Diary of a Wookiee: Getting Medieval on Springfield

Oi Oi Oi!  How are all my favorite vikings, mages, elf lords, goblins, orcs and hobbits doing?  Anyone geeking out with me right now?

So unless you’ve been living in a bunker for fear of the unknown, you know that a Clash of Clans (CoC) Parody is upon us in TSTO.  While I’ve read mixed reviews about this new event, I give EA an A+ for doing something no one was expecting. As far as requests from tappers go, I don’t think I ever saw someone say they should bring elements of a strategy game to TSTO.  Admittedly I don’t hang around too much on other forums (who has the time?) but I’d remember seeing that because my first response would have been “Oh dear Jebus, please no!”

2014-08-19 12.35.00

So many strategy games.  As an admitted player of Star Wars Angry Birds, I see the ads for them all the time while I wait for my carbonite award to melt.  Clash of Clans, Empire: Four Kingdoms, Samurai Seige, Dungeon Overlord, League of Shadows, Battle Beach, Total Conquest, Kingdom Clash, Pocket Fort, Kingdom Rush Frontiers, Apoc Wars, Castle Clash…. that’s a lot of games and I’ve never downloaded one.

Clash of Clans

There are so many mobile games that take the “I have a city and I want to basically design it only to have it destroyed by someone else so I’m gonna attack you too… better train some soldiers” and build a game around it.  Much different than the city builder style we have in TSTO.  When I first hear about CoC… I immediately reminisced about younger years where I enjoyed the first Age of Empires.  I played that a lot during my first deployment to the Middle East (fun fact: I was there during 9/11) but was never good at it.  Even the computer on easy usually whomped on me lol.

I have some good friends who play CoC and always ask why I’m not part of their clan and of course my reply is always why aren’t we neighbors in TSTO.  To each their own.  I was never the D&D or LARPing kind of geek but I have to admit to some cosplay desires (believe it or not, not all of them include Slave Girl Leia as my partner).  I also spent quite a few teenage years playing the Star Wars RPG.  Anyone else play that?  I had a wookiee gladiator turned smuggler turned Tatooine crime boss that was pretty dope.

Moving on before this post becomes a recollection of my past lol.  We all know The Simpsons is one of those shows that enjoys lampooning anything and anyone and I find it hilarious that they’ve added CoC to the mix.  TSTO is certainly not a popular war strategy game but now we get a glimpse into what it would be like if it was.

Now, getting to the the point of this diary entry.  With my new castle and only one new strip of land, I wondered how the heck I was going to get in the spirit of this event.  Seemed dumb to just lump castles haphazardly at the bottom of Wookieetown.  Did I really care about this event anyways?  I could always finally get around to redesigning my Springfield but was I really willing to nuke my masterpiece?

Wookieetown 2014

Just this image should give you your answer.  While COC isn’t my bag, so far I’m really enjoying the Simpsons parody version of it.  It’s different, it’s semi-unique and once I got the swing of the mechanics, very fun.  Add to that my desire to get into the event because I at least owe it to the readers of this site, I’m in.  Unfortuantely for my town which took a year or so to become what it was, I’m a whole hog kind of wookiee.  Go big or go home, right?

The biggest obstacle I have had to a redesign of Wookieetown has been the complete image of my town for posterity.  Courtesy of some shenanigans and a semi-broken foot, I found myself stuck with my foot propped up and some time on my hands so I finally got around to doing it.  There’s a good stitching post Bunny and I did if you’re interested in doing one of these yourself.  For this one, I literally took 104 screenshots and then fit them by eye in Microsoft Paint.

At this point, I was all ready to drop the bomb but had second thoughts.  I’m more of the drop food not bombs veteran but it was the only way.  I guess this whole event is about going to war and although nuclear weapons should never be used for the sake of humanity, it’s just a digital town, right?  Still not sure, I decided I’d just procrastinate and enjoy some Simpsons.  Who’d have thunk my answer would be right there in Season 8, Episode 7: “Lisa’s Date with Density”?

Nuke the Whales

Well big guy in the sky with a sense of humor, I sure do dislike that uber expensive TSTO whale.  If the rest of my town has to feel the wrath to satisfy a cartoon poster and months worth of buyer’s remorse, so be it.   Nelson would be proud.

