THOH 2015 101: Shop Keeper’s Daily Challenges

Note: Yes a few returning items hit the store today…however because they’re returning we’re not doing a new Should I Buy Post on them.  You can check out the older Should I Buy posts here or here for these returning items.  The only added benefit for them is the currency population now….

Hey Howdy Hey Tappers!

Well here we are, in most Tappers favorite time of the year in Springfield….Halloween!  (although I prefer Christmas 😉 )  The leaves on the tress have changed colors, the water is murky and there’s a darkness that falls over our TSTO screens.  All of these effects fit in perfectly with this year’s theme….Nightmares.

As we’ve seen with recent events (really since Stonecutters in June of 2014), EA likes to add an element of Daily Challenges to each Event as a way to earn more currency, special prizes and sometimes event bonuts! (bonus donuts)  The 2015 THOH Event is no different.  Yesterday we saw the Shop Keeper’s Challenge get implemented with the House of Evil!  This is a great way to do tasks each day to earn bonus crafting currency and earn bonuts each week!

Now I know some of you are a bit confused about the challenges and exactly what to do.  So let’s break it all down for you…including a list of this week’s challenges…ico_thoh2015_shopkeeperavatar

So as Bunny broke down in yesterday’s post…to get the Daily Challenges you need the House of Evil.  Now some of you may have it from previous THOH Events (which I did) and some of you may not.  If you don’t have it you’ll be awarded it for free once you trigger the challenges.

So now let’s cover some basics…

When Does a new Task Start?

Tasks unlock at 8am LOCAL TIME each day.  So whatever part of the world you’re in at 8am your time the next day’s task will unlock.

Do I Only Have 24hrs to Finish Each Task?

No.  If you don’t finish Day 1 when Day 2 unlocks it’ll still allow you to finish Day 1.  And You don’t have to finish them in order. So basically Day 1 will roll over into Day 2 if you don’t finish it before Day 2 unlocks.  And you can do both Day 1 and Day 2’s tasks.
You just can’t jump ahead.  So you can go backwards and finish a task, but you can’t move forward until that day unlocks.

So How Long Do I Have to Complete Each Week’s Challenges?

You have a full week (7 days) to complete the 5 challenges.  The Challenges will reset each week on Monday, so if you don’t complete the 5 by the time they reset you’ll miss out.

Today’s Challenge Says I Have to Squish Zombies, Can I Squish Them in a Neighbor’s Town and Have them Count?

zombiehuman5_front_walk_image_2

Yes and no. As long as you still have your neighbor actions available (remember it’s only 90/day) if you tap ZOMBIES in your neighbor’s town it’ll count toward the Zombie total.  But if you’ve used all your neighbor actions already it will not count. (this same principle applies to upgrading..if you need Zombies to upgrade and you’ve maxed out your friend actions for the day they won’t count towards the upgrade total).

And I think that addresses most of your Daily Challenge concerns…

So now let’s take a look at what we can expect from the Daily Challenges this week:

Day Task Earns
Monday 10/12 Tell a Scary Story at the Spooky Campfire x4 100 ico_thoh2015_skeletonbones_md
Tuesday 10/13 Squish Zombies x30 100 ico_thoh2015_zombiebrains_md
Wednesday 10/14 Make Youngsters Make S’mores x15 50 ico_thoh2015_zombiebrains_md 50 ico_thoh2015_snakeeggs_md
Thursday 10/15 Craft a Prize 100 indicator_bunnyears
Friday 10/16 Squish Snakes x100 100 ico_thoh2015_snakeeggs_md

If you complete all 5 challenges before the reset you’ll be awarded 20 Bonuts! ico_priz_challengedonuts

And that wraps up the details on the Daily Challenges and info for week 1!

  1. Kris (KidShamrock390)

Will there be SIBs for the Ancient Ruins or The Shinning Maze?

  2. I just had an Indiana Jones moments: I was going through my neighbours looking for the ones with the Zombies. Most of them had a different nightmare, so I was thinking “Why is it always snakes?” (as in “Raiders of the Lost Ark”).

    • I had the exact same thought about 3 hours ago. TSTO brainwave.

    • try having “spooky scary skeletons” going through your head when hunting for them lol

    • You know what I had been thinking exactly the same thing! For me the snakes are by far the hardest to spot in my neighbours towns and they don’t seem to spawn as quickly as the other nightmares. BTW does anyone know why there are two very obviously different designs of snakes and only one of the others (if there are more of the others the differences are too subtle to spot on my phone!)

  3. 20 Bonuts (for ShopKeeper weekly challenge) Now EA is making up for the Slow Start to this event,

So much better than cursed Frogurt (as I first predicted).

