THOH Quick Tip: Making the Most of the Hunting Nightmares Task

UPDATE: Looks like EA lowered the time for the Hunt Nightmares task.  It’s now been reduced to 4hrs from 8hrs.  So you should earn twice as many each day.  This will be a big help for many of you worrying about just how you’ll earn the 9,000+ Candy Apples for Act 3.

Hey Howdy Hey Tappers!

Just popping in with a quick tip for earning more nightmares via the Hunting Nightmares Task.  We’re seeing loads of you in the comments upset because you’ll send all your kids to Hunt Nightmares, and it’ll only yield 20 when the task is complete.

So why is that?  Well it’s because the max in your town allowed at one time is 20.  Now there’s been a bank of 40 throughout the entire event (that your nightmares will appear from when you clear the first 20), but it appears that..at least for now..the bank isn’t working with the Hunt Nightmares task.

So how to we optimize and get the most out of the task to yield the most Candy Apples?  Let’s take a look….

Here’s the key to maximize the most out of this task….

Multiple Brown Houses

The Simpsons Tapped Out Brown House

Since the task takes place at the Brown House, the best thing is to have multiple Brown Houses in your town.  Then send various characters to perform the task at different Brown Houses.  Count up how many nightmares the characters will yield and don’t have more than a yield of 20 from any of the houses.

Then clear each house one at a time, clear the nightmares that spawn & reassign the kids to the Hunt Nightmares task at that house.

Basically…if you have ALL of the kids (or almost all of the kids) you’ll need 4 Brown Houses to maximize the Nightmare spawns….here’s a look for each one:

Brown House #1- Yields 20 Skeleton Nightmares: Bart (2), Database (2), Gino (4), Sherri and Terri (8) & Laura (4).

Brown House #2- Yields 20 Bunny Nightmares: Milhouse (2), Ralph (2), Rod (2) , Todd (2) , Shawna (4), Jessica (4)  and Uter (4).

Brown House #3- Yields 20 Zombie Nightmares: Martin (2), Michael (2), Kearney (4), Greta (4), Jimbo (4) and Squeaky Voiced Teen (4).

Brown House #4– Yields 10 Snake Nightmares: Lisa (2), Hugo (2), Nelson (2), Dolph (2) and Janey (2).

So when they’re ready clear the thumbs up over Brown House #1, then clear the skeletons that spawn from it, then reassign the kids to the task and move onto Brown House #2.

Repeat for each Brown House.

Important….Space your Brown Houses apart OR store your IRS building so you don’t accidentally clear them all at once.  This will only work if you clear 1 brown house at a time.

This will help you complete maximize how many nightmares you’ll get from doing the task….

Hopefully this will help many of you clear up the issues of nightmares not appearing when you clear the Brown House and help you maximize your Candy Apple earnings for Act 3!

What are your thoughts on this strategy?  Have you been doing this or sending them all to the same Brown House?  Think this will help you earn more Candy Apples?  Sound off in the comments below, you know we love hearing from you!

  1. I’m not getting bunnies from the portal or my kids performing tasks! Am I the only one?

    • I’m having the same issue, in fact I even tried splitting my kids up into the four houses and released them separately and TOTAL only got two skeletons and two snakes from all of them! Not cool!

      • They tend to appear in different areas of your town, so you may have to search for them

        • I’m not too sure about that. I tapped my brown house with snakes and after finding four I looked or stayed still almost twenty minutes waiting for them to find me because they were supposed to be there and I wanted to get to my other houses. I know my town was empty of any others. I’m having the same problem with skeletons. There were zombies and bunnies everywhere with the last two houses though.

How come you haven’t had that baby yet? And are you as tired hearing that question as you are about all the others you get here? LOL

          • I haven’t had the baby because my child knows the readers of this site can’t survive without me telling them all day every day how to play their games during this event….i’m convinced this child will come once halloween is over so people won’t freak out.

    • No, you’re not, I have the same problem, no bunnies whatsoever! 🙁

    • I’m only getting zombies and snakes it seems.

  2. Shhhhhhh… Be Vewwy Vewwy Quiet, I’m Hunting Nightmare Bunnies; It’s Nightmare Bunny Season

  3. How are we supposed to get 9000 apples in 11 more days? We can’t get much more than 100 a day from the kids, plus the 100 or so bonus each day. I’m at around 1200 apples now because of the quest payouts, but I don’t see how I can get more than a couple hundred apples a day from now on. I’m a regular player, and got all the prizes in act 2 with like 4 days left. This is even worse than the Easter wheel a couple years ago!!!

    • I suggest reserving judgement until closer to the end… everybody says stuff like this at the beginning of an act, but then, as if by miracle, most make it to the final prize just fine (except, perhaps, for low-level players, players without neighbors, and/or players who aren’t willing/able to tap a few times a day.