Wookiee to launch control… we are a go… (check out this post for more details on nuking your town til it glows)

5… 4… 3… 2… 1…

Nuclear Option Vid SS

Utter desolation.  The remains of my wookiee 2D said it all.

Sad Wookiee

So long blue eyes… until I make you again.  The only items not in storage were my Simpson House, Squidport Entrance, Krustyland Bus Stop, Barbarian Castle and debris.  It took a while moving things around but I decided I wanted the center of my town to be dedicated to the Clash of Clones Event.  Everything a visiting invader could want would be right there.  I lined the outskirts of my land with every item that brought a character into my game for extra tappery.

To keep with the “medieval” theme, I mainly used items I felt fit it.  Dead trees, pumpkin patches, statues, trees, etc.  I really wish I had a cobblestone road or dirt path option but you make do with what you got.  I think the end result is a success.  To stich this one, I took 24 screenshots and my Autostitch program actually did all the work for me.  Exciting since it usually doesn’t like more than eight images.  Good thing I’ll try anything twice lol.

Wookiee Medieval War

As I get more castles and stuff, I’ll certainly tweak this design and make it more pleasing to at least my eyes.  This is the basic footprint to expand upon.  I have a few ideas for more.  Maybe steal someone else’s idea and hide ice sculptures in thicker woods? I’m sure my neighboreenos will see this new landing screen and be all “wah wha wah?” but it’ll be ok.  I’ll be back to designing just as soon as the war is over.  Hopefully Plato and George Santayana weren’t right about when it ends.

Well, those are my pain med addled thoughts about the event and what it led me to do.  I understand nuking is not for everyone and some might think it’s callous to destroy hard work but I’m actually looking forward to the fun during this event and then a future redesign.  If it turns out to be a bad decision, I have photos to rebuild my town and at least it led to some silly thoughts from me.

Have you done anything drastic for the event?  Got your own medieval area of your town you’d like to share?  Love the war or hate it?  Know any good foot doctors?  Sound off below if you like.  I’m gonna go prop my foot up and watch some more of the marathon on FXX.  Thank goodness all my stuff didn’t disappear and noone was hurt in the process.

Bloody Homer

TTFN… Wookiee out!

Hey Neighbor. Congrats on taking the plunge! At least you will always have that awesome stitching to remember the OG WookieeTown by. I really hope you have as much fun as I did designing v2.0 from the ground up. Besides, if you didn’t get the sign from the funny man up above by season 8 during the marathon, the answer would have definitely slapped you in the fuzzy head by season 18 episode 16: “Homerazzi”. Remember when the Krusty doll accidentally turned on the cars headlight which focused on the Scent of a Wookiee cologne bottle causing it to boil and soon explode, thus destroying the precious memories family photo album in the fire proof safe. The family had to go back and re-capture those memories and experiences, but in new creative ways. That’s like a sign from up above and then some right?

Anyways, Happy Tappin Fuzzball. I will visit often and am looking forward to seeing all of your unique creations in the near future. Till then, it’s back to the battlefield. En Garde!

    • Lol… try version 5.0. I’ve redesigned a bunch since October 2012. I have 3 town stitch images… there like pictures of my kid growing up. I guess Wookieetown is currently in it’s awkward teenage D&D faze. Thanks for reminding me of that awesome Homerazzi moment. It definitely would have been a sign. Happy battling neighbor!

  2. You do get rewarded with each quest completed as you obtain elixir and gold to spend on necessities for this update 🙂

  3. I got a free red gem from defending a building! Who else?

  4. I love the stitch you guys made of your town! It would be cool if we had the ability to take an screenshot of our entire game in town. I nuked as well and am playing around with a few different ideas of how to remake it. It’s such a time consuming procedure but totally kills time between raidings.

    • I would love being able to zoom out instead of stitching everything. Your town is always so unique. Looking forward to all your future creativity.