Sandra and other Lost fans are happy it isn’t Frogurt, because we know fire-arrows would just attack it and then it would melt and be just ordinary Cursed Yogurt :p

More donut rewards, Thank You EA!

Gah I didn’t realise the tasks would roll over and spent TWO WHOLE DONUTS speeding up my final story whoops. Ah well should still make a net bonus of 18 😛

  5. Perhaps I misread the original post, but what nightmare the kids contract to release is not necessarily what you will receive. I have done this twice now. At the end of a storytelling session, I have more than enough stock to make the next level, i.e. my characters generate 64 nightmares every four hours and I need fewer than 64 nightmares to reach the next level. What I do is as soon as possible after I release the nightmares, I appoint the next storyteller. Doing that I get about 25 new nightmares, the ones specified by the new storyteller. If I tap all of the old ones before appointing the new storyteller, I get three at the most. This would mean that the nightmares in the bank do not have a form yet and only acquire it when released from the bank. I am at level 15 and have all of the kids except 2. I can currently level up every 8 hours (2 shifts) with no or little extras from visiting neighbours. Hope that gives everyone else an idea of what level 15 is like. When I started, I needed 12 hours to level up.

  6. Always happy about easy donuts!

  7. Alissa- im not familiar with these new/old items.Might there be something extra that the return items do now that they didnt do before? Example: added questline/s, added citizen job/s, or even added actions etc…? Thanx for your time!! Smiles!

  8. Since there will not be a thread on the new items, will write here. While the donut torture device may look attractive, although a bit expensive, I have to remark that I have never seen it in action. So regardless of how good the animation is, most people seem to ignore it. Anyone considering it might take that into consideration. And at 750 dollars for 36 hours, the payout is not premium either, unless the pay-out has changed since 2014.

    • barleecreations (canid88)

Thanks Sraige, I was thinking about buying it but now I’ll save my donuts for something better.

      • for what it’s worth, i have it and love it. one of my favorite tasks for homer, especially because i can easily store it any time i might need to make homer available for something else, like a questline task. plenty of other great tasks like that for him though. plus i DID get it free last year, so i doubt i could stomach spending 80 donuts on a nice decoration with one task, cool as it is.

also have the grand pumpkin, but definitely wouldn’t spend 60 donuts on that… i almost never set milhouse’s task to hang out with it for 20 hours. anyway, just my take. 📼

    • I love mine, it’s one of my favorite animations in the game the only problem is it’s a 1 day 12 hour task and Homer always seems to be needed for something but at the end of every event when he’s finally free it’s always one of the first things I do.

    • If it was 8 or less hours, I would have homer on it a lot. Think it’s 36? So I never use it. Sad because it is one of my favorite animations.

    • I love it although I haven’t used it much. But I have plenty of money rolling in now, mainly thanks to the tennis courts, so I’ve resolved to use it more often. The only problem is Homer is needed for junk collection.
When I nuke my town I fully intend to have the DTD at the centre of my town. IMO it’s the best thing in the game (characters aside).

    • I never use mine. If EA made payout 1 donut instead of $$$, Homer wouldn’t get out of that seat.

  9. Will you do SIB’s for the items that were previously free? Like the Victorian UFO, which I’m considering buying because it adds some tasks for Kang…

  10. Woohoo to the Raven!!! One of my favourite THOH segments, scooped it up right away. REALLY wanted the donut torture device to come back but holy CRAP 80 donuts?!?!? I’ll probably still end up getting it but…wow. The best part of it is Homer’s task which takes 3 days to complete, and since he’s almost always needed for questlines…ahh what to do what to do.

    • Pass. I never use it.

    • I was really excited about the donut torture device when it first came out but it’s now hiding somewhere in my town and I never use it. I understand the temptation but unless you don’t care about 80 donuts, I’d pass if I were you. Good luck either way though!

      • I love having out peeking out from behind my Stomach Staple Center, but I never use it for anything else and I definitely wouldn’t spend 80 donuts to get it. But I do know that there are some folks who really love the animation it comes with.

    • I was excited to see it offered…then sticker shock. One task associated with it…one that takes 1 and a half days to complete. Like you say, Homer is too valuable to tie up (hehe), so much so that I rarely get to see the cool interaction with Matt Groening or Bitey. 🙁

      I.e. pass. :'(

  11. 20 free doughnuts is generous as opposed to prizes you already have or don’t want. I will get barney in my beta town at last thanks EA

  12. Pretty nice chunk of donuts! Im only suprised it didnt call for more zombie squishing.?. Im pleased with the donut deal! Gotta get them when ya can. Side note… so thrilled they brought back the very items i was wantin!! I have put away all my SH items n buildings and made it into SHT! (Springfield Halloween Town) So cool lookin and a rad reason to continue crafting items!!

