Happy 2D Tuesday Everyone!
“Oh, hello, American investor. I see you are interested in distributing Mr. Sparkle in you home prefecture. You have chosen wisely. But please — don’t believe me. Observe this commercial.”
A few weeks back while I was tapping away in my TSTO, I noticed Blinky in the water (forget it is there sometimes). Seeing this silly little fish also reminded me of another silly little fish in the Simpson TV Series that still cracks me up to this day. Mr. Sparkle. Yes, I know, he is not quite just a fish. Looks more like Homer, which is why the episode made me giggle. Poor Homer went on a quest to figure out why his image was being used without his permission. “Ah, yes. This is a product called, “Mr. Sparkle.”Very popular dish detergent. Hey, he looks like you. Ah! Ah – ha! Ah! Ah! He identifies himself as a magnet for foodstuffs. He boasts that he will banish dirt to the land of wind and ghosts. Yes, you have very lucky dishes, Mr. Simpson. This soap is from the sacred forests of Hokkaido, renowned for its countless soap factories”
The episode itself wasn’t even really about Mr. Sparkle. It was focused more on Marge (“In Marge We Trust”), but much like my beloved Itchy & Scratchy, it was a side story that stands out more memorable to me then the Marge content. Reminiscing of the sillyness of the episode, I decided I wanted Mr. Sparkle in my town. So I set out on a task to make a 2D design of him. A task that turned out to not be as simple as I originally thought. “You have many question, Mr. Sparkle. I send you premium — answer question, hundred percent!”
I used the “soap box look” as inspiration for the design as I wanted more than just the face. I started out this design similar to the others. Eyes to set the design in place, nose, mouth, face, etc. It was when I tried the hair I ran into a very frustrating time. For the life of me I just could not get it to look right (not in my eyes anyway). I tweaked and moved and fidgeted with the hair on top of his head and by his ear for what seemed like an eternity. I had to finally just stop for a minute and walk away. I tapped my town, went to Krustyland, and visited neighbors. Sometimes this is just what is needed to refresh the mind and come back to look at your work with a new approach. I came to the conclusion the the hair on top would just have to make do as is. As for the “M” above his ear, I chose to just not connect the lines. They wouldn’t line up otherwise. “Out of my way, all of you. This is no place for loafers! Join me or die! Can you do any less?”
Now that I FINALLY got the general face done. I moved on to his teeth. The propane tanks just didn’t look as “cheesey” as I wanted the smile to look. So I chose to go with the white fences instead.
Next came the lettering. It wasn’t too difficult as the letters/symbols are pretty uniform. It was just a matter of placing them in the similar locations as the soap box had. “I’m disrespectful to dirt. Can you see that I am serious?”
Now for the sunburst effect. To achieve that, I just started at one side of his head and placed garbage bins randomly outward in a line pattern resembling the burst. I continued to place just a few here and there (mainly because I didn’t have many or any $$$ to buy more if needed at the time). Once I went around, I circled the face again and again, adding more to each section as I did until it looked fuller.
It looked pretty cool, but a little out of sorts. I decided to also add a border to give it more uniformity. Then I filled in any open spots leading up to the borders with the remaining garbage cans.
Turned out pretty close to the original I thought.
Just for fun, I also tried filling in the “word bubble” next to his mouth to make it stand out more. I liked both ways.
So there he is. Homer/Mr. Sparkle/Fish Bulb in all his sillyness…and just in case you forgot why it looked like Homer…“Mr. Sparkle. A joint venture of Matsumura Fishworks and Tamaribuchi Heavy Manufacturing Concern”
I am off again to make more random designs in my town so I can come back and harass you with…I mean rub them in your face…errr…so I can come back and let you see what goes into me making these designs along with some behind the scenes pics. 🙂 I hope you are enjoying them. If not, TOO BAD…I mean, please let me know what I can do to improve your enjoyment of them. 😛