Thank you! My town right now is straight up crazy-ville. Lol. My original plan didn’t exactly go the way I wanted, but I’m actually digging this new totally wacked out Springfield that’s emerging. I figure I’ll just keep adding to the weirdness and then start fresh again when the event is over. I’m totally loving your town though! =D

        • Very cool. I really enjoy seeing all the things your mind comes up with. We gotta both start doing 2Ds again. My town is still a WIP but I’m having fun in the medieval landing screen area. Hoping to come up with a couple more weird buildings.

  5. Kjam hope I remembered the name right I accendently tagged you, I’m so sorry! Please forgive me.

  6. I am loving this event. After the event I’ll probably set up a Renaissance fair or I was thinking about incorporating the mini golf with the castle. I dunno. Love the decos. The torches. ( I’m putting them everywhere. ) Love the hay carts for some odd reason. Added a chicken coop to Cletus’ farm. Love the little banners. Cool, new stuff.

  7. I got confused… were you talking about SWTOR? And do you mean that you use to play it or that you still play it?

    • No… referring to the Star Wars Role Playing Game. It was originally released by West End Games but they went bankrupt. Last time I played was probably 1996. I still have like 8 books for it in storage. Basically took elements of D&D and was all in the Star Wars Universe. Good news is the game was revived by Wizards of the Coast in 2000 but I hear they changed a few things. It’s a d20 system, used to be only regular die.

  8. I like how EA is basically using TSTO to make fun of one of their competitors. Supercell should sue them for defamation lol

  9. I was shocked when I popped in last night and saw the emptyness! I added some destruction and hope Wookieetown will once again be a glorious place 🙂

  10. I love you Wookiee! Move to Chicago and join my Simpsons trivia team! 😉

    • Lol… all my kids live in CA so I’ll be here for quite a while. Having a Simpsons Trivia Team sounds awesome. I had fun passing Simpsons info with one of my local comic store nerds the other day. Sadly, he resembles CBG in no way, more of a SVT.

      • So he’s more Stuart from Big Bang! 😉 I haven’t been into comics in yrs but my awesome Uncle had me hooked as a kid /young teen. The Thing, Justice League, Red Sonja, Thor, so many! Only have a couple dz still and few were in protective sleeves sadly. Wish I had ANY local CBG to see!

        • There’s comic book stores all over. If I had to describe him, he’s more like a longer haired Jack Black in High Fidelity. Instead of record knowledge, it’s comics and geek lore lol. I have a few comics in sleeves in storage.

  11. I can’t believe I stumbled upon this. I love tapped out, I play it 24/7! It’s nice to meet you x

  12. You are a brave fellow Wookie, nuking such a beautiful town. However, I am also looking forward to viewing your new creation as I am sure it will be as good as the last! Sorry to hear about the foot, hope it recovers soon!!

Albatro527 – I second your suggestion. Would be great to be able to visit and appreciate towns where players have put a lot of efforts in!!

  13. Any foot doctors I know are in the UK so unfortunately no use to you. I sympathise though, I injured my calf muscle and knee last week and so was laid up last Friday and Saturday. Dosed up on pain medication (Naproxen is my friend at the minute) and hardly able to walk. Fast forward a week and I’m much better although still on the pain medication and supposed to be taking it easy. Also back at work too, but been on lighter duties.
I nuked my town a while back and am not planning on doing it again until at least after the event. If Halloween follows quickly after, then it will be next year by the time I do it. Your town is looking good though and it sounds like you are happy with it so far.

  14. Hey, I think I found another glitch: when u click on the HayCar or the Stock and u want to cancel it, it will be placed in ur inventory. So if u accidentally click on it but don’t place it on land but click on ‘cancel’, u will buy it…

  15. I love that you refer to Age of Empires as being in your ‘younger years’. Sadly I can only refer to it as being some previous era of my adult life. We used to play it on the work intranet back in the days when they didn’t care what you loaded onto the work computers. Now I can’t load anything without ‘permission’. Not even BlueStacks!

    • We’re all only as old as we feel/admit. I was in late teens to early 20s so at 34, it seems like the younger years lol. It was a fun game but I’ve never been a great “gamer”. Still got a lot of life left. Looking forward to saying “when I blogged about a Simpsons game in my younger years”.

