Friday Filler – Routines In Chaos to Conform or Rebel

Thank Grog It’s Firday!

I don’t know about you, but the biggest enemy for me during this pandemic panic isn’t the pandemic, but trying to find a way to adhere to staying home, when “home” is still in a state of perpetual chaos.

There is something weirdly comforting to being forced to play TSTO while the world breaks down around us.  I admit to not caring much for this mini-update…and yet, I am playing it, mostly out of habit and duty.  I am addicted enough, even at this level of “meh,” to log on and “do the stuff.” But, I also feel some “sense of duty and gratitude” that EA is still acting as if nothing is happening out there. TSTO is there. And, playing it isn’t that hard to do…and ignoring it would make me feel like a scofflaw.

I love that word. It’s an old word, but not as old as it sounds.  Unlike TSTO…which in game terms, is way older than you would think it is. The game is showing its age, just as this new state of normal is revealing cracks in our systems and personal abilities to do the right thing.

But, what is doing the right thing in this situation?  Do you conform? Or do you rebel, and simply not do the things that you are asked to do?  When do you become a TSTO or social human scofflaw?

Friday Filler – Getting Back to Normal…Mostly

Thank Grog It’s Firday!!

So, today, in Oregon (the State of the REAL SPRINGFIELD) we began Phase One of the “Covid Re-Opening” plan.  We were able to do so, because in Lane County (which is also the home county to the REAL SPRINGFIELD), our numbers have been so low, as to be almost negligible.  But, this isn’t about that particular “Getting Back to Normal…Mostly.”

No. Believe it or not, this is actually about “Getting Back to Normal” in TSTO…mostly.

Because, the fact is, during all of this recent Covid Craziness (and the most recent “TSTO Event”), the game just kept being the game.  Same routines. Same results. Same minor distractions. Same kinds of SNAFUs (which stands for Situation Normal All F’d Up), and is an old military term.  If you don’t believe in military SNAFU’s…then just wait until the military is in charge of doing the vaccines.  But, I digress…

The fact is…when you look at our Springfields, almost NOTHING has changed, except for a little more (a lot more?) clutter added to the landscape.

But for me…one of the most important characters in my game, is back to “normal.”

Friday Filler – Things That Have Gotten Weird(er)

Thank Grog It’s Firday!

I have to admit that this has been a pretty great week, if you want to ignore the fact that it’s still weird out there.  I mean, yes…it’s still very weird out there. And depending on who you talk to (from a safe distance), it is even weirder than usual.

People are losing it.  Not just about the game not working right, but other stuff too.  I think it has to do with realistic expectations.  I mean…come on…did you really thing that TSTO would work great during an international pandemic, when it hardly worked well before???   Bob can only do so much…even though working at home has been great for him!  He doesn’t have to wear pants, and his cat “Frederick-Von-Cattinburgh” loves having him around.

But, if you start to look at some of the other hints, it’s obvious to me that the writers were losing it, BEFORE the rest of us were losing it.  Bearing in mind (not baring…that’s different…ask Bob), that a lot of this had to be planned, and most likely written and programmed way before the Pandemic Panic hit.

So there are some weird twists…even for TSTO.

TGIF- Of Cheaters, Lockdowns and Mask

Thank Grog It’s Firday!

Although…Firday doesn’t feel a whole lot different than Mernday. So much for retirement.  All of my “casual clients” in my “semi-retirement” mode, have all been in a state of crazy PIVOT mode…along with all of my volunteer work, and more Zoom hours than any human should have to endure.  I have a zillion balls in the air…and they are all on fire.

I found the last bit of this update, horribly ironic.  There is nothing like a dialogue about cheating in baseball, when we are being cheated OUT of baseball!  One of the things I loved the most about Baseball, was the lack of overt cheating (spitballs and corked bats don’t count).  But, like so many other things…technology has sullied the game I once loved.

Of course the bit about the Isotopes was a thinly veiled reference to the horrendous Astros scandal.  It was funny…mostly… But, it made me think of so many other cheaters in the world.

Friday Filler- Dear EA- Please Make Some New Resolutions!

Thank Grog It’s Firday!