  13. What’s your verdict on the newly rereleased premium items, The Grand Pumpkin and Donut Torture Device? Worth the donuts?

  14. I would like to ask a favor of our friends living on the other side of the International date line (I.e., Japan, Australia, etc). Could you guys and gals give us a heads up on the next days’ task? That would be really helpful for the rest of us. Thanks. 😃

  15. By a happy coincidence my upgrade called for zombies so today’s challenge couldn’t have been easier. The rest of the week won’t be a problem either. I’ve always liked when an event has a daily challenge like this. It’s a way to break up the monotony of a long event and can keep more characters involved. Now if EA wants to give me donuts just for doing what I would have been doing already, well that’s just hunky dory.

  16. 20 free donuts? Woohoo!

With the 5 each week from the monorail, that’s 25 free donuts a week guaranteed. How awesome is that?

  17. The event is ok. I find the prizes a little underwhelming though. I think this may be the norm going forward as all the known Simpson characters are already in the game. We’ll get skins and variations of buildings already in the game. For example, we have a campfire and got another one.

  18. Off topic. Not sure if this has been brought up yet. I did a search but found nothing, so please forgive me if you had. I noticed that Whacking Day Homer has a task that rewards snake eggs. Are there any other characters that offer event related currency?

  19. Well I bought the pet cemetery today (awesome) and will probably get the Bart raven too once the bonuts kick in from monorail making and daily challenges…All seems too good to be true for me right now I am LOVING this event! ☆☆☆☆☆

    ….BRAIIIIINSS ♡

  20. I have always felt that as a mobile game this should be fun and not a grind out. EA is hitting the sweet spot for me so far with this event. I am enjoying the easy and relaxing pace. Now if we can just improve the spawn rate at neighbor visits, I will probably POP!

  21. The daily tasks are all fine, upto the craft a prize one. Like a lot of people, I am saving my crafting materials up for Hugo and/or whatever high value prizes are released in later acts. I’m going to have to build an item, I don’t really want to finish that task.

    • Old Dude who runs the House of Evil

The crafting one shouldn’t be a problem. The spooky tree and dead tree are easily get able without wasting many resources.

    • I noticed you can craft the tree with the skeleton in it for 100 bunny ears…the prize is 100 bunny ears…so it basically will keep you at your current rate. This makes it much nicer for those of us saving our crafting items for the next act.

    • I’d recommend crafting the Spooky Tree, if you’re low on resources or saving up. That way, the 100 Rabbit Ears you spend, you are instantly repaid. You don’t make an immediate profit, but it means that you don’t lose anything either; and you’re one step closer to 20 donuts 🙂

  22. Is it 20 donuts EACH week? That sounds too generous to be true!

    • That’s my interpretation…but won’t know for 100% sure until they’re awarded on Friday.

    • 20 a week does seem like a lot but last Halloween you could get 30 just for shooting down a UFO. Not everyone of course but I think I got 2 or 3 during the course of the event.

  23. Apologies if you answered this before my question gets posted.

Wasn’t the snake in hollow tree a Whacking Day prize? Since I didn’t see a SIB linked for it in this blog I assume we haven’t had SIB for this one. At 75 Donuts a SIB will be really appreciated. I like the look of it and Whacking Day connection (when I began playing TSTO.) Thanks!

    • No it was premium during whacking day (the rock was a prize). But literally it does nothing. If I have time I’ll do a SIB for it, which we weren’t around during Whacking Day. But honestly it’s one of those if you like it get it items and that’s literally what the post would say.

    • It’s a small 2×2 decoration that currently pays out 12 snakes every 12hrs during the event and should revert to making money/XP afterwards.

The log has a small animated purple and blue snake that pops up it’s head from time-to-time, looks around side-to-side, makes a funny frightened/surprised face (as though it’s about to be whacked), and then it quickly ducks/hides back behind the log. A few seconds latter the animation repeats.

In addition to boosting Vanity by 1500pts, it offers a +2.75% boost to your earning percentage. At 75 donuts, that’s under the ideal of 1% per 20D.

I don’t need anymore snakes/snake eggs, but I still bought one because I liked the look of the thing and enjoy the animation, and have a perfect place for it in my woods.

      Happy Tapping!

      • Thanks for your thorough thoughts on the snake log O.Bob. It’s nice to say hi to a neighbor here!

      • You misunderstand the adverb. I am *NOT* ordinary. I’m ordinarily me. occasionally I am not.