  16. I decided I didn’t want to work on designing my town until I bought all the land. I started a few areas and was working my way through my land when I noticed I was going to run out of room quick! My goal now is to buy it all, which will take a while, then start my designs. I think I’m at 11 by 12 with land right now. What’s the quickest way to make money? I’m guessing house farming, but which house will give me the best payout?

  17. Wow. Impressive, most impressive! That Chewbacca/Wookiee park design you did in the middle of your Springfield is so wizard! Though I see what you mean by having your castle relegated to a strip of land on the bottom isn’t too conducive for recreating a medieval environment. So I don’t blame you wanting to create more space for it. I was fortunate enough to start playing late and reading posts here on TSTO Addicts to know that land in the game is limited, so I started from start being somewhat conservative in how much land I used for what. Living in the suburbs of NYC, it is something I am used to anyway outside of the game. I am always keeping land economy in my mind while building and designing. Before I realized all three castles of this event each had their own walls and towers, I had originally planned to put all three within a walled area to consolidate space. I have since moved them to their own areas, but always keeping in mind that I will need land for future growth. All of this may have resulted in my Springfield being one without a lot of “elbow space” but I also kept everything functional and accessible.

I know your new town is a work in progress. I will be curious to see how it turns out for you. If it is half as good as good as what you had before, it will be fantastic. Cheers.

    • The wookiee 2D was actually one of the first I ever did and definitely one of my favorites. After this event, it’ll find its way back to my town, most likely in the center again. Appreciate the compliments.

  18. Please me if this question was already asked, but when you nuke do you get to keep all your land? I still wish we could have two Springfields in one account so I can spread all my stuff. I love how my Springfield looks but to be honest I’m getting bored with it.

    • All the land you’ve bought is still there after the nuke. You also will find your SqP Entrance, KL Bus Stop, Simpson House, Castle and any rubbish you had in your town sitting where they were pre-nuke.

  19. Wookiee, my post is “thricefold”! One, I know from foot problems and pain meds alone may get you through the short term, but could come back and bite your furry butt years later. Hope you can see a doc!

Second, kudos for taking the plunge and using the nuke! That was a ton of effort gone, but hopefully it will be rewarding to have a “do over”.
I’m level 41 and glad I JUST realized where the game centers when someone enters, changes with more land! Which leads to…

I will 2nd Albatros! My town is in its infancy because I have a master plan already, but need the land first! I’m an artist (for real) that’s oddly anal and I put a ton of time into my town. I was hoping with the “random neighbor” visits, to see other quality towns, but 85+% are the same “plunking” with a little thought, or cramming and house farming.
I would also love to see a dedicated “friend” area for those that really work at it. I have some great neighbors, but not enough.

I know it’s a tall order and wouldn’t be an easy task for you and the other addicts. May I suggest you could “jury” those requesting, like Art museum shows do? Maybe require a screenshot to make it easier/quicker to judge?

Albatros527, I will be your neighbor if you have room, and will make room if you request! Alicatnip

    • Definitely got a doc looking at my foot. Thankfully it’s service connected. Not easy on my poor furry feet that I’m a giant. It was a big endeavor but I think my next town can be just as good. I love creating though so it’ll be ok. As for the list I’m thinking of as the Master Builder Club, I just need to bounce ideas with Alissa and Bunny. I’m sure we’ll figure something out.

    • Okay accepted alicatnip 🙂 please don’t mind the nuclear waste dump on the east side of town by the car racing track… I can’t decide how to incorporate the barrels, slime, junk, etc. into my town. Maybe I will take the plunge and ‘clean up springfield’ soon lol

Jury system of selection sounds exciting at first, but it may be untenable and unwieldly for the addicts team. Due to the very subjective method of appraising city ‘worth’, I was meaning more like an honour system where one adds their name to a list of likeminded folk. If you find crummy towns there is always the unfriend option! (Yes I went there)

      • That’s good to hear Wookiee, our feet are easy to take for granted til we start having problems. Oooff, can’t imagine being tall too, I’m only 5’2″!

No worries albatros! I know how it goes, a lot of my buildings are randomly placed until I get the money and land to do what I want to!