      • Yeah but in most other events there are ways to gradually get more as the event goes on. In this act 3 you can only get apples at a fixed rate and the maths just does not work out.

    • Don’t forget 100 every 12 hours from defeating M’nthster on the … on the … thingy. I’m too tired to remember what it’s called. The thing that sinks into the water after you battle him. lol. It still doesn’t add up to Bunny’s 773 a day, but maybe EA has something up its sleeve for later. (Also, Sandra is correct–every event I’ve seen this year I’ve been able to get all the prizes.)

    • Might depend on how many premium kids you have, but I just unlocked Holiday Homer, and I haven’t even been sending all my kids to hunt nightmares. (I don’t have any use for skeletons. Crafted several biohazard walls for my prison and still have thousands of bones, so skeleton-generating kids have gone back to their normal routines.) I don’t think it’s going to be a problem if I keep up the pace. That said, if you don’t have many premium kids, it might be slower going. How many premium kids do you have?

(Also, no way this is worse than Easter. I’ve already gotten more prizes from this event than I managed to scrape together from that trauma-conga of an event. In fact, the pink Easter bunnies being acknowledged as a “nightmare” this event might be my favorite thing about it. That and all the Elder god balloons and temple/tower combo looking so cool.)

    • I’m only up to level 40 and I’ve got 2000 already…

  4. Not quite sure what happened in my game, but my m’nthster was on top of the water castle at which time I was supposed to tap him 10 times to make it sink again. I guess there is glitch, and I was able to tap him as many times as I wanted and earned the rest of act 3 prizes within a minute. My game is still stuck in that reddish hue with the m’nthster on top of the castle. Did this happen to anyone else?

  5. Do we know if Star Spawn rate is fixed or determined? I get so dang many that I wonder if it’s not tied to campfire level.

  6. I know the admin frowns upon spending donuts to rush things BUT…. :p

When sending the four fighters (B.L.M. And M.) I spend two donuts on C.W. Bart (which rushes him and results with 3 damage points on the Campfire Monster), I then send Bart Back to fight. Four Hours Later all 4 kids (plus Bart’s earlier attack) Sends the Monster running to the Sunken Castle [by rushing only Bart, saves me 4hrs]

Now I could just wait the extra 4hours but I figure I’d rather utilize that time Hunting Nightmares. :p

  7. I love this website for all its pointers and suggestions!

1 question: Campfire says “Upgrading the campfire will spawn nightmares quicker!” Now that the nightmares don’t spawn from campfire, does leveling up the campfire help in anyway?

  8. couple quick observations/questions:

is it possible that nightmares are worth 5 apples now? Mnster just rose from the temple and after clearing all the nightmares and putting the kids in the fight and the rest in their respective brown houses, I noticed I had accrued over 400 apples. I am not sure of how many exactly but I know I got 50 from tapping on mnster over the tower and 100 from daily bonus. I should spawn 46 nightmares based on which kids I have and so the remainder was about 250 apples for 46 nightmares, or about 5 apples/nightmare? is this possible or did I miss something?

Also this whole 4 house thing might be unnecessary as I believe the banking is working again. I had bunnies and skeletons in the same house by accident. when I went to get zombies they didn’t show up immediately. when I went to clear snakes, there were the zombies. cleared them and waited for a little bit and snakes were a no show. Closed the game, rebooted the game and after a short pause, there were the snakes all huddled in a mass around the campfire. 1 tap, all gone.

  9. Common sense…. not so common. Definitely never thought of this.

  10. How sad that EA undercut you with that update. Very good tip, though. I didn’t even realize that I might have been getting gypped. (Only by 5 or 10, mind you.)

  11. When I tap on a Brown House, above the character task list it says “Hunt Nightmares at Krusty Murder”. I tap on Krusty Murder and the tasks there are still ‘Play with Food’. Glitch? Or upcoming tasks?

  12. Here’s a question: Anyone know what the Star Spawn spawn rate is based on? Might it not be your campfire level? Mine’s upgraded pretty high, and I’m getting a lot of Star Spawn.

  13. Did Act 3 double the bonus multiplier? Last I checked I was at 30 and now I’m at 60. I noticed it after I crafted about 10 wailing walls and around 15 spooky walls, but those are only .05% and it doesn’t say anything about wailing walls. I’ve got a list of bonus increasing items, but I haven’t added up everything in my town. I hope this is where I’m really at. I’m enjoying all the extra cash.

  14. Wow, I can’t believe the redundancy in questions here! I hope what I’m asking has not been mentioned before. I hear you loud and clear on the above (unfortunate but oh well), but I may be experiencing issues beyond this. When I last cleared my brown house for nightmare hunting, I distinctly saw and squished 2 skeletons (despite only 20 nightmares spawning) and yet my ‘camp fire upgrade’ counter is still frozen at 183. Am I not to assume if the skeletons being squished was not realized in one aspect of the game, that I did not receive candy apples for them either? With the slower rate of spawning, it would be unfortunate if some of those nightmares aren’t actually collecting either. Any insight into this?