        😉

      • I think that reply was for me. Hi, Bob. That’s what I’d ordinarily say. Otherwise it’s: Hello, Bob. 😉

Yes, I did notice the adverb… but I had trouble figuring out how to turn that into humor… Sorry, I failed. 🙁

    • OMG! LOL!!!

Sometimes I have the bad habit of reading the comments without reading (or at least registering) the writer’s name. So only NOW do I notice you’ve the same handle as one of my better Frink Friends, and it’s NOW confirmed you ARE the same SkyFinger. That’s pretty awesome!

I’ve always been disappointed that we can’t send messages to our Friends in-game. Nice to communicate with you! And I appreciate all the Nameless Forms you send my way! Thanks! 🙂

So yeah, you can see the log for yourself in my town, it’s just up next to the entrance of Kamp Krusty and two of the new green tents, not far from my Spooky Campground.

      • Sky Finger sounds like a cool neighbor to have. I mean, the name is Sky Finger. That’s all that needs to be understood. Will you be my friend?

(Yes, I replied to your comment, Bob…but you’re a bit too ordinary for me. 😉 )

      • Okay, Ordinarily Bob is now my neighbor. He has a super town. Can’t compete. I think he’s top or second spot on my board. Well, he’s definitely not ordinary. I think Sky Finger would only pale in comparison. 😉

  24. I still can’t get over 20 Bonuts reward – thank you EA – very generous, and thank you addicts for all your info 🙂

  25. Useful article! How did you find out the daily challenges in advance? A casual e-mail to EA, or are they posting this info somewhere, themselves?

  26. Can’t seem to find the walkthrough for Hugo’s little quest, wanted to call otu that you can use Fallout Boy to do the “have kids eat lunch at their desk” 60-minute part of the quests, even through, he usually doesn’t get grouped with children characters (and no, he doesn’t get to do any s’mores making or story telling).

  27. Hello ! Thank you for this very helpful topic ! I have a question, and hope that its’ somehow a good place to ask it.

Do you think it’s better to store the currencies (bones, brains, eggs and bunny ears) for the next phase instead of spending them with the craft ? Will the currencies be useful for the next part of the event ?

Thank you in advance for your answers ! 🙂

  28. I like it! It’s an easy sure way of getting 20 bonuts each week! Cute prizes but nothing spectacular in the main game yet, so I’m just building up currency anyway for act 2.

  29. Soooooo annoyed I spent 90 donuts last year on what now amounts to a tiny NPC character. Makes the Funzos seem like a good deal.

And no, the couple hundred bones, brains, snake eggs, etc don’t make up for it. Those aren’t difficult to acquire–only total noobs trade donuts for in-game currency.

    • What NPC are you referring to?

      • If you read the columns for past THOH events, then it finally becomes clear that in the past the House of Evil was sold as a combo with the Krusty Doll (makes sense, since the doll came from the shop in the TV episode) for 90 donuts, which was a somewhat reasonable price. Now the building is for free, leaving the doll for 90 and it is an NPC. However, it can be looked at from a different angle, namely that Timothy got the use of the combo for all of this time, something he would not have had otherwise. I agree that the doll is small and annoying, but far better than the frog prince (25 donuts), which is the absolute worst NPC in my opinion.

      • It’s hard for me to read the old posts about old events. I don’t have enough understanding of that event without reading up on it…and I don’t really have time or energy to do that. hah.

So, no I didn’t read about it. Cool to learn that that’s where the evil Krusty doll came from. I guess 90 isn’t too bad for a combo building/NPC. But, yes, worse for just an NPC. But look at current EA. They would so charge that.

    • I did get use of it. But really that’s just a few thousand bucks over the course of a year. Would anyone have bought the combo for 90 if they knew they’d get the building for free eventually? Eh. Doubtful. I mean I love that little evil Krusty doll but 90 donuts for it is insane.

I think the Frog Prince is kind of hilarious. At least he does something somewhat amusing and 25 donuts for any item in this game is cheap.

I still say the Funzos at 50, 60 & 70 donuts are the worst NPC. I am always stunned when I see all 3 in a town. 180 donuts for that???

      • Yes, I do believe many folks would have bought it, because you *don’t* know whether it might be free at some undefined point in the future. It’s a risk you take every time you buy a premium item…it could be part of discounted Gil’s Deal or free down the road. You pays your money and you takes your chances!

    • It’s happened before and I’m sure it will happen again…think of it as an “early access” pass. Also, remember that that’s balanced out by items that you may have gotten for free but now cost donuts to buy for folks who started later than you did.