You’re right, it may be easier on everyone if we were to have an honor system and self police. 🙂

    • Alicatnip, I’d like to be neighbors if you have room. I feel the same about the random neighbors and while I don’t consider myself a master, I do put a lot of love and time into my town. Personally I prefer designing to farming. Currently I’m post nuke, in progress town, level 43 playing since the beginning of TSTO, addict.

      • Ms Black Chat (LOVE the name! My sister brought me a poster back from Paris), I will make room for a feline sister! Had a flood of new neighbors when this started, but some aren’t pulling they’re weight!

I will send you a request.

      • Lekitty, I tried to add you but got the “you or your friend… Blah, blah”. I have 5 slow open so feel free to add me when you have room! (Unless something else is happening. *shrug*).

  20. I nuked my beta town… quite liberating and I enjoyed my new design, I was able to build designs I had no room in Springfield A for.

Too fear to nuke alunited Springfield… all my precious creations but the medieval castles are causing me a minor head ache of how to fit in.

Post some pics Wookie so we can all enjoy.

  21. I started playing i think a little bit earlier than last christmas, and i’m impressed how many buildings i lost! Traveling around the springfields, i can see how much i’m jealous of you who started before! I really enjoyed your cenarium, please do this more often, it’s great to see creative minds. Sorry my english, not my first language.

  22. Why do you have to level up ur clash of clones characters

  23. Good luck with your new build. Yeah it’s scary but ya gotta start somewhere and hey, it’s fun! Add me anyone.. I need more friends that actually play. Gasdrinker

  24. Was surprised to see that you joined the “nuke” brigade and sorry to see your awesome Wookie face go. Looking forward to see what you come up with. I have a case of the guilts about my castles now as I just stuck them on the empty strip of new land. Must fix it 🙂

  25. Hey Addicts team, I’m sure you have already seen this as you are always up on TSTO news way before anyone else lol, but I was hoping you could clarify something. I saw the following on the Tapped Out Facebook page:

“Are you raiding without all your troops again? They should wear sweaters – it’s cold outside. Your mom will backseat play for you unless you use all your troops to take advantage of the special troop replenishment every Saturday during the event!”

Seeing as tomorrow is Saturday, do you know what the special troop replenishment every Saturday is referring to?

  26. EA should have morphed the existing buildings into medieval versions for us at the beginning of the event, sort of like for Halloween et al… Now that would have been REALLY cool!

  27. I have to admit that my jaw hit the floor my first visit after the nuke, lol. Very, very brave 🙂 and I like what you’ve done so far. Can’t wait to see how it evolves!

  28. How did you make the whole town screenshot?

  29. Just want to say thanks for posting a picture of your pre-nuke town … my partner is constantly asking why you and alissa and bunny don’t show your towns so 1/3 may mean I get some peace :p

    • lol I’m in process of working my Stonecutters buildings into my town properly..after that i’ll see if I can bribe Bunny to stitch it for me (I don’t have the patience lol)

    • This is my third time showing off my town. I guess I forget folks would like to see it. I was just lazy and didn’t get around to stitching it. I was uber proud of it but I’m digging the new space. It has my creativity flowing.

  30. Dear Wookie,

I envy your courage to nuke… and also applaud your “new” landscape for the current war in progress.. perhaps some creative 3d castle designs will inspire you, Bunny and alissa to create a post on ways to medievalise (is that even a word??) our humble towns.
As always look forward to all your posts and hope the foot gets better!!

    • Thanks friend. I’ll have to see what 3D I can come up with… I have a few ideas.

      • Hey there Wookie, hope your foot mends proper and fast.

Would it be possible to have a new “neighbor add me” post/reply thread on the site– one specifically for players who invest a lot of time and thought into their Springfield designs and execution?

I admit I’m a nosy neighbor, I check out my fellow players town with a fair chunk of my playtime. I have a handful of interesting neighbors to visit… And then a ton of haphazard piles of debris posing as cities !

So I’m requesting a “Designers neighbor thread” i guess. Not a very smooth name… But you get the idea !

        Origin ID: albatros527

        • Hmmmm… the only problem with that thread would be we have no way to ensure folks are “Master Builders”. Ultimately town beauty is in the ye of the beholder. I like to think I’m a good designer but my town isn’t much right now courtesy of the nuke. Let me see what the Lady Addicts think.