  15. Thank you so much for this idea. And thanks to my IRS radius, it looks like the elites in Springfield Heights are about to get a very ugly neighbor.

  16. Thank you for all the great information. Don’t know what I would do if not for tstoaddicts website. I stored my IRS building as suggested in order to do one brown house at a time.

  17. I suppose that the above method is one way of doing things, I had to date been sending all my kids to one brown house and the collecting them all at once. The nightmares that don’t spawn immediately spawn over time shortly after tapping on the one brown house somewhere in my town like in Acts 1 and 2. So the end result is the same. But I like the idea of putting the like-nightmare producing kids together in separate houses for orders sake.

    • I definitely see the change in subsequent spawning – it doesn’t happen. 20 spit out regardless of how many kids were there and there are no other nightmares in my town anywhere.

    • My experience has been the same. When I send all together, I appear to be getting all the nightmares, 20 at first, then the rest spawn and walk around town. However, I did set up 4 brown houses as suggested in the hopes it make collecting a little quicker so I don’t have to try and find the nightmares wandering the town. Thanks TSTO addicts for the continued great information sharing!

    • the idea is because, as she mentioned in the post, the bank for nightmares that existed in acts 1 and 2 doesn’t appear to exist in act 3. but what you’re saying that your bank for nightmares is still working, huh?

  18. Thank goodness for this website…if not for it and the plethora of information about glitches and work-arounds, I would have quit the game a long time ago out of frustration. Thank you for all you do! (EA should give you a kick-back!)

  19. Glad they shortened the time.

  20. And how am i supposed to upgrade my campfire if I need 200 skeletons and I only have Bart to spawn skeletons at a rate of 2 every 4 hours?? All the time I spent on upgrading it before is worthless now…I don’t have donuts to spend on characters

    • Well…the time you spent isn’t worthless. It was beneficial for you for Act 1 and 2. And not all the characters that spawn skeletons are premium. Besides Bart, Database will also spawn them. But if you’re not quite there yet level wise…you can only use Bart. And yes it will take you a while to get there. You can try visiting neighbors and see who has skeletons and tap them (only if you haven’t maxed out your actions yet), that will help you upgrade as well.

      • This! Just because it may not be helpful now doesn’t mean it wasn’t helpful *then,* and if it was helpful before, then it wasn’t wasted!

  21. Thanks for the tip!!!!! 😀

  22. how do you know which brown house is #1, #2, #3, #4?

  23. Is he level off te Campfire still Doing someting?
Or is it not relevant to update?

  24. Is anyone else having problems with locating the nightmares? Mine never spawn anywhere near the brown house I send the kids to, but in a completely different part of town.

    • Check by the campfire, that’s where I usually find mine…

    • I’ve only cleared three sets of kids (they were within about five minutes of each other, so I cleared one set, and then cleared their nightmares; then I cleared the second se, and cleared their nightmares; then I cleared the final set and their nightmares), but all three times, my nightmares appeared in the top left corner of my Springfield. I happen to have another brown house there, but I think that’s just a coincidence. And that location is nowhere near my campfire, so Alissa and I are different in that regard. I look forward to seeing where my next set appears!

    • Mine spawn on the road near the brown houses (I have 2 out.) They’re very close by.

    • Mine never are anywhere near the houses they spawn from or the campfire, just radommly spread out through my town.

  25. Kind of on the same problem, I have been watching bunny ears go to my Champion cup since Act 3 started. The only time I see the bunny ears add up is when I’m am tapping on them visiting neighbors.
NVER see the count go up while I am at my own screen…
Anyone else have this happen or did I miss read somewhat that was been posted?
    Thanks!
    MArk

  26. I’m not sure I understand your strategy. Why wouldn’t we want to send all of the kids to one house? Why four houses?

    • Because, as the post says, when you send and clear them from 1 house at the same time you’ll only get 20 nightmares to appear…which means (if you have all the characters) you could be missing up to 50 nightmares from the task. By separating them you can clear 20 at a time and you won’t miss any…

  27. Everything got too complicated. This is (for me) supposed to b a game I play in the mean time. Good luck, and good riddance.

  28. really unrelated, but is it only me?
I think that either character costumes or building skins should be set up from the inventory/edit mode, instead of doing so from the game itself? It was a “nightmare” to leave moe’s bar, krusty burger, kwik-e-mart and simpson’s house as “halloween themed” without changing it by mistake when sending adults to harvest gummies. (same happens with every building that has christmas skin)

  29. Thanks for this tip! 🙂 I don’t have nearly as many kids so 2 brown houses are enough. Fastest house build ever!

  30. I may be seeing things. My task for the kids at the brown house is only 4 hours now. Did I miss a patch ?
