kids in the brown house when it was an 8hr task. Mnster also went to the temple at about the same time. I was late getting to the kids but it showed mnster had 4hrs 1min left, so I split up my kids between 4 houses and figured theyd finish at the same time. I checked in and the kids had 1hr 30 while mnster was running slow at 1hr 45. I don’ t know if that equates to 85% but mnstr is definitely running slow.

  11. Nice one Alissa ♡

  12. Brilliant advice I wish I had thought of myself.

  13. When m’nsther comes back, will 4 main kids have to go fight him again? Should they be in they’re own house?

    • only those 4 can fight him. You can put them however you want…

    • Yeah, I love the Addicts’ idea of having four houses, one for each nightmare hunting kid-type, and I’ve already implemented it in my town*, but I was just thinking about it, and came here to post, I’ll be running a fifth Brown House for the four fighting children: Bart, Lisa, Milhouse, and Martin. Since they occasionally need to fight M’nthster, being able to jailbreak them from Nightmare Hunting as needed, without disturbing the other childrens’ quest, will come in handy.

      * Silly me for having a maxed IRS building, I had to place my four houses REALLY far apart. LOL

      • That’s a spectacular idea!

      • Great idea – I did the same thing. Lisa in particular is really important to have in a building you can store because there is no other way to reset her. I’m also juggling my Railyard recycling to get the 5 bonuts there this week. So using a brown house to “store” the ones you know you’re going to need again is brill!

  14. I’ve been doing this just because I wanted to have a house for zombies, a house for bunnies, etc. Glad to know it’s a good strategy and not just some weird compulsion of mine.

  15. Thanks for the advice

  16. An addition to this. If you have the IRS building and have expended money to extend your reach, place your brown house far enough apart to so you don’t activate more than one at a time.

  17. Crap , why didn’t I think of that ?
Double crap , why didn’t I wait another half hour before sending the kids to hunt nightmares in the same house ?
    Thanks Alissa , I’ll catch up , tomorrow’s another day…’ 🙂

  18. One tip (learned this the hard way), make sure your Brown Houses are spread far enough apart that they don’t all pop at once due to the wide tapping radius (from the IRS collection upgrade). I had 3-houses next to each other, with 20, 20, 10 respectively, but tapping on the one house released all three, so only 20 nightmeres appeared (ie-lost 30). I’ve since spread them around town – tap 1 then clear the nightmeres, then the 2nd, and so forth. Thanks TSTO-Addicts for all you do!!!

  19. Great Pro-Tip. Thanks!

  20. Yes, I worked this out and commented earlier, ….the important thing is to release them at the end of their task SEPARATELY…… release zombies, and tap them all…then release Bunnies, and tap them all, then snakes, and tap them all etc. (order doesn’t matter) but if you only use one house ……you’ll be releasing more than 20 (mixed nightmares) and you’ll lose some because you can’t have more than 20

So you need 4 parties, ….in 4 houses,….and you must release the kids, and tap their nightmares one house at a time, or risk losing some of your nightmares 🐇 🐍 👻 💀 🏈 💥 🔥 🎆 🎇 🎆 🍩🍩🍩
    🙂

  21. Could you also do it by timing? Like every hour send kids to spawn 20 nightmares. I’m not sure how to send the kids to a “specific” Brown house – it seems like all of mine just went to one (although if I click on other Brown houses, they all seem to be there as well… Might need to spread Brown houses out or the large clickable radius will get multiple houses at once.

    • You tap on the individual Brown Houses and only send a select few kids to that house. Each house will have different kids at it.

You could stagger them, but you just have to watch your timing. Don’t let them double up or it won’t work..

  22. Thanks for the tip, I never would have thought to do that on my own. On a side note, just realized, the Homer Holiday costume says that it helps with the Halloween task. Umm Adults collecting is over now, is it not? (or did I totally miss something somewhere along one of the blogs) LOL so that scripture is kinda pointless.

  23. I actually just started that part and sent all my kids to one house.

I’ll just store it and follow your advice (even if that means having more than 1 brown house, which I hate).

  24. I would also add that, if you aren’t staggering the times you send each group of kids earning 20 nightmares, you should be sure that the brown houses you are using are spaced decently far apart or that you store your IRS building so that you don’t accidentally tap more than one at a time. Happy tapping!

  25. Isn’t that just the same as doing it in the same house

    • No. Because when it’s in the same house and you clear it you’re only going to get 20 nightmares at most. By putting them in different houses you’ll maximize what you get and none will go to waste

  26. Thanks for the advice. Wish I had read this before sending all the kids to one brown house. Hopefully I can tap out a few right away, tap the nightmares that spawn, then tap out the others and their nightmares.

    • Just store your brown house and then do as they advise. Unless they’re really close to being finished

    • I just now stored the Brown House where all of them had been — including my Fighting Four (heh) — so that I could have the four fight M’nsther and split the others up between four separate Brown Houses. It’ll set me back two hours, but I’ll make that back by having all the kids (other than the Four and Gino, who I didn’t get) generating their individual Nightmares.

I do notice I’m getting far fewer Shoggoths — I’m sorry, “Formless Horrors” — than the previous two acts, though. But since I’m not that worried about crafting at this point, no big deal.

  27. If you send all of your kids to 1 Brown House, they’ll only give you 20 nightmares still? Yikes! Have to start dividing them up now. Thanks for the tip!

  28. I don’t understand how you split them up… all of my kids tend to go to the same house

  29. CapitalCityGoofball

Thanks for the tip! Just thought of another for this – make sure the houses aren’t too close when clearing, or else the IRS radius will negate this strategy! 😊

  30. That would work or… Just don’t send all the kiddos at the same time?

Stagger them a few minutes (or more?) apart, and just catch the nightmares before triggering the next one???

    >

    • Yup that works to just have to watch your complete times and make sure you go back in your game work enough time

      • Not only do you have to log in at exactly the right time like Alissa said, if you stagger them, say every five minutes, you’re then committed to staying logged in a full twenty minutes to collect and reset. Some players probably can’t commit to multiple check-ins that long, in addition to the amount of time it takes to manage all the other characters in town. When you’ve been playing long enough and have 80 characters NOT participating in the event that you still have to reset at least once a day (and the Unemployment Office only helps with 40!), even a simple reset takes awhile. And speaking for myself, I’ve got things to do that don’t involve spending hours tap-tap-tapping. Love playing, but this is strictly entertainment only. As soon as it stops being more chore than fun, I’m out.

I just got done setting up my multiple brown houses and was all set to share the tip, but as usual the Addicts are on it! Well done all. I put mine in the middle of a few empty patches of land so IRS won’t get them, plus when the Nightmares spawn they’re pretty well collected in a single area without any other buildings or characters interfering.

    • Staggering them in the same house only works if you come back in time. If you are late, they all harvest at the same time. If the IRS function is turned, be sure the houses are far enough apart not to trigger simultaneously.
