2D- Rachel’s T.A.R.D.I.S.

Did you all miss me? NO?! Oh…fine then. 😛

I started making 2D art in my town from being inspired by the cool and different things I saw in other neighbors during the Whacking Day Event in May when I started. I loved the thought of creating and designing one of a kind things to make my town stand out from the rest.

Here I am months later, still enjoying the creative process of challenging myself to make something recognizable out of silly items like mailboxes, stop signs, and dumpsters. Makes me giggle just saying that. Now though, I am more wanting to help and hope to inspire others to start on their own creative path. I LOVE seeing art from all my neighbors. Watching them learn and grow just like I did. Love seeing designs come to life within their towns.

I hope in some small way, shape, or form that you…the reader…learn from watching me break down just how I made these designs and in turn have the inspiration to recreate, expand, and go above and beyond what I do with your own designs.

Recently we had a new reader Rachel join us. She had never really seen the 2D/3D art until she stumbled on this site. She stated seeing all the things showcased here inspired her. In hopes of inspiring a new Addict even more, I requested she pick the next 2D design to be created. Sky was the limit.

And so I give you…Rachel’s choice…

A simple and silly blue box that seems to have touch every corner of the world. It brings happiness, sadness, and…the Doctor. Time And Relative Dimension In Space…or T.A.R.D.I.S. Now some of you may wonder, “What does this have to do with the Simpsons?” Well, it has such a reach that not only are lines from the Simpsons found in the new Doctor Who episodes (Like an Ood saying “D’oh” in Planet of the Ood) but some common catchphrases have been used too (End of Time: Part 2, as the Doctor is being wheeled away he shouts, “Worst! Rescue! EVER!” Just like Comic Book Guy).

On the flip side, the Doctor has infiltrated the Simpsons TV episodes. In Treehouse of Horror X (Enter…The Collector), you can see the poor Doctor trapped in plastic by Comic Book Guy, along with many other characters he has “collected”.

In Mayored to the Mob, we can actually see Tom Baker’s Doctor Who character animated into the Simpsons world at the Bi-Mon-Sci-Fi-Con.

And then there is the T.A.R.D.I.S., it can be seen making an appearance in Love is a Many Splintered Things.

There are many other times the Doctor and items related to the Doctor Who series can be found in the Simpsons (Sideshow Bob’s Last Gleaming, Bart the Fink, Holidays of Future Passed). Just look. I think it is due to all the geeks behind the scenes adding in their love of “all things geek”. Lol

Now…on to what you came here for (I think). Rachel’s T.A.R.D.I.S. This was definitely a fun one as it spoke to my Geek side. 🙂

I began with a layout of the “POLICE BOX” area with Snapdragons. I wanted to try and write out the words, but found out quickly it just wasn’t going to work without making the scale almost the size of my entire town. So…I left it without. (Photoshop always comes in handy to add later if wanted.)

Continuing on with the Snapdragons, I started to layout the basic shape of the center and windowed doors.

I debated back and forth what to use for the “light” in the windows. The Carved Ice Sculptures were ok, but I chose this time to actually use an item I had a few of thanks to the “Misery Box” (Mystery Box). I used the White Picket Fences.

Next was the blue. The Blue Dumpsters, though big n bulky, seemed to fit. Gave it that more “box like” look. It really started to take shape. I tweaked them here and there. Turning some one way and some the other to give appearance of the breaks and lines.

I wanted the door insert to stand out a bit, so instead of the Blue Dumpster, I chose to use the Lawnchairs. Filled in the remaining open squares. They added a lil more dimension due to the size difference and color between the two blue items.

tardis 6

The last item was the light up top. I used a mix of White Picket Fences, the Iron Fences, and a few more Blue Dumpsters.

And there you have it…Rachel’s T.A.R.D.I.S.

TARDIS 0

I hope you like it Rachel. 🙂

So what do YOU think? You still liking the 2D’s? Want more? Want less? Anything YOU want to see?

If you have dabbled in the 2D I would LOVE to see yours. Please feel free to use our Flickr page to share and link the pics below.

Until next time.

  1. How big was the area you used? Like what are the specs of the pavement?

    • Hmmmm…the area I use for my 2D art is still in my B town. I can count it up…just give me a bit as it is a MASSIVE area in the center of my game.

I’ll get back to you 😉

    • Sorry it took me a bit. I checked the area and here are the counts…

For the width (left to right) it is 76 lil tiny squares.

For the height (up and down) it is 44 lil tiny squares.

I never pre-measure or pre-create any design I do. It is all done on site at the very moment I start placing the decorations down. All in my head and flowing into my lil tapping fingers into the town. That is why I really do not have specs. It is all done randomly while the image is being created. Spur of the moment if you will. I will usually go back and tweak it a few times even after I am “done” just to make it looks right…to me. Lol.

Hope that helps. Let me know if there is anything further you need. 😉

  2. You’re freaking amazing…I was about to ask if anyone ever made a tardis…

  8. Fantastic job! Being a huge Dr. Who fan (and of course a huge Simpsons fan) I love it! The only 2D art I’ve managed is a big jack-o-lantern, but it pales next to your stuff.

    • Thanks 🙂 I love my Whovian side. You should’ve seen my earlier work. Lol. It took a few trial and errors to figure out the town layout and how decorations look at certain angles. You should show your work. Put it on our Flickr or here. I’d love to see it. 🙂