I am writing this early, knowing that by the time you read this, I will either be, (1) At the Amazing WWII Museum in New Orleans (2) on a plane after a week in NOLA, another year older, but likely not much wiser (3) recovering at home after a night of flying, then driving after a week in NOLA, (4) writing this posthumously, as a week in NOLA killed me.

All of the above may be true.

The one very obvious thing is that I hardly tapped…because I hardly HAD to tap.

You can look at this event as the “Last BIG EVENT of the year!” or the FIRST BIG EVENT of the New Year!.” And the fact is, it is the exact format of the first event of last year…and that is not a good thing.

It’s that time of year…when we all make resolutions to make changes, and become the best “we” that we can be. (or as Melania says…”Be Best”).

DEAR EA…PLEASE RESOLVE TO…

Friday Filler – Ah…Come On. Santa is a Nazi?

Thank Grog It’s Firday!

I’m not going to say why…but man, do I need a break from this week.  No…it has nothing to do with Peach Mint Korn (inside family/friends joke) but more to do with trying to get everything done I need to get done, before heading out to New Orleans on the 27th. I know…I know...poor, poor me!

But, what I really want to write about, is that I think the writers have really lost it this year. I get it. Grandpa’s memory is more than a little hazy. But, come on. Did they really have to go there?

Pagans are one thing…but making Santa a Nazi, is really over the top. However,  Heir Santa is only a small portion of the “less than Christmas” vibe of this event.  Let’s take a look and see what else the writers are cooking up…

Friday Filler- It’s Not About the Watch

Thank Grog It’s Firday!

I have to admit, when I saw that Grandpa was the main character in the first act of the new “Holiday/Christmas/Winter” event, I was a bit put off. Especially when the opening lines had to do with Death coming to take Abe to “the other side.”

But, the fact is, I was mostly bummed because it meant that I couldn’t keep Abe and Mona perpetually feeding pigeons into the black hole, across the street from the SuperCollider. This is important, as it keeps things stable in my Springfield, balancing out “the end,” by feeding just enough matter into the black hole, to keep it from sucking everything we know and love, into the black hole.

And then, I read the article about the super, super, black hole that is in our very own galaxy…that is a gazillion times bigger than the black hole that is supposed to be at the center of the galaxy…and just for good measure,  looked out of my window, and saw everything in place…not being sucked up (at least that I could see). So, rather than freaking out, decided instead to look back and focus on the watch.

Which watch you say? Well…I can tell you that there is more than one addled old grandpa story about a watch. Read on!

Friday Filler – Gaining Perspective in TSTO and Life From the ISS

Thank Grog It’s Firday!

Yes, it has been another week of multitasking. Finishing the bathroom(s), doing a ton of client work, and still doing the 24/7 caregiver bit to my wife. But, the fact is, once I found the rhythm, it fell into place pretty well, once I accepted my place in all of the chaos.

And it was made all the easier by the fact that I hardly had to play TSTO at all. As in barely, barely, barely…to finish this chapter.

I’m really not sure how I feel about the game right now. But, I realize that my emotions and opinions are slightly colored by the rest of the craziness around me.  Like accepting the weird choices in the sizes of the buildings in our game (come on…the Stadiums aren’t much bigger than the stores), and just having fun…it’s all just gaining a little perspective.

Friday Filler – How Old Is Too Old to Be Creative?

Thank Grog It’s Firday!

What a week…

The news this week was full of awful stuff…with very few bits of good news worth watching.  So mostly, I didn’t. I knew what was going on…but it all felt the same, like we had been here before.   Kind of like this update….which is a whole lot of the same.  Some interesting writing…but otherwise, not much of a “game.”

It made me remember some of the crazy updates we used have as “normal.”  Chasing stuff…being chased by stuff…killing…maiming… No, wait…was that the news, or highlights from my home improvement projects?   I’ll get to that too.

And then, just when I thought things couldn’t get weirder, the  long-time, and now former Simpsons music  score composer filed a lawsuit against FOX, alleging  “wrongful termination and age discrimination.” And I was surprised that I had mixed feelings about that too…

So…many…mixed…emotions.  So many ants. And yes…I’ll get to that as well.
